0:10

holland

0:11

0:27

scandinavia what's up what's south oh uh

0:30

0:42

it's

0:52

exactly

0:53

exactly but i don't know which king

0:54

though

0:55

i don't recognize this trap either looks

0:58

like a king of england of some kind i

1:00

don't know yeah you're on top james or

1:03

i never know any of them i could

1:04

completely guess that james somebody

1:06

[Music]

1:08

no i'm not quite getting who that is no

1:16

wow you're the first person to get that

1:19

no idea

1:21

is that a really young best

1:24

possible oh gohan cruyff did you like

1:26

football you like football that's your

1:28

i'm crying oh i was a disaster what do

1:30

you think carleton because you've got

1:31

two

1:32

so and there is a correlation of all

1:34

these people

1:35

they're they're all royalties

1:38

not all royalties but they're all from

1:39

one country

1:40

oh they're all from england no

1:44

dutch connection dutch yes this is all

1:46

done

1:47

are they all dutch oh they're all dutch

1:50

so there we go so they all dutch they're

1:52

now

1:55

these people all dutch hello welcome to

1:57

easy english so today we're making a

2:00

video with our friends easy dutch i want

2:03

to know what the people of britain think

2:05

of the dutch if they've ever been to the

2:07

netherlands if they've ever met dutch

2:09

people

2:10

any stereotypes they had about dutch

2:12

people

2:13

and what about dutch culture or dutch

2:15

character trait would improve british

2:17

life

2:18

now our friends either dutch are making

2:20

the counter question to our episode

2:23

they're asking the dutch what they think

2:25

of the brits but back to our episode

2:27

this is what british people think of the

2:30

dutch before we start don't forget to

2:33

like and subscribe

2:35

here we go i feel like brits don't

2:37

really have much of a dutch connection

2:39

really no

2:41

no well amsterdam

2:44

cafe shops in terms of dutch dutch

2:46

people or the

2:47

nation of the netherlands or even

2:50

holland

2:51

what do you know about nothing about

2:53

that country i've never not even been

2:55

there to visit never been there at all

2:57

in your life no would you like to go at

2:59

some point no

3:01

whereabouts in the netherlands have you

3:03

been

3:04

pretty much everywhere i'd say really

3:06

yeah i've toured

3:07

netherlands heavily yeah have you ever

3:09

been to the netherlands before i've been

3:11

to amsterdam i've taught in amsterdam

3:14

which is quite exciting what about your

3:15

experience have you been you went to the

3:16

netherlands right yeah i've been to the

3:18

netherlands um

3:22

was it

3:23

so embarrassing

3:25

is that is that amsterdam is that yeah

3:27

yeah

3:28

was it for a hen park no it wasn't okay

3:31

no i went a lot when i was young um when

3:34

i was a student and

3:37

like when i went intervaling i ended up

3:39

in

3:40

amsterdam right and obviously there was

3:43

all the things that students that age

3:46

and joy

3:47

and so that was part of the attraction

3:48

was to go there and meet our friends

3:51

party

3:52

going stoned

3:54

but have you been to the netherlands

3:56

yeah i've been to amsterdam a couple of

3:57

times okay that's where most people end

3:59

up going though which is really cliche

4:01

yeah okay

4:03

and when did you go are you 18 17 18

4:05

yeah

4:06

and uh more recently a stag do

4:09

so it couldn't be any more cliche

4:11

visiting to be honest uh amsterdam for

4:13

uh the usual kind of uh business

4:16

fact-finding trips

4:18

and

4:19

got her down for the european cup

4:20

winners cup final 1991

4:23

he's been mostly everywhere

4:25

following manchester united

4:27

managed by johan cruyff at the time have

4:29

you been to the netherlands yeah yeah

4:31

many times

4:32

she she dated a dutch man i dated it

4:35

yeah i didn't educate you very well on

4:37

dutch people

4:39

well

4:40

do

5:38

to start your first lesson and get ten

5:40

dollars in lesson credits there's like a

5:42

character trait that you'd recognize in

5:44

dutch people yeah they're very tall

5:47

they're pretty chilled out

5:48

um and yeah they're quite i don't know

5:52

they're just they're quite nice i like

5:54

the dutch i think they're very i think

5:55

they're very um

5:57

progressive and yet quite old-fashioned

6:00

right interesting yeah why did you say

6:02

old-fashioned because they sort of have

6:04

their traditions and their ways of doing

6:06

things uh which are quite traditional

6:09

uh you know

6:10

because they also have a royal family oh

6:12

no i'm not bothered about that but yeah

6:15

that could be part of it yeah so i would

6:17

say that uh in my experience

6:20

usually quite outgoing friendly generous

6:24

yeah

6:24

uh

6:26

some

6:27

people might say they're kind of uh

6:30

a confident

6:32

bunch of people okay uh

6:35

willing to kind of share their thoughts

6:37

and opinions what do you think of the

6:39

dutch people that you met their english

6:41

is incredible yeah i once had a very

6:44

amusing episode where i uh

6:46

i went into the street and i was trying

6:48

to find how to get from a to b because i

6:50

was working there and i went up to this

6:52

guy who was sort of smartly suited i

6:53

said you'd speak english and he said yes

6:57

as in of course i speak english

7:00

are there any stereotypes that you had

7:02

about dutch people before you went there

7:04

and how did they kind of match up oh

7:06

yeah so stereotypes cycling flat

7:10

surfaces and the people uh i heard you

7:12

for a different

7:14

pronunciation the

7:16

people being

7:18

a weird combination between quite staid

7:21

and

7:22

uh

7:24

standoffish and then incredibly free and

7:26

open and mostly naked and sexual

7:29

or before you went there did you have a

7:31

stereotype

7:33

of what dutch people would be like and

7:34

how did that kind of compare i think the

7:36

only stereotype before i went was the

7:38

austin powers

7:39

freaky dicky dutch guy i can't remember

7:41

who his character was gold gold member

7:44

was it goldman yeah

7:46

i don't know if that was the uh that's

7:49

the most uh fairest representation

7:51

well there's that thing about

7:54

you know going dutch and all that so

7:56

they could be quite mean in a sense

7:58

you'd go out for it to a restaurant or

7:59

something and it's like well you had the

8:01

drink

8:02

yeah but going dutch is when you share

8:04

the cost of a meal you know they haven't

8:06

got that english thing about um the man

8:08

should pay which is good it's part of

8:09

their progressiveness really but it

8:11

could come over slightly mean

8:14

there were i mean there's a stereotype

8:16

that i think the brits have that the

8:18

that never bothers me but the brits say

8:20

oh they're very direct and i say well

8:23

fine i'm happy with direct um and did

8:27

that match up oh completely yeah but i

8:29

was completely fine with that it makes

8:30

life a lot easier if you're asking

8:32

directions direct if you're

8:35

uh

8:36

i don't know ask you a question then you

8:38

get a direct answer i'm i'm fine with

8:40

that yeah none of this is beating around

8:42

the bush

8:43

around the bush

8:44

and you know if if

8:46

if somebody bumps into you they say

8:48

sorry that's oh terribly sorry sort of

8:50

you know i'm not sure about whether i

8:52

should say tory or not

8:54

it's very sort of straightforward from

8:56

your experience as a 17 18 year old

8:58

smoking weed in amsterdam

9:00

is there like a cultural thing or

9:02

character trait which you could take

9:04

from the netherlands and put into

9:06

britain and make it kind of better that

9:08

would improve british people culture

9:10

just just by being a bit more laid back

9:12

and chilled out what would you then take

9:15

as sony's been to the netherlands quite

9:16

a lot what would you take from culture

9:17

character anything from the netherlands

9:19

that would improve like british life oh

9:22

um well i don't know about these days

9:23

because politically it's changed a great

9:25

deal um i'd say it's

9:27

not the same place it used to be 20

9:29

years ago to be honest but

9:30

what i

9:31

largely enjoyed about it is it's very

9:33

very friendly

9:35

very open very welcoming

9:37

um

9:40

we are quite

9:42

uh conservative in our thinking here

9:44

tradition traditionally unless you're in

9:46

brighton but

9:47

um

9:48

and over there i would say

9:51

you know i've made friends with fruit

9:52

farmers who run festivals as i've made

9:55

friends with wild

9:57

people that run clubs and bars through

9:59

to the early hours of the morning um

10:04

but they will actually rock up with some

10:06

clogs on and think it's perfectly fine

10:08

as well it's i guess it's that

10:11

they let go of what what we all think is

10:13

cool here

10:15

right they don't even consider that

10:16

there

10:17

so there's

10:18

there's less less inhibitions

10:21

and you bring that over

10:22

i would love to that'd be great wouldn't

10:24

it yeah

10:26

i get there's much more of a sense of

10:29

equality and equity whether that's a

10:31

value i don't know but there's a concern

10:34

for

10:36

the underdog and more of a concern for

10:38

being more equal and economically they

10:40

are more equal the gap between the

10:42

lowest bait and high speed is nowhere

10:44

near as great as it is like a political

10:46

thing

10:47

rather than social thing i'm not

10:49

answering your social question perhaps

10:50

but as a political thing that but as a

10:53

social thing um i don't know i didn't

10:55

get enough

10:56

of a sense of difference

10:58

because there was i get a sense that

11:00

socially maybe they're slightly closer

11:02

to us sense of humor is certainly closer

11:04

they do they can do sarcasm

11:07

up in sweden sarcasm doesn't work don't

11:10

get it

11:12

occasionally they find it funny because

11:13

they're oh this is an english sense of

11:15

humor it's so amusing they quite like um

11:18

we're dutch it's the same we've made the

11:21

wrong decision by uh moving out of

11:22

europe in terms of the european union we

11:24

could be more like the netherlands by

11:26

still being in the european union but

11:28

that's a kind of that's a bit too

11:29

political for this uh

11:31

okay and then what about a character

11:32

trait is there a character yeah so i

11:34

think they're kind of uh again

11:36

generalizations but uh

11:39

you know kind of

11:40

british are perhaps more reserved

11:42

right a bit kind of claimed to be a bit

11:44

shyer and that was i respect and perhaps

11:47

be a bit more outgoing and kind of

11:49

approachable would be one thing nice

11:52

that's a good one

11:53

brilliant

11:55

thanks for watching this week's episode

11:57

11:58

episodes in the comments below and any

opinions you have on the dutch and we'll
