hello welcome to easy english so today

0:02

we're on the beach and we want to find

0:03

out what brits think about italians now

0:06

this is a special episode because easy

0:08

italian are going to find out what

0:10

italians think of brits which you can

0:12

watch up here

0:14

but let's get back to it this is what

0:15

brits think about italians

0:17

tell me uh what's your opinion on

0:21

italians

0:22

uh

0:23

italians can cook

0:25

and they're very

0:26

well dressed

0:28

and they're very stylish and uh they're

0:31

very exotic and usually quite sexy

0:34

one of my really good friends is italian

0:35

we play volleyball together and she

0:37

meets all of those criteria actually oh

0:39

really yeah i don't think it's a

0:40

stereotype so she has you over to cook

0:43

quite a lot she does actually yes and

0:44

she makes lots of pasta and pizza but i

0:46

think that's because that's what i ask

0:47

for i think i'm the stereotype not hair

0:50

what do you think about italians

0:53

i think they're amazing i think the the

0:55

fact that they are

0:56

so gregarious so charming they love

0:59

their food and they put it all out there

1:01

there's very little in terms of uh

1:03

reserve behavior

1:04

i think the northern italians can in

1:06

themselves very very sophisticated

1:09

you know okay um i remember i was in a

1:12

place called ventamilia which is just on

1:14

the border as you go from uh

1:17

south of france

1:19

nice

1:19

that way you just cross over you go

1:21

through a tunnel you're in italy

1:23

ventamilia

1:25

uh and uh i was sitting outside a cafe

1:28

one evening having a brand in a cigar or

1:30

something like that just thoroughly

1:32

enjoying being a foreigner but no

1:34

british there which is great one of

1:36

those reasons one of the reasons i went

1:37

there and this guy came to me very

1:39

elegant sort of guy about six foot two

1:41

gray hair

1:43

cashmere overcoat over his shoulders you

1:45

know just walking along and he came up

1:47

to me

1:48

with a perfect italian but perfect

1:51

english accent yeah wonderful and he was

1:54

the something like the professor of

1:57

antiquities at the

1:59

um

2:00

where was it torino university

2:03

right and he was just having a stroll

2:05

around and he said i wonder he said um i

2:08

want to try to the italian accent i

2:10

wonder if

2:11

would you like a nice cream

2:13

and that's what they do they have an ice

2:15

cream or they're in lake coma in their

2:18

parade round

2:20

in the evening

2:21

you know everyone even if you're you

2:23

know it doesn't you don't have to be an

2:25

academic or an aristocrat everyone does

2:27

that if you drive a bus you're going to

2:28

be doing that your best clothes they

2:30

seem to wear a lot of tweed as well

2:32

which is really odd i think they like i

2:34

think they like the english the

2:36

geography teachers

2:37

exactly exactly but now you go right

2:40

down south south like you go into a

2:42

village or you're a town like that

2:44

hey you have someone

2:46

come in here for some food is it good

2:49

it's good they they don't dress up it's

2:51

fine there's nothing in their homes

2:54

because they don't spend time in their

2:55

homes right because it's always sunny

2:57

outside

2:59

my opinion is that they're probably

3:01

really nice people

3:03

i'm at st andrews university and it's

3:05

quite international so

3:07

yeah i meet all sorts of people and

3:09

everyone's lovely okay so yeah some

3:11

italians uh

3:13

my best friends aren't italian but there

3:15

are battalions at my unit

3:18

they're not in my social circle but yeah

3:20

everyone's lovely there so and have you

3:22

been to italy before

3:23

uh yes i have i've been to rome and

3:26

venice okay and so

3:29

you've met italians i guess

3:31

yeah just generally very friendly

3:34

probably more friendly

3:36

sometimes

3:38

well of the italians that i have met

3:41

i do find them nice yeah yeah have you

3:45

both been to italy

3:46

i haven't been to italy i've been to

3:48

italy but i was like six or something so

3:50

i don't remember it very well

3:53

okay and where did you go venice okay

3:56

great and how about you what's your

3:57

opinion of

3:59

my opinion of italians is well i worked

4:02

for two families that are italian and

4:04

they live here in salt team so

4:06

yeah and they are very very family

4:08

orientated extremely so

4:11

so more so than us i would say i think

4:14

they have like really good food it's

4:16

quite a cool culture

4:17

i don't think they've got the

4:19

yobishness that we've got here i think

4:23

the

4:24

children are politer and nicer

4:27

okay yeah

4:29

so it's funny when you first asked the

4:31

question i immediately thought about

4:32

food because i love italian food and

4:36

i've had some really nice meals in italy

4:39

um

4:39

[Music]

4:40

i think that the way that they eat as

4:43

well it's a lot more relaxed

4:45

and kind of laid back than british

4:47

people often are a bit formal and

4:49

uptight when it comes to food i like the

4:51

relaxed approach to cooking i think they

4:54

also have more respect for their elders

4:56

yes oh yes that's another thing isn't it

4:59

yeah it seems to be a thing that people

5:01

have mentioned as well family is uh

5:04

very important and they cherish older

5:06

people don't they rather than

5:08

finding them an irritation

5:10

[Laughter]

6:12

before we came with our episode here's a

6:14

short snippet about what matteo thinks

6:16

about brits and what katie found out on

6:18

the streets

6:19

what do i think about the brits

6:22

where they are cold

6:24

snobs

6:25

alcoholics

6:27

joking my wife is british

6:31

someone says that

6:33

brits are like coconut and italians are

6:37

like peaches that's because

6:40

it's very easy to like be friends of

6:42

italians because italians are like

6:45

let's be friends

6:48

instead with british people it's very

6:50

difficult but once you manage to break

6:52

the art shell

6:54

it's

6:55

all friendship and

6:58

love that's kind of it and you drink

7:32

[Music]

7:39

[Music]

7:42

okay

7:44

and um have you been to italy before uh

7:46

i've been to venice

7:48

which i think is in italy so i'm very

7:50

confident about it

7:53

i see

7:54

and uh do you have plans to return to

7:56

italy after your experience in venice

7:58

absolutely it's beautiful definitely

8:01

perfect

8:02

i had the the the pleasure working with

8:05

a number of italians and spending visits

8:06

there i went to milan went to rome went

8:09

to like homework other times and they've

8:10

just absolutely the best hosts i loved

8:13

it but rome was just amazing i had the

8:15

the archetypal italian experience i was

8:17

sitting by the colosseum

8:19

having pasta and wine and next to me

8:21

there was a padre there in his uh no dog

8:24

collar as a vespa and a ferrari went

8:26

past so i i i took a picture of it just

8:28

to i mean it can't get more than that

8:30

that's your italian overdose right there

8:31

well that's like a sketch or something

8:33

yeah it's absolutely amazing wow okay

8:35

and would you say from your you've been

8:37

to a few places in italy then yes

8:38

and

8:41

this like archetype that you sort of

8:43

said fits to all the regions you've been

8:45

bits of it do and that's just i suppose

8:46

the caricature but the the fact you can

8:49

see um some things permeate all the way

8:50

through so the openness the willingness

8:52

to engage the uh the love of food and

8:56

love of wine everybody loves scuba i

8:57

think they've got it down to fine art

8:59

in italy it's much more accessible than

9:01

perhaps some fine cuisines it's just

9:03

lovely what do you think everyone in

9:05

england kind of or britain thinks of

9:06

italians they're like a cliche if you

9:08

know what i mean

9:09

of what we think of them

9:11

i think right now

9:13

some um british people might not like

9:15

the italians as much as they may have

9:17

used to a year ago or something as

9:20

the they lost the euro final to them so

9:23

i wasn't waiting for someone to say that

9:25

okay so you think maybe we're a little

9:28

bit sore yeah

9:30

and what's your opinion of italians i

9:32

like them even though they upset you

9:34

only a month ago

9:37

i i thought they deserved it firstly

9:39

is there like a resounding

9:42

maybe you've already sort of said it

9:43

with the kind of the pride or the kind

9:45

of the

9:46

yeah the the yeah maybe the pride and

9:48

the culture of want like a resounding

9:50

feature throughout all of it yeah i

9:51

would it's their enthusiasm enthusiasm

9:54

yeah especially when it comes to did we

9:56

mention cooking at all yeah especially

9:58

when we do that because and quite

10:00

frankly i am a little bit biased here

10:03

there are no greater

10:05

waiters

10:06

in the world than italians and how does

10:08

your opinion compare to

10:11

the kind of cliched general populate

10:13

populous opinion of italians in britain

10:16

hey i think that um we've always got a

10:19

real soft spot for italians because i

10:20

think much of so my first experience of

10:22

all things italians as a scotsman was

10:24

going to vazoki's ice cream and carrie

10:25

muir and seeing just this wonderful

10:27

wealth of flavors that you know your

10:29

home you wouldn't get and so that

10:30

italianness would come through and a lot

10:32

of people as we grew up and then you

10:34

take the chance to to travel and see it

10:37

in italy and it it's the same again but

10:40

a thousand fold more we have the same

10:41

channel but in italy asking the opposite

10:44

question

10:45

what do you think italians will say when

10:47

they ask questions what do they think of

10:48

brits i don't really know well i guess

10:51

i'd like to think it'll be good but

10:53

like

10:54

oh

10:55

i guess on the same sort of like

10:56

football

10:58

we're not very nice in football yeah i

11:00

think like the football fans aren't the

11:02

football fans haven't been that nice no

11:04

certainly right because of the brewing

11:05

and stuff oh yeah

11:07

so

11:08

so maybe they're getting the wrong

11:10

perception of them yeah we have a team

11:12

with easy italian that are making the

11:14

same counter questions british people

11:17

what are they thinking

11:20

i don't know i think they must

11:23

think because they seem to cherish their

11:26

heritage so much and we do have and

11:29

we're a very historical nation aren't we

11:32

our attitude to it is very different i

11:34

think to the italians but they may kind

11:36

of find that really fascinating thanks

11:39

for watching this week's episode let us

11:41

know in the comments below what you

11:42

think about italians any of us brits are

11:44

a bit like coconuts and we'll see you

11:46

next week bye

11:48

[Music]

12:00

have you ever tried making italian food

12:02

for her

12:03

no i don't want to be disrespectful

12:05

absolutely not
