0:01
a genre born in the UK's Underground
0:04
Music Scene has taken the World by
0:06
storm this is the story of donk and why
0:10
this man turned himself into a lobster
0:14
DJ my name's Lobster B and I'm best
0:17
known for being a DJ and donk producer
0:20
before we get into it why are you
0:22
dressed like a lobster during lockdown I
0:25
did a lot of DJ streams online and I
0:28
thought if I was just a guy sat in my
0:31
bedroom then it would be a bit boring I
0:33
had a baby a few years ago and my friend
0:37
bought him this which is a lobster
0:40
costume and he absolutely didn't want to
0:43
get into it and I thought oh what if I
0:45
try this on for my streams I got
0:47
bookings after Co and I turned up to
0:50
them without my costume and the
0:52
promoters always said where's your
0:53
costume you know you're not Lobster be
0:55
without it so I guess I have no choice
0:58
but it's stuck and I'm happy with it
1:00
so tell us what exactly is donk donk
1:04
music is quite hard fast bouncy dance
1:08
music it's also known for
1:11
remixing uh pop music tracks the
1:14
characteristics of donk are things like
1:16
uh sped up Chipmunk style sort of vocals
1:20
it has an offbeat donk sound which is
1:24
best described as like a a flip hop flop
1:28
hitting a drain pipe like a th sort of
1:30
noise characteristically 150 bpm which
1:33
is quite fast it's probably faster than
1:36
say house or trance or technique what
1:39
makes donk music different from other
1:42
dance music genres is that there's
1:45
definitely a sense of humor it's kind of
1:47
tongue and cheek there's no pressure to
1:49
go to these events and dress all the
1:51
same like some techno parties people can
1:54
be uninhibited and be themselves and
1:57
just have a good time it's just fun
2:00
where did this genre of dance music come
2:02
from donk music came from the
2:05
Netherlands the first track was by Club
2:07
heads in the early
2:09
[Music]
2:11
2000s it was popularized in the UK by
2:14
the blackout crew who made put a donk on
2:17
it in
2:21
2009 that became huge that got into the
2:24
UK charts and everyone knew donk from
2:26
that track donk became popular up north
2:29
in Wigan that area where the blackout
2:31
crew are from there's a really legendary
2:33
venue up there called Wigan Pier in the
2:36
early to mid 2000s Wigan Pier was
2:39
absolutely like the place to go for Don
2:41
music and everyone sort of flocked there
2:44
as like the Donk
2:46
Maca do you remember the first time you
2:48
heard donk
2:49
music the first time I heard donk was a
2:52
long time ago when I was in my teenage
2:56
years that was even before blackout crew
2:58
did put a don on it there was a DJ
3:00
called Alex K who's a popular Australian
3:03
DJ who was doing donk mashups of dance
3:10
tracks his tracks were the most popular
3:12
ones on wig and Pier when the Donk scene
3:15
first originated I can remember the
3:17
first donk event that I went to which
3:19
was entrance versus Ultra beat who are
3:23
still both massive acts they played a
3:25
whole set of donk and it was just pure
3:28
Euphoria it was is like totally
3:30
uplifting and you just leave on such a
3:33
good vibe and I think that's really what
3:35
made me think yeah I need to get into
3:38
this why do you think donk has had a
3:40
rise in popularity in recent years when
3:43
I first started going to donk or bounce
3:46
events in the southwest they were very
3:48
working class like the ones up North and
3:50
then the Donk scene started coming about
3:53
in London and it's become very trendy
3:55
everyone's super fashionable but there
3:57
has been a good outcome with that
3:59
because London scene is incredibly
4:01
inclusive donk Knight's sort of largely
4:04
queer or queer inclusive event and it's
4:07
you know dress however you want and
4:10
there's no kind of judgment there which
4:12
is great in terms of costumes I've seen
4:14
everything Goths Japanese influence like
4:17
Lita style cyber Goths just straight up
4:21
ravers all sorts anything goes nostalgia
4:25
in the Donk scene I think is incredibly
4:27
important I grew up in the early 2000s I
4:30
was listening to those Tunes so you've
4:32
got things like wenga boys crazy frog
4:34
that kind of music which is from that
4:38
era people love hearing those Chun even
4:41
if they were babies or maybe not even
4:44
born when those tracks came out which is
4:46
great for me something that has really
4:48
helped the Donk scene is social media
4:51
donk is like a really good genre for
4:53
things like Tik Tok videos filmed at
4:55
Raves cuz they're just fast and fun they
4:58
have heavy drops
5:00
I found my tracks being used for
5:02
incredibly Niche things on Tik Tok such
5:05
as German combin Harvester drivers using
5:10
a particular track of mine a Madonna
5:12
remix almost every day I have a new
5:14
video on Tik Tok which is someone
5:16
driving a combine harvester to my track
5:19
which is
5:20
hilarious so Lobster B how did you get
5:23
into becoming a donk DJ I've been making
5:26
donk for over 20 years I kind of made it
5:29
just like a play it to my friends I
5:31
never imagined that it would take off so
5:34
I never bothered releasing it I thought
5:36
it was too Niche and then when I
5:37
realized that there was a market for it
5:39
I started releasing my tracks about five
5:41
or six years ago and yeah it's all
5:43
kicked off since then a lot of DJs want
5:46
to take the crowd on a journey or
5:49
respond to the crowd's Vibes or reaction
5:52
I kind of do the opposite because a donk
5:54
event people just want to hear like hard
5:57
dance donk bangers and so I just smash
6:00
them out all night one of the nicest
6:03
things for me is when people message me
6:06
to say that they've come alone to one of
6:08
my gigs it's nice to think that they
6:10
feel that they can do that and it's an
6:13
inclusive enough event for them to feel
6:16
safe and meet other people who are into
6:18
that sort of Music I've got some
6:21
returning Lobster V fans who will fly
6:25
from other countries to see me which is
6:28
super nice and people people in the
6:29
crowd who dresses lobsters and that's
6:32
always very heartwarming to see is this
6:35
your first DK now
6:37
or other night before oh absolutely our
6:41
first donk Rodeo are you here for L
6:43
three of
6:46
course um have you been seen L before I
6:49
have tce I've seen him three times oh
6:53
really tonight energetic fun we like any
6:58
music
6:59
it sounds a bit like obnoxious yeah it's
7:02
just silly that sounds silly
7:05
funy and
7:08
fun
7:10
seriously there's no other music like it
7:13
like when you go on Spotify there's
7:15
nothing when you going to sow the real
7:17
juice is that it's like the nectar of
7:19
the
7:21
peach period like I love
7:25
that the future of donk music will be it
7:28
getting more into chart and pop music
7:33
some artists in my scene have made
7:36
bootleg tracks and then instead of
7:39
getting sued they get approached by
7:42
Universal or Sony music who say hey how
7:46
about we make this track official and
7:48
that is happening more and more you
7:50
start to see donk all over Europe now
7:52
even Berlin has its own donk scene I
7:55
never thought I'd see the day especially
7:57
when I started playing events in Berlin
8:00
I feel like the crowd didn't know how to
8:02
react but now they seem to be super into
8:05
it which is amazing I'm excited to see
8:08
how the scene grows and it's definitely
8:10
on the up
