you've got too many people you've got

0:01

you've got capitalism that always

0:03

expects

0:05

gain growth

0:07

and um

0:08

so the whole the whole thing's

0:10

i haven't sworn yet yeah it grabs free

0:13

energy

0:14

from the outside amazing yeah i don't

0:17

police it no

0:18

i don't know if it actually works out

0:19

cheaper electricity is cheaper after 7

0:22

p.m and it's cheapest between 10 p.m and

0:25

5 a.m

0:26

is it affordable to be

0:28

environmentally friendly it's very

0:30

expensive the real question is do you

0:32

really want to damage the environment

0:34

that you live in

0:36

do you want to pollute this place or not

0:38

you don't have to get into agreeing or

0:40

disagreeing about

0:42

climate studies and this and that it's

0:44

like do you want to pour oil in this

0:46

spot we're in now or don't you do you

0:48

want to damage where you live or don't

0:50

you and then there's no argument hello

0:52

welcome to easy english today i want to

0:54

know what the people of brighton are

0:56

doing to help protect the environment

0:58

anything specifically they might be

1:00

doing or any cost efficient life hacks

1:02

they might have up their sleeve before

1:04

we start please don't forget to like and

1:07

subscribe here we go what do you do

1:10

specifically sort of help the

1:11

environment okay well recycling yeah

1:14

yeah we recycle

1:17

as much as we possibly can

1:19

um

1:20

don't drop any litter

1:22

that's that's pretty much um

1:25

i don't eat meat maybe

1:27

a really half a half of the week

1:29

not fully vegetarian or vegan but

1:32

flexitarian yeah like

1:34

trying to

1:36

be conscious about that in a more

1:37

practical sort of day-to-day sense yeah

1:40

and affordable i guess

1:42

um

1:43

would you what do you do

1:45

like i've got blinds and curtains

1:48

right because my windows are crappy

1:50

so it keeps more of the heat

1:52

in uh and i only boil as much water as i

1:56

need for a cup of tea or whatever that's

1:58

a good which saves on water and um

2:01

electricity yeah

2:03

um and something i learned recently is

2:06

that electricity is cheaper after 7 pm

2:09

and it's cheapest between 10 pm and 5 am

2:13

so if i'm putting on the dishwasher or

2:15

i'm putting on a load of washing then

2:16

i'll do it after 10 pm what do you do

2:20

for the environment personally

2:23

what recycling wise and all that is that

2:25

really you do sort of the generic yeah

2:27

like the general sort of going to your

2:29

local

2:31

recycling center or do you have your own

2:32

recycling bin or something we've got all

2:33

our own bins yeah our own recycling bins

2:36

but i also go down to a place called the

2:38

green center brighton which is in the

2:41

open market on the london road and it's

2:44

a sort of

2:45

charity

2:47

organization that

2:49

takes in and recycles

2:51

a lot of things that the council won't

2:53

take

2:54

so they take oh i don't know what's in

2:55

hinds like

2:56

biro pens foil um

3:00

food pouches baby food pouches pet food

3:02

pouches they're just the whole range of

3:04

things they're taking you know

3:06

there's a list of a couple of dozen

3:08

things that they take and um so we we

3:11

sort of keep our stuff in the garage and

3:13

then once a month we hop down there and

3:15

take all our bits and pieces down

3:17

um so that's that's

3:19

i found that quite good um

3:21

because it means there's a lot less

3:22

things going into our actual rubbish bin

3:24

what is it you do

3:26

to help with climate change or the

3:28

environment right i've been

3:30

supporting the green party for a long

3:32

time and trying to do things that are

3:34

environmentally sound so like i don't

3:36

drive i use public transport

3:39

compost

3:40

stuff

3:42

my old house i had an airsoft heat pump

3:46

for all over months because we then

3:48

mowed which was a shame but that was

3:49

brilliant what did you have sorry an air

3:52

source heat pump air source heat pump

3:54

yeah to get rid of gas

3:56

um so that was

3:58

that was quite an undertaking but it was

4:00

brilliant i can highly recommend them

4:01

despite all the bad press that they have

4:03

and then we moved to salt dean and we've

4:06

just two weeks ago got solar panels

4:09

which is

4:10

fascinating but it's a bit scary because

4:13

i keep having alarms going off at the

4:15

minute so they're sorting out something

4:17

that's wrong with them

4:19

because the lives going off we're off

4:20

grid

4:21

for

4:22

most of the day now so that's great yeah

4:26

i'm afraid

4:28

i have a bleak opinion

4:31

or not a bleak outlook which is

4:33

i don't think there is anything i think

4:39

i i believe the terms um what is it um

4:43

gesture politics

4:45

it falls into that like oh i'm i don't

4:47

eat meat anymore all right great

4:49

and uh what about africa what about

4:52

india and what about all these other

4:54

places that have

4:56

huge amounts of resource needs and they

4:58

look at us and go we want to have a

5:00

slice of that yeah

5:02

i just think it's a drop in the ocean

5:03

what i mean it's very defeatist i do

5:05

accept that my point of view

5:07

but

5:08

i mean i like to recycle stuff but i

5:11

mean probably gets burned in in new

5:13

haven in in the in the in the um

5:16

power station there so it's like oh i'm

5:19

i could go on recycling but it's getting

5:21

burnt before we carry on with this

5:22

5:54

over to patreon.com forward slash easy

5:57

english videos now back to the episode

6:00

and how long have you been flexitarian

6:02

uh maybe a year and you do this for

6:04

environmental purposes yeah yeah for

6:06

health environmental you know my friends

6:09

are full-on vegan

6:11

so he's kind of imparting on me a little

6:13

bit so i'm trying to

6:14

do it i can't fully commit to it but

6:16

he's inspired you he's inspired me a bit

6:18

yeah and what about like food waste do

6:20

you have any like clever food waste

6:22

stuff

6:23

unfortunately not i mean i've got a dog

6:25

that helps with most things

6:28

that's a bin right there yeah and i try

6:31

and cook in big batches so that then i

6:33

can like portion it up and put some

6:35

portions in the freezer great um that's

6:38

that's a good one is putting portions in

6:39

the freezer because then if you don't

6:41

want to eat the same thing for a whole

6:43

week

6:44

you don't have to yeah yeah you can cook

6:46

something else but you're not wasting

6:47

the food we try to use environmentally

6:49

friendly products for sort of cleaning

6:51

and stuff like that um i've i got oh

6:54

i don't know a few years ago now i got

6:56

into using a sort of vinegar and lemon

6:58

mixture for doing a lot of cleaning

6:59

around the house yeah i've seen a lot of

7:01

that yeah um

7:02

uh

7:03

we try to buy things that have got less

7:05

plastic packaging yeah those sorts of

7:07

things and the lemonade vinegar thing is

7:09

that like an alternative to bleach is

7:11

that what you'd say um it's a general

7:12

cleaner i mean it's great on glass and

7:15

mirrors and things like that um tiles

7:17

those sort of things but it's also a

7:18

natural disinfectant anti-antibacterial

7:22

um so it's it's good for like cleaning

7:24

your bathroom basins kitchen worktops

7:26

things like that so yeah it's good it

7:28

seems that you do a lot yeah and my

7:30

question is is it affordable to be

7:33

environmentally friendly it's very

7:35

expensive i got a grant towards the heat

7:38

pump all right but um

7:41

that was that's the green homes grant

7:43

that the government really screwed up on

7:45

but

7:46

until more people use them the price

7:48

isn't going to come down so you need

7:50

more people to start using them and then

7:52

the manufacturers will be able to

7:53

produce more in bulk and

7:55

ideally that that would be cheaper

7:57

though exactly and then what um if let's

8:00

say for example you have to give a

8:02

recommendation someone who maybe doesn't

8:04

have like sufficient funds yes what is

8:06

like something that you really recommend

8:07

them doing to help

8:09

use public transport

8:11

yeah and

8:13

walk

8:14

and yeah i just i think just being

8:16

conscious of energy is quite honestly i

8:19

mean

8:20

you know my sons

8:22

will have the heating up and wear shorts

8:25

i think put clothes on and turn the

8:27

heating off this is scrooge yeah i think

8:30

we're just we're profligate with the use

8:33

of you know

8:34

stuff that's

8:35

important really here's maybe a fun one

8:37

then give us uh give us like a positive

8:40

like uh

8:41

positive positive summary a positive

8:43

summary of

8:45

anything

8:47

listen to more music and go clubbing

8:50

that's what i would say

8:51

but in terms of climate or environment

8:54

is that is there a positive outlook

8:57

i'll be serious now the the the way out

8:59

is nuclear um fusion

9:01

right okay that's the way out this is

9:03

the big gesture that needs to happen now

9:05

this will this is the only way out um

9:08

you know you can have your wind farms

9:09

you can have all that and of course it

9:11

is it is useful yeah

9:13

but it's not going to deal with 7

9:14

billion people and a nuclear fusion is

9:17

the the route out of this it will remove

9:20

our reliance on fossil fuels it will

9:22

completely unburden us it will probably

9:24

burn us from all of the geopolitical

9:26

issues that we're currently facing

9:28

so

9:29

and you know

9:30

with the manhattan project

9:33

um i can't i don't know how many

9:34

hundreds of people were involved

9:36

and i don't know what to what the

9:38

equivalent cost would be in today's

9:39

terms right but i bet

9:42

um

9:44

i bet if we spent the same amount

9:46

collectively yeah or even if it was just

9:48

the west

9:49

europe uk

9:51

japan us if we all put our heads

9:54

together and said right this is a

9:55

technological problem not a scientific

9:57

problem it's just it's just technology

10:00

then we could find a way to actually get

10:02

it working i mean we're getting closer

10:04

all the time

10:05

but if we really put money into it in a

10:07

big way

10:08

that's a no-brainer

10:10

but it's got the word nuclear people

10:13

don't like that either they do not even

10:15

even if they are ignorant and stupid

10:18

about about the i mean this is just it's

10:20

just the sun harnessing the sun it's

10:22

just it's so elegant as well

10:25

anyway that's the positive thing fusion

10:28

right to your mp

10:30

thanks for watching this week's video
