I've said it before and I'll say it

0:01

again the number one reason that

0:04

students fail their Cambridge English

0:06

exam or probably any English exam for

0:08

that matter is lack of preparation now

0:12

that may be because the student is

0:14

overconfident you know they have a high

0:16

level and they think well I can

0:18

understand films in English I listen to

0:20

podcasts in English maybe they even

0:22

speak in English on a daily basis at

0:24

work or with their friends and they feel

0:26

that they don't need to prepare it may

0:28

be just a simple lack of time maybe they

0:31

live very busy lives with their families

0:32

and work and other commitments and they

0:35

can't find time to prepare for the exam

0:37

or maybe it's simply procrastination so

0:41

that's delaying or postponing something

0:43

that needs to be done so this is true of

0:46

the whole exam in general whether it's

0:48

the B2 first C1 Advanced or C2

0:50

proficiency but it's particularly true

0:53

of the writing paper now I've seen

0:55

hundreds of results papers from from

0:58

students who have taken the exam and I

1:00

would say that in around 880 or 90% of

1:03

those results papers it's the writing

1:06

score which is the lowest and I'm sure

1:09

that's because the students haven't

1:11

practiced the writing tasks in some

1:13

cases the first time they've ever

1:15

written an essay in English or report in

1:17

English or an article in English is on

1:20

the day of the exam and it's very

1:22

difficult to get a high score in the

1:24

writing paper if you've never practiced

1:26

because these are very tough tasks the

1:28

time is limited and you have to do a lot

1:31

and include a lot of grammar and

1:33

vocabulary in quite short texts and

1:36

sometimes it can mean the difference

1:37

between a pass and a fail or at least

1:40

the student just not getting the result

1:42

that they were really aiming for now

1:44

it's understandable really that a

1:46

student will avoid practicing the

1:48

writing tasks there's some kind of

1:51

psychological barrier to sitting down

1:53

with a blank page or a blank Word

1:55

document and just writing something

1:57

especially if you don't write regularly

1:59

in your own language right to to write

2:01

in a second language is much more

2:03

difficult but if the first time you ever

2:05

write an essay in English is on the day

2:07

of your exam you're going to be in

2:08

trouble so what is the solution well I

2:11

could simply say just do it right just

2:15

sit down and practice come on find time

2:17

and write an essay but that doesn't

2:19

really help does it so what I would like

2:21

to say to you today it's a little

2:23

challenge is just write one sentence

2:26

just write the first opening sentence of

2:29

whatever task you decide to do nobody

2:32

has to see it you don't have to send it

2:34

to a teacher for Corrections or feedback

2:37

your friends don't have to see it it's

2:38

just for you but just sit down and write

2:41

that first sentence I think you can do

2:43

that right it's not you don't need much

2:45

time you don't need much effort but it's

2:47

a start and then tomorrow you can write

2:50

the second sentence or maybe you'll

2:51

write two or three sentences tomorrow or

2:53

maybe a whole paragraph and the day

2:55

after a little bit more and a little bit

2:57

more the idea is that you build a habit

3:00

this technique has proven to work in

3:02

other areas of life like exercise if you

3:05

if you feel you should be doing exercise

3:07

but you don't want to go to the gym for

3:08

an hour or go for a 10 km run then just

3:11

do 5 minutes just anybody can do 5

3:14

minutes of exercise whatever that may be

3:16

and probably once you've started you'll

3:18

do more maybe you'll do 10 15 20 minutes

3:21

and it's the same with writing you write

3:24

that first sentence and once you've sat

3:26

down with the paper and you found a task

3:28

you'll probably think well now I'm here

3:30

I'll write a couple more sentences but

3:33

really it's getting over that barrier of

3:35

just doing it that Pro procrastination

3:37

so as I said that's my little challenge

3:39

for you if you're not practicing the

3:41

writing tasks now then start write

3:45

something it doesn't have to be

3:46

Shakespearean it doesn't have to be

3:48

perfect just write something and build

3:51

the habit of doing something regularly

3:53

and you'll be much more confident on the

3:54

day of the exam okay so are you going to

3:56

take up my challenge let me know in the

3:58

comments and I'll see you very soon for

4:00

another

video
