hello welcome to easy english so today
0:02
i'm on the beach and out to find out
0:04
what the people of brighton think of the
0:05
monarchy
0:06
this is what brits think of the royal
0:09
family here we go
0:11
[Music]
0:25
i think
0:26
the royal family is
0:29
they have a lot of secrets i think
0:33
sort of the royal
0:36
facade needs to be broken down i think
0:39
people are really interested in finding
0:41
out about what their life is really like
0:44
and
0:44
all of the things that people have
0:47
hidden
0:48
like in the past
0:50
i think the royal family is a great
0:51
institution i'm glad it's going to be
0:53
slimmed down i think it's too big yeah
0:55
too cumbersome yeah what is your general
0:58
opinion of the royal family
1:01
i think my opinion of the royal family
1:03
have changed over the years
1:06
i
1:08
when i was younger i
1:10
from a welsh background obviously i use
1:12
kind of like always questioned about
1:15
the the kind of the value and worth of
1:18
the royal family
1:19
but as i've grown older
1:22
and certainly an environment in which we
1:23
live in now when we talk about the
1:25
environment
1:26
i think that the cutting edge of it and
1:28
i think they are leading
1:29
well i think they're generally an
1:32
anachronism
1:33
but
1:34
as i my life has progressed
1:37
i've gone from thinking they're sort of
1:39
the devilish side of society
1:42
over-privileged
1:44
over-educated but in a very narrow band
1:48
right to thinking that actually many
1:51
many people
1:52
love that feeling of continuity
1:55
in times of
1:57
unprecedented
1:59
catastrophic sometimes change okay so
2:02
let's ask the question then uh what are
2:04
your thoughts generally speaking right
2:06
now on the royal family
2:11
i think they do a good job i think
2:14
this next generation will change things
2:17
i think they're
2:19
going to be more modern they're going to
2:20
be i think they're going to interact
2:22
with the public in
2:25
a more approachable way not so aloof um
2:29
i think it's quite exciting yeah what
2:31
are your sort of general thoughts
2:33
uh on the royal family as a whole as the
2:36
firm
2:39
i hate the word firm i think it's a
2:41
horrible way to uh describe them i think
2:44
they are the royal family i'm very proud
2:46
of them i'm proud to be british
2:48
and um i think they do an awful lot of
2:52
good
2:53
by just being there holding the country
2:55
together particularly the queen
2:57
yeah and she's done the most wonderful
2:59
job um all these years that she's been
3:02
on the throne which is a long time yeah
3:05
and
3:07
they bring huge amount of tourists into
3:10
the country which brings an awful lot of
3:12
revenue into the country and i think one
3:15
of the things that people forget when
3:16
they say oh well of course they own all
3:18
these palaces and this and the other
3:20
they're actually belong to the nation
3:21
most of them
3:22
and they employ an advanced
3:25
amount of people

3:55
colloquial and informal words used in
3:58
each episode
3:59
what are your thoughts yeah very similar
4:01
actually very similar um yeah i think i
4:04
think charles was a has probably been a
4:06
sort of go-between between the old
4:08
traditional royalty that's as say stood
4:11
aloof and was slightly remote which i
4:13
think
4:14
to be honest the generation probably
4:17
before hours enjoyed because they sort
4:20
of set them on a on a pedestal and they
4:22
represented something quite iconic and
4:25
different
4:26
whereas i think as the generations have
4:29
changed and and the world has changed
4:32
really um
4:34
that sort of
4:35
that sort of different hierarchical
4:38
structure has become
4:40
very much softened and therefore
4:42
the sort of the royalty has had to move
4:45
towards the
4:46
there we say the common man
4:49
in a more in a more uh yeah in a more
4:53
acceptable way really
4:55
i mean i think the royal family through
4:57
the years has been like
4:59
a lot of people are really interested in
5:01
them
5:02
but
5:03
i
5:04
there's a lot of like misconceptions
5:06
about the royal family and like
5:08
what they
5:10
are actually like in real life
5:13
i think
5:14
they're kind of glorified and their life
5:17
is probably not as
5:19
like sort of romanticized as what people
5:22
think
5:23
um it's probably quite hard to sort of
5:26
keep themselves to themselves and
5:29
actually do like their royal duties
5:32
as people hope that they do
5:34
but i think that prince william and
5:39
are doing a great job at the moment and
5:42
um
5:42
he's doing this earth shot thing which i
5:44
think is a wonderful enterprise
5:47
and particularly is he not just leaving
5:49
it in the uk he's taking the earth shot
5:51
around the world and so i think the next
5:53
one is the united states so i think
5:55
that's a very important time
5:57
so he's championing something but the
5:59
other thing i think about him is that
6:01
he's thinking about the young people and
6:03
their futures
6:05
he said at the time that he's concerned
6:07
about
6:08
his family and he was able to take the
6:11
current concerns for his family to the
6:13
greater ordinance audience all the
6:15
families
6:16
that have young children
6:18
how nervous they are how challenged they
6:20
are by the future so i think he's
6:22
flagging up some real issues so come on
6:24
william
6:25
give us some more and the queen is
6:27
wonderful we love queenie yeah we love
6:29
her a bit and she served her nation
6:32
with diligence throughout the years she
6:34
said she'd serve and she has served wow
6:37
there are a few wasters on the edges but
6:39
that's life
6:40
char charles i think has started it in a
6:43
very
6:44
limited way but i think he sort of
6:46
exactly broke the mold but he certainly
6:48
sort of
6:49
started to put sort of steps out there
6:52
to to to make some changes uh not always
6:55
appreciated as i'm sure we all realize
6:57
but in his own ways
6:59
and and then they say william and kate
7:01
have really picked up the mantle and
7:03
and and gone on i'm not sure whether
7:06
harry has probably gone a step too far
7:10
really i think he's probably
7:12
i don't know what you think in terms of
7:14
you know i think he's he's
7:17
feels free enough to say i don't want to
7:19
do this i'm going to go
7:21
he's not hide bound by the traditions
7:23
that yeah a younger sibling would have
7:26
been perhaps historically in the sense
7:28
that wayan and andrew were behind
7:31
charles i suppose he's broken those
7:33
boundaries doesn't he he said well you
7:35
know i'm knocking out a little bit yeah
7:37
i'm not going to be part of the the
7:39
the firm as it were
7:41
yeah so i'm gonna you know strike do my
7:43
own thing strike my and i don't think
7:45
the queen has had a lot of choices
7:47
really i think she's been bound by a
7:49
protocol and
7:51
this is what you've got to do and this
7:53
is how you do it and and i yeah i just
7:55
think this next generation will
7:58
do it a little bit more their way
8:00
would you say do you think we still need
8:02
them are they still relevant do we
8:04
benefit from having a royal family
8:06
well
8:07
only relevant i think as society has
8:10
become
8:11
more fractured
8:13
and
8:14
strange
8:16
and although they are strange
8:19
i think in an odd way
8:21
they represent some people
8:24
i do and i would never have you know 50
8:28
60 years ago if i'd had an opinion 60
8:31
years ago i wouldn't have ever thought
8:33
i'd hear that come out of my mouth
8:36
do you think we need a royal family
8:38
still um
8:40
i would say not but i think a lot of
8:43
people really like
8:46
idolise them and
8:48
see them as massive celebrities yes
8:53
don't so
8:53
difference of opinions i guess do you
8:55
think there's um positives and negatives
8:58
to not having them
9:00
yeah definitely so the positives
9:03
to not having the royal family i think
9:06
there's less sort of
9:08
hierarchy in our society but i think
9:12
the negatives of not having them a lot
9:14
of people would feel
9:16
like the past is kind of
9:19
not carried into the present and they'll
9:21
feel like
9:22
really
9:24
sort of nostalgic about what used to be
9:28
really important in our society
9:30
okay so are you kind of
9:33
summarizing that we kind of keep them
9:34
but that we give them less
9:36
sort of uh we idolize them a little bit
9:38
less or give them less power yeah
9:41
yeah definitely i think so
9:42
interesting the point you're making last
9:44
a bit a minute ago about you know harry
9:46
kind of opting out and the queen kind of
9:48
maybe having to just take this all on
9:50
yeah
9:51
do we need them do you think we need the
9:53
royal family anymore i think it's going
9:55
to be i think that i think charles
9:57
i think william and kate will thin
9:59
thin the royal family down i think it's
10:01
going to get thinner and thinner and
10:03
thinner
10:04
yeah in terms of sort of
10:06
not exactly hangers on but you know the
10:08
historically it's been a it's been a lot
10:10
of people hasn't it you know the royal
10:12
family has been married
10:14
and you probably don't need all the
10:16
duke of gloucesters and all that sort of
10:18
lot i think i think in terms of the core
10:21
i think they do
10:22
you know they are still very well
10:24
respected around the world and i think
10:27
they do
10:28
offer
10:29
a balance in the community
10:32
well
10:33
no all of them really i think they
10:36
because because they have shown the
10:38
queen has
10:39
demonstrated her father's values i mean
10:42
she did take on her father's valued
10:44
values and
10:47
has not changed very much
10:50
and i think that's kind of
10:52
representative of her generation you
10:54
know very much the war years
10:56
and all that and then you've got
10:59
her son particularly prince charles
11:02
brought up in public school
11:04
if he's odd well that would that would
11:07
account for it i think
11:09
not not having a broad enough
11:12
range of experiences as a child
11:15
and then the younger royals
11:18
they you know
11:19
prince william wasn't expected to marry
11:21
a virgin
11:23
was able to establish a relationship an
11:26
adult relationship before any commitment
11:28
was made
11:30
and met his wife's family who were
11:33
you know they'd work they what they call
11:35
them trolley dollies on an airline
11:39
you know i mean so i think the young
11:42
royals
11:44
might have a happier experience and i
11:46
hope they have a happier experience
11:49
can i ask them because um usually my
11:51
next question to people is um
11:54
do you think we still need them which i
11:56
think you say yes because they say we it
11:58
keeps jobs and they actually do bring
12:01
huge amounts of people in a lot of
12:03
revenue yeah but but my review then
12:07
would be as you think they are important
12:09
to kind of british to britain
12:12
uh do you think they're still relevant
12:13
or they're still current
12:15
with
12:16
today's climate today's society today's
12:19
culture yes i do um i think the queen
12:23
i mean being 95 now and not so well
12:27
um
12:28
has got to sort of i mean i'm sure she
12:30
cares an awful lot which is not sort of
12:32
quite out there at the moment you know
12:34
they've got to be careful with her
12:36
charles has always always been very
12:39
conscious of being green
12:41
and the future
12:42
and climate change and everything else
12:44
and all his speech is attached to that
12:47
and uh his projects and things all and
12:50
his if one went to highgrove which i
12:52
haven't done but i my some of my family
12:55
haves is wonderful
12:57
you know he's very caring about how
12:59
things work and keeping wildlife going
13:01
and all that sort of thing
13:03
and
13:04
william being next in line
13:07
as we know has just done these various
13:09
global
13:11
i can't remember what it was called but
13:13
global something rather
13:14
and gave out these prizes to people
13:17
who've got initiatives into how to
13:21
you know get power from the sea or
13:22
whatever it was that they're doing and i
13:24
think he's
13:26
highly motivated i know and
13:29
hopefully
13:30
if he gets the chance of very will be a
13:32
very good king
13:35
with a modern twist
13:37
thanks for watching this week's episode
13:39

13:40
thoughts on the british royal family and
13:42
of your royal family if you haven't and

we'll see you next week bye
13:50
[Music]
14:00
