hello everyone it's Hannah here from
0:02
virtually fluent today we are going to
0:05
learn a really important skill in
0:07
English which is telling the time there
0:09
are two different ways to tell the time
0:12
one is relatively easy the other a
0:14
little bit more difficult sadly you need
0:17
to know both of them because native
0:19
speakers use both of these forms of
0:21
telling the time so let's get started
0:24
with those methods for telling the time
0:26
in English
0:32
[Music]
0:35
so we're going to start off with a nice
0:38
simple time like this and we basically
0:41
read all of the numbers individually so
0:44
we start off by saying the whole number
0:47
that is before the decimal point in this
0:50
case four then we say the entire number
0:54
after the decimal point which in this
0:57
case is 20 and then at the end we say
1:00
either a a. if it's in the morning or
1:05
p.m. p.m. if it's in the afternoon
1:09
evening so this particular time would be
1:12
4:20 a.m. what about this time have a
1:16
go this is going to be
1:20
10:35 p.m. now if there are no numbers
1:24
after the decimal point if it's simply a
1:27
zero we don't say anything so in this
1:30
this case it would be 11: a.m. with no
1:34
extra minutes in there now this is the
1:37
sort of digital way of saying numbers in
1:40
English and it's a little bit easier but
1:42
sadly there's the old-fashioned way of
1:45
telling the time in English and we also
1:47
need to know that so when I explain this
1:51
method of telling the time I'm going to
1:53
use the words minute hand which is the
1:56
long hand on the clock and the hour hand
2:00
which is the short hand on the clock now
2:03
we have to imagine that the clock is
2:05
separated into two parts we have one
2:08
method for numbers between 12 and six
2:12
and we have one method between the other
2:14
numbers six and 12 so the right hand
2:17
side of the clock and the left hand side
2:20
of the clock so when the minute hand the
2:24
long hand is between the 12 and the six
2:28
which is on this side of the clock then
2:31
we use this particular method now we
2:34
want to imagine that the number 12 is
2:36
actually a zero for this part of telling
2:40
the time and now we are going to count
2:43
the number of minutes that are from the
2:46
zero to the minute hand which is the big
2:49
hand you can see it here on the number
2:52
one now when we count all of these you
2:55
can see the green markers here we have
2:58
five five minutes so that is the first
3:01
part of our time five now if the minute
3:05
hand is on the right side of the clock
3:09
so between that 12 or zero and the
3:11
number six we say past five P now
3:16
finally we're going to focus on the our
3:18
hand which is the little hand and we
3:20
want to say the whole number that is
3:24
immediately before this little hand in
3:28
this case it's three
3:30
three is the number before that hour
3:33
hand so this time is going to be 5 three
3:38
so to tell the time on this side the
3:40
right side of the clock we have four
3:43
Little Steps step one is convert the
3:46
number 12 to zero imagine it's the
3:48
number zero step two is to count the
3:52
number of minutes to the minute hand
3:55
step three is to say the word p and step
3:58
four is to say the whole number before
4:02
the hour hand now to save you counting
4:05
all of the individual minutes each whole
4:08
number actually represents five minutes
4:10
so the number one is five past number
4:13
two is 10 past number three is a little
4:15
bit different we don't say 15 past we
4:18
say quarter past number four is 20 past
4:22
number five is 25 past and number six is
4:26
also irregular not 30 past but half past
4:30
so this saves you counting all the
4:32
minutes let's take a look at some
4:35
examples what is this time this one is
4:38
going to be quter 6 what about this time
4:45
this is halfast 9 and this time this is
4:52
25 6 now we have a different method when
4:57
the minute hand is on the left side of
5:00
the clock so past the number six all the
5:03
way to the number 12 just like this
5:07
example here now we're going to start
5:09
the same way we're going to imagine our
5:11
number 12 is actually a zero and we are
5:14
also going to count every single minute
5:18
but we're going backwards this time not
5:21
to the right we're going to the left
5:24
instead you can see all the green
5:26
markers here showing the minutes and
5:28
this is 10 10 minutes this is the first
5:32
part of our time 10 now on this side of
5:35
the clock we say two 10 two and our
5:39
final part focuses on the hour hand but
5:43
we say the whole number after the hour
5:47
hand in this case 8 so the time on this
5:51
clock is 10
5:53
to8 so again we have a four-step process
5:57
we convert number 12 to zero
6:00
then step two is to count the number of
6:03
minutes backwards from zero part three
6:07
is to say the word to and part four is
6:10
to say the whole number that is after
6:13
the ourand again to save you counting
6:17
all the minutes each number represents
6:19
five minutes so the number 11 is 52
6:22
number 10 is T to number nine is also an
6:27
exception this is quarter to
6:30
the number eight is 22 and the number
6:33
seven is
6:34
252 let's take a look at a few more
6:37
examples what is this time this is
6:41
quarter to six what about this time this
6:46
is
6:48
527 now the only time we haven't had a
6:51
look at is when the minute hand is on
6:54
the number 12 this one is nice and easy
6:57
and it's a totally different method
7:00
first we say the number that is exactly
7:04
on the hour hand in this case one and
7:07
then we insert the word o00 1:00 what
7:12
about this time this is
7:16
10:00 and that's how we tell the time in
7:19
English there are a few mistakes a few
7:21
traps that students fall into mostly
7:25
mixing up those two methods of time I
7:28
hear 1:00 a.m. a.m. no we have 1 a.m. or
7:33
1:00 the two different methods please
7:36
don't mix them up if you want to learn
7:39
even more about telling the time
7:41
