there was a big bang and on the screen

0:02

you get the burnout but they kept

0:04

bringing me glasses of wine and after

0:06

the third real change in the fourth

0:08

glass things went wrong you're taking it

0:10

off already yeah man we we walked

0:15

in in the heart of Hackney in London

0:17

lies cine reel the only film club in the

0:19

UK to exclusively play films in 60 mm

0:22

format and it's co-run by this guy ask

0:25

your bloody

0:27

questions my name is umid

0:30

Mesut Hassan that's the full name I have

0:33

the best job in the world thanks to my

0:35

granddad he gave me such a wonderful

0:37

gift my granddad used to have a little

0:39

Cinema in a little town in Cyprus maybe

0:42

about 3,000 4,000 population and I would

0:45

have been eight or 9 years old I would

0:48

go inside the booth and he would show me

0:51

something different every week you know

0:53

I have to change the reals have to do

0:55

repairs on broken film have to lace up

0:58

the projectors and I just loved it to

1:00

bits umit has formed an unlikely

1:03

friendship with a film director my name

1:05

is Liam s Pierre I'm a director I always

1:09

love film but had come from I don't know

1:12

like a workingclass family in the north

1:14

of England it was never something that

1:16

was on my radar as a career and then

1:18

when I moved to Hackney probably in

1:20

around 2007 I made friends with a couple

1:23

of guys who were filmmakers and we

1:24

started making films for fun the film

1:27

was always like there in as a passion

1:30

umit also runs a shop that's filled to

1:32

the brim with old movies and projectors

1:35

recently I learned about Photoshop Liam

1:38

had to explain to me what Photoshop is

1:40

so whatever film we're running I'm in

1:42

the poster so these are the Ste bags

1:45

Liam uses this sometimes to examine film

1:48

and sometimes he does do editing on

1:50

there we got a 100y old projector here

1:52

which still works these are 35 mil yeah

1:56

these are fully functioning

2:00

there wasn't much in the way of health

2:02

and safety then so the shutters on the

2:05

outside just don't get your finger in

2:07

there these are all featurelength films

2:09

on super eight uh blood Island Plan 9

2:13

Ray Harris and classic 1 Million Years

2:16

BC I mean I mean sometimes customers get

2:18

upset on these and they say how much is

2:20

1 million us BC I said it's not for sale

2:23

but you can hire it for a private

2:25

screening few more projectors one of my

2:28

favorites iy projector

2:30

made in Osaka they're beautiful because

2:33

they are so easy to operate so easy to

2:35

lace up and the most

2:38

important they are kind to film you know

2:41

projectors we can replace films we can't

2:45

so films we have to look after them this

2:47

is the bit that people really love about

2:50

the space we got a little hidden Cinema

2:52

in the back um come through and I'll

2:54

show it to you this seats about 17

2:58

people and the seats are like 90 years

3:01

old this used to be like a storage space

3:04

you couldn't even see the walls or the

3:06

ceiling so my very good friend Liam came

3:09

up with this idea he said why don't we

3:12

build a little Cinema people booked a

3:15

space they choose one of our films they

3:17

can bring their own food we have

3:19

intermission halfway and um yeah

3:22

everybody loves it so how did you guys

3:24

meet I walk past Hackney City farm and

3:27

in a bin there was a super eight

3:29

projector and I remember thinking this

3:31

is a sign from The Cinematic gods and I

3:34

brought the projector in they kindly

3:36

fixed the projector for free but was

3:38

like super Eight's okay 16 mm so much

3:41

better and I've got this wonderful 16 mm

3:44

projector here 450 quid 400 yeah bloody

3:48

bloody bargain sir and then was like

3:51

let's put on a film night together and

3:53

what did you say well flat out I said no

3:57

so then I ended up borrowing a print of

4:00

draws went and did this screen in little

4:03

Gallery but they kept booming me glasses

4:06

of wine and after the third real change

4:08

in a fourth glass things went wrong you

4:11

ended up like Peter cellers the drunk

4:13

projection Earth so then I went back to

4:15

the shop and pleaded and said look I'll

4:18

pay you whatever just come down for once

4:20

and then at the end of the night you

4:22

just said to me what time next month and

4:25

then that's that's it ever since I

4:27

remember it like yesterday there was a

4:29

young lady there there with her parents

4:31

I don't know 15 16 she said thank you

4:34

very much I've never seen a film

4:37

presented like this and that really made

4:39

it for me wow Liam look what I found

4:42

Bonnie and Clyde there can't be many

4:45

screenings of this done nowadays on 16

4:47

mm print so there you go Bonnie and

4:50

Clyde uncut on 16 mil don't be late

4:56

which one of you guys came up with the

4:57

name cine I chose it he didn't like it

5:01

no I like it you just didn't like the

5:03

way I spelled it real as in rou e l

5:06

would have been better but re a l works

5:10

as well C real it's catchy I didn't like

5:14

it at first but I do nowadays good and

5:17

then it was a lot of years of kind of

5:20

lugging projectors around even first

5:22

screeners I remember going into my

5:24

flatten I'm to bring chairs and stuff

5:26

like that no chairs don't to like every

5:29

screening would have carry the screen

5:31

hang a screen hang a screen wield a

5:33

projectors and sometimes you know we've

5:36

been doing it for a few years and you

5:37

might not get a great turnout it could

5:39

have been like four or five people and

5:40

it's like what are we doing yeah we've

5:42

had some of those yeah and then it just

5:43

got bigger and bigger and then when we

5:45

went to the castle it then is just oh

5:48

well off Castle is beautiful the castle

5:51

they're referring to is the Hackney

5:52

Castle Cinema an independent and

5:54

Community funded Cinema that's been

5:56

around since

5:57

1913 we only show film on film so 160

6:01

mil or Super Eight you're taking it off

6:03

already yeah man we we walked

6:07

in cinemas used to introduce movies and

6:10

take questions from the audience and

6:12

this is exactly what um and Liam are

6:14

trying to bring back it's a presentation

6:17

it's Showmanship which doesn't happen

6:19

much nowadays sadly you know they just

6:21

want to get you in and get you out they

6:24

want to do four shows a day five shows a

6:26

day because a little Q&A a little intro

6:29

in intermission this all takes up time

6:31

but this is what it used to be this is

6:34

how film was presented we have a raffle

6:36

so your seat number is your raffle

6:38

ticket you win a bag so you go to shop

6:41

with a bag got some tote bags some mugs

6:44

mugs and then two free tickets to next

6:46

month screening but a standard screening

6:48

doesn't always go to plan we showed

6:51

Night Living Dead and halfway through it

6:54

there was a big bang and on the screen

6:56

you get the burnout so we have to change

6:58

projectors and then at the end of the

7:01

night we said like oh sorry about cuz it

7:03

took about 15 20 minutes sorry about

7:05

that and some woman stood up and said uh

7:09

I've been waiting my whole life to see a

7:11

burnout and I saw a burnout so thank

7:14

you this unlikely friendship has created

7:17

an amazing film club that will hopefully

7:19

continue for many years to come we're a

7:21

bit of an odd couple together I probably

7:24

speak to him probably the most out of

7:25

anyone it took him a while to warm up

7:28

when I first suggested maybe doing a

7:29

film night together that relationship

7:32

over time really developed I hope you

7:35

enjoy Chinatown an original film thank

7:41

you I'm glad really that he decided to

7:44

walk in over the months and years we

7:46

became good friends is just a wonderful

7:49

wonderful wonderful guy I always joke

7:52

and I say he's not heavy he's my brother

7:57

Liam thank you very my man thank you

8:00

very much for walking into my life
