Harry Houdini pen andella David

0:04

Copperfield what do all these people

0:06

have in common you might not have

0:08

thought about it but magicians all seem

0:10

to be men and the numbers back it up

0:14

only around 5% of magicians are women

0:17

and it's even more pronounced among the

0:19

industry's biggest names so where are

0:23

all the female magicians we found one

0:26

maybe she can tell us

0:28

more people always ask asked me why

0:31

aren't there more women in Magic well

0:33

there's always been women in Magic

0:35

always for over a hundred years women

0:37

were topping the bills all over the

0:39

country but much like many things of

0:41

course women were written out of History

0:43

which is why you might know who Houdini

0:45

is but you perhaps don't know who Talmer

0:47

is or Ionia or some of these really

0:50

extraordinary women who were performing

0:52

amazing amazing shows uh all those years

0:54

ago Laura London is a world leading

0:56

magician and slight of hand artist who's

0:59

performed for the likes of King Charles

1:01

and Darren Brown she was also the first

1:03

female chair of the magic circle one of

1:06

the oldest and most prestigious magic

1:09

Societies in the world founded in 1905

1:12

it was only in 1991 when the magic

1:14

circle began accepting women though

1:17

little did they know a female magician

1:19

had already infiltrated their

1:22

[Music]

1:26

ranks Our Story begins with Sophie Lloyd

1:30

an actress who in 1990 joined forces

1:33

with a magician called Jenny win Stanley

1:35

to embark on an elaborate mission to

1:38

make an important point and they spent

1:41

about 18 months or so coming up with

1:43

this deception where during that time

1:46

would not only learn a magic act but she

1:48

would learn to look like a man act like

1:51

a man with the sole intention to prove

1:54

that women were just as good as the men

1:58

with the disguise mastered Sophie became

2:01

Raymond she now he was accepted to the

2:05

magic circle proving good enough to join

2:07

the secret society a year later in 1991

2:11

the magic circle finally decided to

2:14

start accepting female members

2:16

emboldened by the progress Raymond

2:19

revealed his true identity only to find

2:22

that the traditional institution was not

2:24

impressed and the magic circle expelled

2:27

Sophie Lloyd and just like that she

2:29

disappeared her story became the stuff

2:32

of Legend and widespread media

2:34

speculation the mystery remains unsolved

2:37

though the magic circle are trying to

2:39

track her down we all need to say thank

2:41

you to This Woman This extraordinary

2:43

woman for proving her point so

2:46

incredibly well around the same time

2:49

Laura was a little girl and she was

2:51

struggling at

2:53

school I was six I was diagnosed with

2:56

ADHD my mom had no idea what to do with

2:58

me you know I was sent to a special

3:00

Clinic where the doctor told my mom

3:02

you're never going to do well in school

3:03

you're certainly not going to hold down

3:05

a proper job and so they encouraged her

3:09

to find something creative for me after

3:12

seeing a magician at a birthday party at

3:14

the age of six Laura found that creative

3:17

release all of the kids were just having

3:19

the best time ever and I thought what a

3:21

wonderful thing to do you know to be

3:22

able to put smiles and all these faces

3:25

yeah that's that's that was me so when

3:27

my mom picked me up I was like that's it

3:29

that's what I have to do I have to do

3:31

this women in Magic have historically

3:33

been confined to certain roles the

3:36

assistant is a classic example but

3:38

there's also a long history of women

3:40

being associated with sorcery and

3:42

witches but young Laura growing up as

3:45

the daughter of a nightclub owner was

3:47

unaware of such stereotypes I had no

3:49

idea that there was an issue with women

3:51

in Magic at all until much later because

3:54

in my mom's nightclub she booked faay

3:56

Presto another woman so unlike many

3:58

parents who might have thought it was a

3:59

silly thing uh she was very encouraging

4:02

her mother's unusual career and

4:04

encouragement of Laura suspended the

4:06

illusion that this was an uneven playing

4:08

field every time her birthday or

4:10

Christmas rolled around she would

4:12

receive a little bit of money and would

4:14

go straight to the magic

4:16

shop one of Laura's favorites was

4:19

International magic once one of the many

4:22

small magic shops in London it is now

4:25

the only independent magic shop left in

4:27

the city this is a family business with

4:31

the magic community at its core owned by

4:33

Martin McMillan over the 50 years that

4:36

he's been running the shop a lot has

4:38

changed but faces such as luras have

4:41

remained the same It's a Small World

4:43

Magic so uh our customers they do tend

4:46

to become our friends the regular

4:47

customers are our friends Laura is very

4:50

interested in the history of magic and a

4:54

actually is a very good magician very

4:55

talented

4:57

magician the role magic shops played go

5:00

back in time that that was how people

5:01

got their magic but there's nothing to

5:03

equal in my mind going in and picking

5:05

something up and actually seeing it live

5:07

I'm still of that generation that

5:09

remembers going to a little magic shop

5:11

hidden and there is something about

5:13

being able to go into a place asking the

5:16

person behind the counter like Martin at

5:18

International and say oh what what's new

5:21

what have you got and they take it out

5:22

and they show it to you International

5:24

magic is the last of its kind but Laura

5:27

believes that the industry has to do

5:29

everything in its power to keep physical

5:31

magic shops alive I think that's

5:34

something that the younger generation

5:36

are really going to lose if we lose any

5:38

more magic

5:39

shops the next chapter in Laura's

5:42

Journey takes us to the magic

5:45

circle I was the youngest female to ever

5:47

join because I did my exam on my 18th

5:50

birthday I was that dedicated to to

5:52

Magic founded in 1905 the magic circle

5:56

is an exclusive world-renowned Society

5:58

of magicians based in London membership

6:01

is selective and the group boasts some

6:03

of the biggest names in Magic they're

6:06

dedicated to advancing their art keeping

6:08

its Secret Safe from public disclosure

6:12

for a long time it was a boy club but

6:14

from her first Gara dinner Laura felt at

6:16

home I remember the night so so well

6:19

nobody knew what to make of me I mean

6:21

you have to also understand I was very

6:22

new to the magic circle some of the guys

6:25

the especially the older guys were a bit

6:28

dubious of me was was I going to stick

6:29

around I don't think they realized how

6:31

seriously I took magic at all and this

6:34

brings our story to the present as a

6:37

result of people like Sophie and Laura

6:39

The Tide is slowly beginning to turn

6:41

particularly among younger magicians

6:43

this is no more evident than at the

6:45

magic circles youth Initiative Program

6:48

as of 2024 the proportion of female

6:51

magicians is at 15% the highest it's

6:53

ever been and up from just 5% in

6:56

2016 one of the really one wonderful

7:00

upand coming stars of the of the magic

7:03

circle youth initiative is AR Arabella

7:06

she's just this lovely young magician

7:10

who creates characters but it's so

7:12

unique and so different I've never seen

7:14

anything like it it's such a special

7:17

thing to see this rise in young girls

7:20

doing magic and doing it so well and

7:22

finding their own personalities with it

7:24

and finding their own style with it I

7:27

think the best magicians in the world

7:29

World they have the ability to

7:34

understand magic but also believe in it

7:37

sometimes I watch an illusion and I am

7:39

so blown away because I have no idea how

7:41

it's done and that feeling is so

7:44

important if you want to make people

7:46

feel a certain way you have to

7:48

understand that feeling
