I would imagine we're pushing over well

0:03

over, 1500 signs our electricity bill at

0:08

the moment is roughly around about

0:10

£1,000 each a month I'm just a holder

0:14

and not a collector

0:16

holding is an understatement bul signs

0:20

Amusement signs metal signs enamel signs

0:22

road signs signs signs signs neon neon

0:27

neon when you're working with neon all

0:29

you need is

0:35

love hidden in London's East End lies

0:38

God's Own junkyard and Aladdin's Cave of

0:41

neon here they produce display and sell

0:44

some of the most famous neon in the

0:47

world it's Run by One family Brothers

0:50

Marcus and Matthew and their mother

0:52

Linda and you might recognize a few from

0:54

your favorite movies Batman we worked on

0:58

that was 13 years old B six times Tomb

1:01

Raider three times Judge Dread the same

1:05

the list goes on and on and on Mission

1:08

Impossible you did didn't you yeah with

1:09

Tom Cruz yeah you know the bit when they

1:12

winched down I was actually above him

1:14

during that 17 years old on set Blade

1:18

Runner we got the dragon over there

1:21

Expendables we just did that not long

1:23

ago Superman 4 with Christopher Reeves

1:26

and our youngest son Max he actually

1:29

play made the baby super baby was he was

1:32

it was super baby Eyes Wide Shut we

1:35

worked with Stanley kick and uh we ended

1:37

up doing the back lot we filled this New

1:40

York streets with fairy lights neon

1:42

lights it was fantastic then on Friday

1:45

night one night we ended up having a

1:46

curry with him cuz we worked late till

1:48

about 12:00 at night doing a lighting

1:51

test on his like rainbow tuxedo sign

1:53

which was beautiful that was like the

1:55

primary part of the start of the film

1:57

they chose me to drive a yellow taxi big

2:00

New York taxi and drop him off outside

2:02

the rainbow tuxedo shop and you just get

2:05

a little glimpse of me driving him down

2:09

the film set and dropping him off you do

2:11

feel proud because it neon is usually

2:15

quite a big part of the the whole set so

2:17

it kind of gives atmosphere it's nice to

2:20

see that the work we're doing with our

2:22

hands and all the Blood Sweat and Tears

2:25

that we put into it goes into so so

2:27

amazing the other thing I think which is

2:30

nice is that it's

2:31

immortalized yeah you see it's there

2:33

forever yeah this establishment's

2:36

legendary Legacy can be credited to one

2:38

man the late Christopher bracie and his

2:41

family continue his work to this day

2:44

Chris was some inspirational to many of

2:46

people wasn't just me the locals people

2:49

in London I was amazed on his his

2:53

vision he is like the Godfather of neon

2:56

they say the neon man yeah within the

2:58

industry they call him industry yeah he

3:00

wanted to take neon to a higher purpose

3:04

he was working with his father dick

3:06

bracie who who started the business in

3:09

1952 but he saw further than just the

3:13

graphics on a sign he wanted to make

3:16

them Arty when he was younger he went to

3:19

see an exhibition by Dan flaven and also

3:23

was inspired by Bruce nman who was a 60s

3:27

neon artist that took him down a path

3:30

that think that signs were not just for

3:32

commercial use he could use neon as an

3:35

art medium as well everything was about

3:38

duel meanings it never just meant what

3:40

you read or what you thought it was it

3:42

was proper art you'd stand you could

3:44

look at it for hours and you still might

3:46

not actually work out what he's trying

3:48

to say it was kind of Chris's dream that

3:52

um one day we would be able to put it

3:55

all out on display and show it to the

3:58

public and he was quite specific about

4:01

it that it was for free Chris's dream

4:03

became a reality but the place needed a

4:06

name as iconic as his Neon Chris was

4:09

sitting at the desk one evening he

4:11

shouts out Euphoria you know um I've um

4:16

I've got a name and he said it was God's

4:18

Own junkyard he was looking at an

4:20

article by an American architect called

4:24

Peter Blake and he was actually saying

4:28

that uh all the Big Sky signs Motel

4:31

signs gas station signs mainly through

4:34

Route 66 were making God's own country

4:38

into God's Own

4:40

junkyard and Chris just said great

4:42

that's it fantastic that's us Chris's

4:46

work can still be seen around the

4:48

Streets of London but over the years the

4:50

demand for neon has fallen as shop

4:52

fronts and street corners off for new

4:54

attack like

4:56

LED I think that neon signs uh

5:00

to some extent will become rare there's

5:02

only one neon powder company left in the

5:05

world making the powders for the glass

5:07

so if they don't make the powder you

5:09

can't get these different colors what

5:11

everyone's saying is that neon signs are

5:14

going to be worth more money than

5:16

gold in about 10 years we could be

5:20

sitting on a gold mine making these

5:22

one-off signs isn't a walk in the park

5:25

each one takes hours of love and craft

5:28

it's a fragile product that you've got

5:31

to be careful with it's not something

5:33

that you can throw around whoever you've

5:36

got working with you on it has to be

5:38

very careful with it has to learn how to

5:40

handle neon the colors and the matching

5:43

of colors and the the the way colors can

5:46

mean something in what you're portraying

5:49

it's really something that you you think

5:51

about a lot don't you as as things are

5:53

being put together I always say that

5:55

neon is our favorite color you gradually

5:58

work your way up from from little

5:59

drawings and sketches up into s full

6:02

scale drawings once you've drawn that up

6:05

and you're happy with it you um take it

6:07

into the glass up we Bend these pure

6:09

sodium straight canes of glass which are

6:12

made from Sand so we basically bend over

6:16

th000 Dee burners these bits of glass we

6:18

actually Inlet the gases in the Arun or

6:21

the Neon gas which we're breathing in

6:23

now it's a pure gas and then we charge

6:25

it with voltage and then obviously we're

6:28

there you've got that set

6:30

when you charge that sign up you go wow

6:32

it's alive cuz sometimes it can fail it

6:35

can have a crack in it you know you can

6:37

overheat the glass it sort of dies on

6:39

you and you got to start a game but it's

6:41

yeah you get a Bast you do get a charge

6:45

yourself it's no surprise that God's Own

6:47

junkyard has a long list of famous fans

6:50

from around the world Jamie I love Lady

6:53

Gaga Jude La there's a lot of alist

6:56

stars that come in and we create in

6:59

designed for them maxel Rose eraser Finn

7:03

Lizzy they've all had pieces made up and

7:05

specially made for themselves as well as

7:08

well as hiring the place for their promo

7:10

or video shoots too we also did the

7:13

party for and John we filled the garden

7:15

didn't we with neon sign as they walked

7:17

in yeah it looked amazing and then hid

7:19

behind the bushes yeah yeah yeah we had

7:21

hide behind the bushes didn't we yeah

7:23

yeah we weren't high profile yeah

7:26

no when I look at what some of these

7:29

sign really look like and what the

7:30

impact and the presence of them being

7:33

there on buildings it's fantastic God's

7:36

Own junkyard is to some extent a labor

7:40

of love yeah the generic scale of it

7:44

just sort of like blows people away it's

7:46

just nice to see parts of still parts of

7:49

London that you know traditionally got

7:51

on signs up and working and they look

7:54

[Music]

7:58

fantastic
