you only have one opportunity on any of

0:03

these routes your forearms are swelling

0:07

your fingertips are losing grip it's

0:09

incredibly High consequence if you slip

0:13

you have to push your body past its

0:16

limits to reach that

0:21

top meet Brian zarella wait Brian where

0:26

are

0:27

you ah there you are I'm a three-time

0:31

national champion I've also won two ifsc

0:34

gold medals at World Cup events um as

0:37

well as a couple silver bronze and a

0:39

silver and a bronze at the IC World

0:41

Championships events and he's competing

0:44

at the US national par climbing

0:47

championships but let's go back to the

0:49

start I knew I wanted to coach Brian

0:51

instantly a lot of times when working

0:53

with people who have an amputation or uh

0:57

a disability they climb a little more

0:59

slowly a little more controlled just

1:00

because you want to be really certain

1:02

that every move you do is going to be

1:05

stable but Brian had this amazing

1:08

ability to just throw himself at holds

1:11

uh in a way that might seem Reckless at

1:13

first but it's something that allows him

1:16

to do moves that other competitors

1:18

simply can't I saw that this kid has

1:20

something special I need to stop calling

1:22

him

1:24

kid Brian's climbing career didn't

1:26

surprise his mom either Brian this this

1:40

[Music]

1:43

so I was actually born with one hand um

1:45

and so this is kind of just how it been

1:47

all my

1:48

[Music]

1:53

[Music]

1:57

life Elementary School

2:07

[Music]

2:11

at the time I thought that's kind of

2:13

cool I got a straight A in gym class for

2:14

doing absolutely nothing and it wasn't

2:17

until I was a little older that I

2:18

understood the negative repercussions

2:20

that ended up happening on

2:28

me

2:35

I first got into sports around Middle

2:37

School there was an after school program

2:39

they had a bunch of free sports to try

2:41

whether it was baseball basketball

2:43

handball football you kind of name it

2:46

martial arts they had it and imagine

2:48

having a kid with built up energy for

2:52

like 10 11 plus years oh my God I was

2:56

just like rapid firing through different

2:59

um kind of different sports and just

3:01

trying a new sport basically every other

3:03

day felt like and then on Brian's 19th

3:06

birthday climbing entered the chat in

3:10

2017 I went to a gym down in New York

3:12

City and the rest is history yeah know I

3:16

was pretty bad when I first started

3:17

climbing oh I just could not figure out

3:21

how to get up the wall and I was super

3:23

scared at the heights at first but

3:24

there's something about the adrenaline

3:25

that kept just driving me to try it more

3:28

and then up getting a membership through

3:29

the rest of summer and that's basically

3:30

been it and I've been climbing ever

3:32

since I think if I tried to tally up the

3:33

amount of hours I put on a Climbing Gym

3:35

i' dve myself insane thinking about it

3:39

it sound a little bit

3:41

[Music]

3:44

obsessive I was pretty insecure about

3:47

how I would navigate this world with one

3:49

hand I always needed different adaptive

3:51

pieces and there was nowhere ever really

3:54

there to teach me what to do and I'm

3:56

finally lifting and I feel really

3:58

confident in the gym but but it

4:00

definitely took a long time to get there

4:02

it's very easy to have imposter syndrome

4:04

kind of take yourself down a notch in

4:06

your own head or still competing at the

4:09

highest level it might look a little

4:10

different from what everyone expects but

4:13

that doesn't change the fact that we're

4:15

still professional athletes at the end

4:16

of the

4:17

day whether you're a novice or a world

4:20

champion it's a Relentless sport

4:23

climbing is incredibly mental incredibly

4:26

physical and Incredibly Technical and

4:29

it's all those three things at the same

4:30

time most of the time well I've seen

4:32

like strongest men in the world come

4:34

into a climbing gym and struggle because

4:36

they don't know what they're doing if

4:37

you can't do all three of those things

4:39

you're not going to make it as a highle

4:41

climber and messing up is high

4:43

Consequence the potential of falling off

4:47

of a 60 to 1,000 ft Cliff is pretty

4:51

obvious you can tear muscles you can

4:53

tear up your skin it can just beat up

4:55

your body so I've personally broken

4:58

bones doing it but I think one of the

5:00

things that makes climbing unique is

5:02

that it's also a slow sport where you

5:05

actually have time every time you make a

5:07

move and so you have to weigh choices

5:08

constantly because consequence is high

5:11

how are you going to manage that and

5:13

scoring is simple each hold is numbered

5:15

so the higher you climb the higher you

5:19

[Music]

5:28

score

5:31

as you go higher and higher each move is

5:33

harder till the last move of the climb

5:35

which a lot of times in competitions is

5:37

going to be after 45 50 ft of climbing

5:40

you're going to have to just throw and

5:42

catch and jump and swing to it at the

5:44

top of the wall whoever's the strongest

5:47

whoever's the best whoever is most

5:49

composed is going to be the one on

5:58

top

6:00

and in first place taking home the gold

6:02

winning the championship men's A2

6:04

category it's Brian

6:11

Z if you have any level of impostor

6:13

syndrome it goes away when you're on the

6:23

podium I think climbing is always

6:25

pushing me to my limits before climbing

6:28

I wouldn't say I was was anywhere near

6:30

as confident in myself um or in my

6:33

abilities I think it's really easy for

6:36

kids with disabilities to grow up a

6:37

little bit more shy a little bit more

6:39

reserved but what they can do it's kind

6:42

of pushed me out of my comfort zone

6:43

ultimately I'm climbing for myself but

6:47

not the me from the present I'm climbing

6:49

for the younger me from the past and

6:52

that little kid who grew up and always

6:53

wanted to do

6:58
