0:04
Star Wars has been at the cutting edge
0:06
of special effects. Puppets,
0:08
prosthetics, animatronics, CGI, and now
0:12
thankfully animatronics again.
0:14
All the facial expressions go, all the
0:16
limbs moving. It It's almost like a
0:19
little symphony, you know? It all comes
0:20
together in a very magical moment.
0:24
To create the Star Wars world, we have
0:26
to create monsters that inhabit these
0:28
strange alien worlds.
0:31
Gustaf's been making monsters for three
0:33
decades, and he's taking a look back at
0:35
his creations.
0:37
I made many creatures. Rodis, six eyes,
0:41
lost, Admiral Abar, the head of Maz.
0:45
Take us back to the beginning. Where did
0:47
it all start? I remember vividly my dad
0:50
taking me to see Return of the Jedi in
0:53
Toshinsky Cinema in Amsterdam when I was
0:55
6 years old. That film sort of lit a
0:58
spark in me. First of all, I was just in
1:00
awe, overwhelmed, and it made me
1:03
extremely curious how they crafted these
1:07
films, how they can physically make
1:08
something that realistic. I just took it
1:12
all in and uh I think that sort of, you
1:14
know, slowly prepared me for my future
1:16
career. I would read up on books,
1:18
magazines. I started experimenting with
1:21
rubber heads, hobby clay, plaster, wood,
1:25
anything, and put them in my room as
1:28
ornaments. You know, I just kept
1:29
churning them out, trying to perfect my
1:31
style.
1:32
So, how does it work?
1:34
It's a lengthy process. From script, it
1:37
goes to the design department, and then
1:39
that mold lands on my desk. I insert
1:44
clay for the for to create the skin.
1:46
Within that, I build my animatronics.
1:50
Every hair has to be perfect. The
1:51
movement has to be near perfect. You can
1:54
only get do so much with a rubber skin.
1:56
That sounds like a lot.
1:58
When I take a creature on set, my
2:00
anxiety levels are through the roof just
2:02
because I know what potentially could go
2:04
wrong and how much is riding on it. So,
2:07
I'm just hoping it's good.
2:09
And it goes beyond Star Wars.
2:11
hitchhikers. I did jelts. Charlie and
2:13
the chocolate factory. I did the
2:15
squirrels that listen to nuts. And they
2:17
asked me to build a swimming pooler. I
2:20
remember not being able to sleep cuz I
2:21
was so nervous cuz mechanics,
2:23
electronics, and water don't mix.
2:25
Did it work out? Okay.
2:27
The moment comes that we're shooting it.
2:29
Tim Burn says action. The kids run in,
2:31
run to the tank, and they say, "Yep,
2:33
release the looper. Switch it on. Swim
2:36
through frame." He says, "Cut. We got
2:38
it." That was one of them moments that I
2:40
felt like I was walk on an air.
2:42
Gustaf's done his fair share of creepy
2:44
horrors, too.
2:45
There was this small Finnish film I did
2:47
and the creature we built that was very
2:49
prominent in the film. It was like
2:51
almost like a throwback to the 80s. You
2:53
know, we're on the floor with rods and
2:55
doing everything in our power to bring
2:57
this thing to life. The blings are still
2:59
linked up to a motor. You can hear the
3:01
buzzing noise.
3:03
There was a mechanical jaw and a
3:05
mechanical tongue, which was a nice
3:07
little extra.
3:10
So, after 30 years in the job, what's
3:12
the secret?
3:13
It's all about replicating the organic
3:16
movements that you see in nature. That's
3:18
the art of animatronics. It's breathing
3:20
life into a rubber skin. To see one of
3:23
your creations on a big screen, that's
3:25
what you do it for.
