i can't lose a lover but i cannot lose a

0:04

lover and a friend

0:06

[Music]

0:10

because i am trans i wanted to train my

0:12

speaking voice to be something a little

0:14

bit different because my voice used to

0:16

sound like this i wanted to

0:18

have a voice that i was more comfortable

0:20

with

0:21

i feel like my range of voice is me

0:25

accepting myself at all angles

0:29

[Music]

0:34

[Music]

0:36

my name is nat puff i am a

0:38

singer-songwriter i also go by the stage

0:41

name left at

0:43

this is the range that i talk in and

0:45

occasionally sing in but when i sing i

0:48

also utilize my low range i have this

0:50

song called six feet for example that

0:52

utilizes both ranges the verses are like

0:54

oftentimes i scare my reflection

0:58

and then the chorus is like i know that

1:00

you don't know me but i know just who

1:03

you are

1:05

[Music]

1:08

i'm the only trans woman that i know of

1:10

that uses both ranges in songwriting can

1:14

i hear that back i'm going to be

1:15

harmonizing over it

1:17

and even if it's more commonly

1:19

stereotyped as men having that lower

1:22

range i'm not going to let that bring me

1:24

down because i know who i am

1:27

[Music]

1:28

if i succumb to the stereotype then

1:31

nobody wins

1:33

it took me about two years to

1:36

train my voice to go into both ranges in

1:39

the way that it has because it's not as

1:40

simple as just like talking in your

1:43

lower range and then talking in your

1:46

falsetto range because it sounds like

1:47

this and it sounds very airy and it

1:48

sounds very

1:49

weird you literally have to sort of

1:52

learn how to re-support your voice in

1:54

this range and that took a while

1:56

there's admittedly some parts of me that

1:58

still get a little bit dysphoric about

1:59

my voice like damn i had to go through

2:01

all this training and most other women

2:03

don't have to do that but i just

2:05

accepted and moved on and i feel like my

2:07

music is better for that

2:09

[Applause]

2:14

[Music]

2:21

i've had people come up to me saying

2:24

you've made me feel more comfortable

2:25

with my lower range even though you talk

2:27

in your higher range

2:30

people feel represented which makes me

2:33

feel happy that people can find comfort

2:35

in their own voice because having such a

2:37

strange relationship with my own voice

2:39

being that for somebody else is very

2:41

very special to me

2:47

[Music]

2:55

[Applause]

2:56

i feel like as an artist and as a person

3:00

and as a trans person as every part of

3:03

me is just embracing myself

3:05
