0:00

so I make 65,000 for my best salary uh

0:03

roughly 40K I'm on 15 an hour uh 42,000

0:08

70,000 a year and I'm on 40,000 a year

0:11

so I think last year about 27,000 on the

0:14

tax return can you tell me what your

0:16

salary will be of your job uh 36,000

0:20

there are a lot of places you do go into

0:22

that will say they not advertising but

0:24

they they'll they'll take people on if

0:26

you go in and say I really want a job

0:27

they'll go all right we'll see what we

0:28

can do the cost living in Brighton is is

0:31

quite High I'm living at home for a year

0:33

first so

0:35

clever parents are giving the thumbs up

0:39

hi everyone hope you're all well and

0:41

welcome to a new episode of easy English

0:43

today I wanted to ask the question about

0:45

jobs I want to know what people do to

0:48

make a living in the UK how they trained

0:50

for that job if they even have a

0:52

University degree what advice they have

0:54

for getting on the job market and also

0:56

the taboo question how much do they make

1:00

before we get started if you're a

1:01

regular viewer of easy English but

1:03

you're not yet a subscriber then quickly

1:04

hit the button below here we go what do

1:07

you do for a living uh I work in Tech

1:12

and whereabouts do you is your work uh

1:14

so I actually work remotely uh I live in

1:17

London in uh chisik uh we have an office

1:20

in Houston opposite Google uh but

1:23

prominantly I what remote layout of ches

1:26

okay and then can I ask what is your

1:28

salary yeah sure uh so I make a a a

1:32

split between base salary and then

1:34

commission's wealth so I make 65,000 for

1:37

my base salary and then another 40,000

1:41

on top of that could you tell me what

1:43

you do for a living uh yeah I've just

1:45

graduated so I'm just about to start a

1:47

job working in finance in London

1:50

congratulations uh and uh where about

1:53

where abouts in London were you be

1:54

working uh in Stratford okay great and

1:57

then if you don't mind me asking can you

1:59

tell me what your salary will be of your

2:01

job uh 36,000 uh I'm a secondary school

2:05

teacher local and I teach physics so

2:08

yeah that's kind of the in Brighton in

2:09

Brighton yeah yeah yeah yeah and then

2:12

would you mind if if you don't mind me

2:13

telling me how much you earn your salary

2:16

uh roughly

2:17

40K uh I am head of geography so I'm a

2:20

secondary school teacher could you tell

2:22

me what your salary is uh I don't know

2:26

I'm a cleaner I work on built insights

2:29

okay so I go into a building like the

2:31

new builds and rip up all corx and all

2:34

the packaging on everything and then we

2:36

clean it thoroughly um and then we go

2:39

back again and we do another clean um

2:41

yeah that's and then I do end Tendencies

2:44

so when people move out of houses we go

2:46

and clean them and students

2:48

wheny student accommodations they're the

2:51

messiest but yeah we go in and we we

2:53

clean it or make it right it varies I'm

2:55

on 155 an hour but it depends on how

2:57

many hours we do I can earn like one 4 a

3:00

day or it all depends it depends if it's

3:03

an end of tency it's less so it all

3:05

varies you get busy periods probably

3:07

like end of terms and stuff yeah

3:09

definitely the building SES more money

3:10

than end tencies but it varies I work

3:13

for S fine rescue service in the control

3:16

room up at s covering East West and uh s

3:20

oh wow cool nice job and um can I ask

3:25

for free to say no how much you make for

3:27

in your salary uh 42 2000 should I go

3:31

first because it's B so we both both

3:34

work in recruitment I work in the back

3:37

office doing um on boarding and

3:40

compliance and reading through contracts

3:42

I work for a german-based satellite

3:45

manufacturer so I hire Engineers who

3:47

essentially design hardware for space

3:50

I'm on an internal salary and I'm on

3:52

about 70,000 a year um and then yeah I'd

3:56

get a kind of delivery commission based

3:59

both at the end of the year as well I

4:01

got you okay yeah so it's based on The

4:04

Hires I make for the company okay nice

4:07

and I'm on 40,000 a year um a painter

4:09

and decorator last year had a gap of

4:11

three months I chose not to work for

4:14

three months I think last year about

4:16

27,000 on a tax return I am a

4:20

psychologist and uh my next question

4:22

feel free to tell me to like buger off

4:24

um would you mind telling me your salary

4:26

as a psychologist yes to buger off

4:30

okay I'm not I'm sorry no no it's good

4:33

it's good no I'm not telling you my yeah

4:35

that's good because in some countries

4:37

it's completely fine say salary but in

4:40

Britain it's a bit more of a taboo now

4:42

true yes I think in Britain is a bit of

4:45

a there is a lot of assumption and

4:47

that's why espe I just would rather

4:49

great keep it private if you'd like to

5:42

5:45

english. video/ membership now back to

5:49

the video what would you say for if you

5:51

someone wants to try to get a job in

5:53

London would be like a minimum salary

5:55

they should be looking for to get I

5:57

think minimum if you want to have like a

5:59

nice life in London but your sensible is

6:01

probably 40 45,000 I would say is the

6:05

bare minimum would you say that is a

6:08

sustainable amount of money to live in

6:10

UK or specifically London maybe I would

6:13

say in London it's pushing it it's just

6:16

just about maybe scrape by but I'm

6:17

living at home for a year first so

6:21

clever parents are giving the thumbs

6:24

up okay so then what would you think

6:26

would be an acceptable uh wage to live

6:29

and survive in London and have like

6:30

enjoy a nice life

6:33

um I think 40,000 a year as a single

6:36

person you can live a reasonable life

6:39

but that probably wouldn't be enough to

6:41

get you on the housing ladder or save

6:42

much of the future or anything like that

6:45

uh I think around that value yeah around

6:47

40K is what what you'd be looking for

6:49

for like a kind of nice life and uh yeah

6:52

buying buying things that you want I

6:53

guess if you're coming to become a

6:55

teacher your starting salary is going to

6:57

be mid 20 grand so mid 20s probably for

7:01

for starting out as a newly qualified

7:04

teacher and I've been teaching for 20 OD

7:07

years so um yeah I mean you need to look

7:10

for something that is going to give you

7:13

a good salary so that you can enjoy

7:15

living by the Sea how how much would you

7:18

say would be in in Brighton and UK yeah

7:22

what would be like a a decent wage that

7:25

could means you could live a happy life

7:26

if you lived on your own as well um

7:28

30,000 do a year I would say what would

7:31

be like a good wage that you'd have to

7:34

earn to live a nice life in your opinion

7:37

gosh I don't know what would you say I

7:39

don't really know uh 30k plus yeah plus

7:42

yeah plus for Brighton yeah but

7:45

plus yeah oh probably 40 it's just

7:50

enough and is that the case across the

7:52

whole UK do you think that 40 is a good

7:55

minimum I think it's an average pay for

7:58

working full-time okay our rent and

8:01

bills in a two bed flat was about 22 a

8:05

month yeah yeah okay yeah so it's 40

8:09

plus is kind of uh it's on the bread

8:12

line probably and how does that compare

8:15

to the rest of the UK If you if you

8:16

understand well we've got friends that

8:18

live up in sheffi and my friends managed

8:19

to buy a house on her

8:21

own less than 200 Grand and it's a three

8:24

better yeah I can feel like the

8:27

resentment

8:29

you pay to live down here don't you I

8:31

mean it's amazing it's by the Sea

8:32

Brighton's got such a good social

8:34

exactly thing going on so you know

8:37

living in the south of England is super

8:38

expensive did you have to get a degree

8:40

did you study for it yes specifically

8:43

psychology both in Italy and here and is

8:46

that necessary uh for to be a

8:49

psychologist in to be a reg like a

8:51

qualified clinical psychologist yes what

8:55

did you do in order to get your job like

8:57

uh education wise did you go to

8:58

university yeah I studied psychology

9:01

which I think helps for my role because

9:03

it helps me understand myself and also

9:07

people do you think you even need to

9:10

have a degree in order to work in most

9:12

Fields outside of you know being a

9:14

doctor or something like this other than

9:16

those things I I would say absolutely

9:18

not I would say if in terms of sort of

9:21

work practicality and apprenti ship or

9:22

things like that probably more practical

9:24

in most cases but you should go to UNI

9:27

if you want to for the for the

9:28

experience do you have to do a degree to

9:30

become teacher is it advised to if you

9:32

wanted to get on that into that job

9:33

market you uh yeah you would need a

9:36

degree to to become a teacher um it's

9:38

not always in the subject that you're

9:40

looking to teach in so a lot of teachers

9:43

who do teach physics didn't do a Physics

9:45

degree um but it is desirable and I

9:48

think makes you get makes you more more

9:50

desirable candidate but do you think it

9:52

helps to have a degree in general to no

9:55

no I don't I don't think that's a

9:57

requirement anymore there's so many jobs

9:59

you can do now that that doesn't need

10:02

further education because you can learn

10:04

on the job there's Apprentice

10:05

apprenticeships and um lots of other

10:08

jobs where you can train and Tradesmen

10:11

and all kinds of jobs where you can you

10:12

don't need to um have a university

10:15

education to do like entry level yeah

10:18

positions yeah yeah yeah because going

10:19

to University is super expensive so you

10:21

need to really want to do that so um you

10:24

can there's so many other jobs that you

10:26

can do that that don't require that that

10:28

high level of Education would you say

10:31

that people need to have a degree

10:34

nowadays you think I don't think so no

10:36

you think entry level and apprenti ships

10:38

are I think that's the way forward is

10:39

learning on the learning actually on the

10:41

job did you study to do this

10:43

specifically or did you need a degree to

10:46

do this no neither of us went to

10:47

University do you have any advice in

10:49

terms of how to get a job any tips or

10:51

tricks just keep looking don't give up

10:53

don't just look online and just think oh

10:56

you know go in and ask people places you

10:58

know cuz a lot of people don't advertise

11:00

so just go in and ask if you feel like

11:02

you want to do something somewhere in a

11:03

certain shop go in I think cuz degrees

11:06

are diminishing and value very much so

11:08

unless you're going to go to quite a

11:10

well regarded University you'd probably

11:11

be better off looking at alternative

11:13

qualifications that are going to be more

11:15

practical put you in less debt you need

11:17

to make sure that you look around um

11:20

look around for what you're actually

11:22

interested in um and don't necessarily

11:25

settle on kind of the first thing that

11:27

you see there are obviously depend on

11:29

what you're looking for but there are a

11:30

lot of jobs uh out there in various

11:33

markets and it does require a little bit

11:34

of kind of weighing up your options and

11:37

yeah don't don't just settle on the

11:38

first thing I think I see I think hard

11:40

work hard work pays off hard work pays

11:43

off in whatever you do whatever job you

11:46

do if you work hard you will succeed and

11:49

and never give up really just keep

11:50

persevering and you will eventually get

11:53

to where you want to be nice very nice

11:55

you said what advice would you give in

11:56

order to get the jobs that you had or

11:58

similar I reckon if you get given an

12:00

opportunity and you don't what's going

12:02

on and you don't think you can do it

12:04

just give it a go anyway learn as you

12:06

can don't be afraid to ask questions

12:10

work hard like obviously if you're doing

12:12

a degree you have to work really hard to

12:13

get that but if you haven't got that

12:14

behind you you've got to just work hard

12:17

be willing and open to new things in the

12:19

work environment and yeah just work your

12:22

way up in that respect really I would

12:25

try and plan out what path you want to

12:27

take so sort of map ahead of time the

12:30

career trajectory and then take the

12:32

steps necessary to make that happen so

12:35

often you'll need a University degree to

12:37

get entry level roles um so find what

12:40

you're interested in map out the process

12:42

and then take the necessary steps to to

12:45

make it happen work hard Network the

12:47

world your oyer thanks for watching this

12:50

week's episode what a surprise almost

12:52

every single person told me their wage

12:55

bizarre let us know in the comments

12:56

below if you're thinking about joining

12:58

the UK job market and as always we'll

13:00

see you next time t
