hello welcome to easy english so today

0:02

i'm on the beach and i want to know the

0:04

people of brighton think of their

0:06

cousins across the pond

0:07

this is what brits think of americans

0:10

here we go

0:11

[Music]

0:22

what is what are your general thoughts

0:25

on americans

0:26

my general thoughts on americans are i

0:29

think they're quite brash they're quite

0:32

loud people

0:33

[Music]

0:35

i was actually

0:36

kicked off facebook

0:38

for 24 hours for making a remark about

0:41

the

0:42

americans there's a big contrast between

0:45

everybody it's not just england but

0:47

everybody's awareness of american

0:49

culture through

0:51

films and tv series and stuff and then

0:53

how it is in real life and they have a

0:56

reciprocal lack of understanding of

0:58

other people's cultures partly maybe

1:01

because

1:02

their media system is just

1:05

so big and it pumps out so much stuff

1:08

like they'll remake everything right the

1:11

ring

1:12

uh the office the this to that they

1:14

remake it in their own light so

1:16

they

1:17

they don't get as much cultural

1:19

education as maybe other countries do

1:22

first of all what are your general

1:23

thoughts on

1:25

americans u.s citizens

1:28

okay i suppose um

1:29

[Music]

1:31

mainly we meet americans when we travel

1:33

abroad anyway

1:35

and so we see them as tourists

1:38

and don't always have the best opinion

1:40

of them as as tourists

1:43

they're quite loud and brash and

1:45

um

1:46

yeah and i guess weight is an

1:48

interesting issue as well because we

1:50

always see very overweight americans

1:53

so that sort of perception

1:56

right my thoughts um a bit mixed in a

1:59

way

2:00

because um as we were growing up in

2:03

poverty stricken england when americans

2:05

came over here they always seem to have

2:08

lots of money

2:09

and

2:10

perhaps a little bit louder than we are

2:13

however

2:15

after holidaying in america i found them

2:18

incredibly kind

2:20

quite sort of gentle and interested

2:23

interested in people in england

2:25

and

2:26

the royal family

2:28

which i didn't know that much about

2:31

and also incredibly polite on the roads

2:34

because they don't drive as fast as we

2:37

do and how about you what are your

2:39

thoughts on the americans

2:40

i think they're they can be rude and

2:42

abrupt yeah

2:44

i don't like donald trump

2:47

not many people do no

2:50

my experience of

2:52

being with americans

2:55

in america

2:56

is that they are

2:58

they were always very friendly

3:01

very welcoming okay

3:03

and particularly in new york for example

3:05

i met quite a few people in new york

3:08

and they were

3:09

like firm but fair yeah which and i

3:12

think they're very honest

3:14

uh

3:16

only through the sort of i suppose

3:18

there's stereotypes that you know and

3:20

create through yourself everything

3:22

they've seen as a as a nation very

3:23

patriotic patriotic yeah uh compared to

3:28

compared to what perhaps we're more

3:29

divided about they hear um i think seems

3:32

to be from whatever political background

3:35

they are in america i'd say that they

3:37

all appear very to believe in the flag

3:39

and

3:40

freedom of speech and

3:42

all the all the uh

3:44

what's the meant the various amendments

3:46

that they have oh yeah yeah um so i

3:48

think they're probably more

3:51

together in some ways than perhaps we

3:53

are on certain things but they're also

3:55

very different from different different

3:57

polarizing views as well i suppose

3:59

a general overview of u.s citizens is

4:01

it's a vast mixture this country is a

4:04

small mixture

4:05

but yeah lots of people think americans

4:08

are

4:09

the big country

4:11

lazy fat as a lot of people say but i've

4:13

met and worked with americans who are

4:16

just not like that

4:17

and people from different states

4:20

states next door behave and act totally

4:22

differently

4:23

uh

4:24

i've not traveled too much in the us

4:26

however i've been to the east coast uh

4:29

new york and boston my perception has

4:32

been very good

4:34

new yorkers

4:36

slightly more brash than the bostonians

4:38

i guess but i think the perception is

4:40

very much that they are

4:42

slightly

4:43

naive ignorant perhaps

4:46

they when you get this perception that

4:48

they're all obese and and love huge

4:50

portions i can agree on the huge

4:52

portions but i don't know if it's fair

4:53

that they're all naive and ignorant um

4:57

and i guess on the on the reverse that

4:58

they think that we are

5:00

very posh and all speak well and drink

5:03

tea and eat scones and again that's not

5:05

who we all are nice um but yeah i think

5:08

that's just there are a lot of

5:09

stereotypes

5:11

well i'm a bit biased because i've got

5:14

relatives in america so

5:17

yeah i've got relatives in california

5:19

and i i think they're great they're

5:20

really friendly and open and

5:23

do they have any

5:25

uh

5:27

character traits that kind of connect

5:28

them all together that you say like

5:30

outstanding character traits

5:32

i think they're they're very warm and

5:34

friendly and hospitable

5:37

but i do love english people too but

5:40

don't get me wrong

6:38

to start your first lesson and get ten

6:40

6:43

been to uh the us yes i have whereabouts

6:46

in the usa i um i did the florida thing

6:50

and went to universal studios etc

6:53

and it was fantastic had a fantastic

6:55

time the americans were lovely it was

6:57

very clean

6:59

um so yeah i had a really good time

7:01

there okay and they seem to like the

7:02

english

7:04

yeah yeah

7:05

we are their cousins they have to be

7:07

slightly nice to us

7:09

my aunt used to live there as well in

7:10

new york so i remember new york in the

7:13

um

7:14

in the early 70s

7:16

and

7:17

traveling down on my own on a greyhound

7:19

bus

7:20

from um

7:22

from the airport out to where she lived

7:24

and i was 15 years old i don't think you

7:26

probably let that happen now where

7:28

abouts in america did you go to been to

7:30

california twice

7:32

and we've also been to florida

7:35

new york

7:37

yes

7:38

uh i've worked with quite a few people

7:40

from the us i suppose through work

7:43

primarily from the east coast and then

7:45

some from the west coast but i think

7:47

there's such a different range of people

7:49

across the state such as such a vast

7:50

country

7:51

um

7:52

vastly different cultures and the

7:54

demographics really so

7:56

i suppose it depends on where where you

7:59

go what different kind of people you

8:00

experience if you could take a character

8:03

trait or a cultural thing from the us

8:06

and bring it to uk that to improve you

8:08

like uk life or uk culture yeah is there

8:11

something that you like that you take uh

8:13

yeah i think i'm a huge sports fan i

8:16

think the the college sport is amazing

8:19

and yeah so i went to university and

8:22

played first team tennis but i was

8:25

playing in front of maybe three people

8:26

whereas over there it's as big as you

8:29

know some

8:30

big tournaments and i think it's the

8:31

same for all sport so i think that

8:33

culture of sports in college and

8:35

university being of huge importance to

8:37

getting into a professional sport would

8:40

be really really cool right because you

8:41

get kind of sponsored yeah yeah

8:42

sponsored and you get drafted into the

8:44

into the professional leagues as well

8:47

right nice well i said i guess their uh

8:52

lack of reserve i suppose how does that

8:54

that contrast with with how you see

8:56

people in our country americans are more

8:59

um

9:00

they give their opinion more freely i

9:02

think

9:03

and that's not necessarily a bad

9:05

a bad thing i think we probably could

9:07

learn a bit more from that we're

9:09

sometimes too reticent too shy

9:11

to say what we think

9:13

um too close whereas americans are much

9:14

more open you can sort of tell what

9:16

they're thinking and feeling right

9:18

is there anything that you would take

9:19

from their culture or from their sort of

9:21

personality traits that would improve

9:23

britain yes they seem to be very

9:27

quite happy to what we call blow your

9:29

own trumpets

9:31

whereas we always downplay anything

9:34

about ourselves and i think that's good

9:36

i think it must be good for children to

9:39

have confidence in themselves yeah yeah

9:41

you can toot your own horn

9:44

definitely yeah yeah i know you mean

9:46

we're quite it it's you have to be

9:48

self-deprecating

9:49

yes exactly yes

9:52

that positivity i think generally i

9:54

think would would go down pretty well i

9:56

think is it

9:58

we're a bit gone

10:00

self-deprecating or something

10:01

self-deprecation is fine yeah and i

10:03

think that's quite a nice trait but i

10:06

think sometimes it can go a bit far and

10:08

i think a lot of people consider put

10:09

themselves down or it can be a bit

10:11

oppressive right

10:13

the british can be a bit oppressed yeah

10:16

whereas i feel like the americans are

10:17

much more

10:19

open to

10:20

what life can bring yeah yeah

10:23

um

10:25

the one thing i think americans have got

10:28

a lot of people don't agree with is they

10:29

believe in their country

10:31

majority i know perhaps not everyone but

10:34

i think the americans say and you know

10:36

yeah and uh you know and i'm proud of it

10:38

and i think britain's

10:40

should be the same

10:41

and there's lots of reasons why they're

10:43

probably not

10:44

yeah but we should be proud of what

10:45

we've got there's a bit of a faux pas

10:47

here to be kind of proud of your nation

10:49

yes yeah people are embarrassed i think

10:52

too

10:53

thanks for watching this week's episode

10:54

let us know in the comments below your

10:56

thoughts on the us citizens and we'll

10:58

see you next week bye

11:00

there were clips on facebook showing

11:02

americans trying to

11:05

aggravate and annoy the guards of honor

11:07

at

11:07

the castle so i put the comments and

11:11

i was kicked off of

11:12
