if you were a kid back in the 90s and

0:03

early 2000s

0:05

then chances are you were probably

0:06

watching the animated series about the

0:08

batman

0:09

behind every great animated hero is a

0:11

great voice actor

0:13

and for me that actor is kevin conroy

0:19

how was that that was good kevin keep

0:21

going okay

0:24

i am vengeance i am the knight

0:27

i am batman

0:30

is that okay

0:33

i'm kevin conroy uh i've been playing

0:36

the voice

0:37

of batman since 1991

0:40

for 29 years jokers opened every cell in

0:43

arkham

0:44

it started with batman the animated

0:46

series

0:47

and then the adventures of batman and

0:49

robin and then came the justice league

0:52

batman beyond and in the interim there

0:55

was

0:55

mask of the phantasm sub-zero killing

0:58

joke

0:59

i would like to claim that i have been

1:02

the only voice of batman for any

1:04

animated show

1:05

but i've been doing it the longest of

1:07

anybody and i've been the one that's

1:09

sort of referred to as the animated

1:11

voice come into the light

1:14

i was a new york theater actor i studied

1:16

at juilliard

1:18

and the people i worked with were robin

1:20

williams

1:21

kelsey grammer harriet harris francis

1:24

conroy

1:25

i did broadway off-broadway a lot of

1:28

classics shakespeare the greeks

1:30

address your love and might to honor

1:34

helen

1:34

and so when my agent told me they were

1:36

doing this new animated batman

1:38

show the only thing i knew about batman

1:40

was the

1:41

adam west show i didn't even know it had

1:42

never been an animated show i was that

1:44

naive to it

1:45

and so when i was first auditioning for

1:47

the role the director described it as

1:48

this very dark

1:49

noir character i went to exactly what i

1:53

know

1:53

which is the theater and so i used my

1:55

imagination to fill that out

1:57

and for me with my voice try to create

2:01

a dark gritty filthy

2:05

new york street so once i had

2:08

came up with this voice in the recording

2:10

studio everything got really still

2:12

in there and i thought oh i just screwed

2:16

up i have so

2:17

blown this and then the casting director

2:20

came running inside she said you nailed

2:22

it you you nailed it

2:24

[Music]

2:26

joker where did he go my favorite

2:29

episodes

2:30

of any of the shows are the ones that

2:32

deal with the

2:33

complexity of the man of bruce wayne

2:36

perchance to dream is a wonderful

2:39

episode where he's drugged

2:40

and he goes back into his childhood and

2:42

he deals with his father

2:44

so i was the voice of batman and bruce

2:46

wayne and then i was drugged batman

2:49

and then i was adolescent to bruce wayne

2:51

and i was thomas wayne my father

2:53

so in the one episode i did five voices

2:56

so any episode that dealt with

2:57

that psychology that makes up batman

3:01

i love you know what's going on this is

3:04

a dream

3:06

tell me where it is voicing batman

3:10

for 29 years has been an extraordinary

3:12

experience

3:13

because it evolved from being a

3:16

an acting job to being kind of the

3:19

embodiment

3:20

of a cultural touchdown for a lot of

3:23

people

3:24

people come up to me all the time and

3:25

just want to grab me and hug me

3:27

because they know me i've shared my

3:30

deepest emotional life with them

3:32

through my performance and through my

3:33

voice so the advice i would give to the

3:36

next person who comes along to voice

3:38

batman

3:39

um is don't because i'm still here no

3:42

i'm just kidding i'm just kidding

3:43

[Laughter]

3:45

joker where did he go

3:48
