this is Gary mcke this is West Cumbria
0:04
where Gary went on his daily
0:07
run he'd usually go past these sheep
0:11
past his primary
0:14
school and past bill who would Brew him
0:17
a cup of tea then he'd run back home
0:19
before work seems pretty idic right
0:23
until you realize Gary's morning run is
0:25
a marathon that's 26.2 mil a every
0:30
single
0:39
[Music]
0:42
day I'm Gary mcke and in 2022 around 365
0:47
marathons in 365 days the story probably
0:50
starts on the 23rd of June 1997 when I
0:53
came home from work and when I went in
0:55
the house my dad was sitting there in
0:57
his usual chair and he had tears in his
0:59
eyes he told me that he had cancer he
1:01
passed away 6 years later of under
1:03
illness and in his memory I wanted to do
1:05
something to celebrate his life so I
1:07
became a fundrais for McMillan cancer
1:09
support knowing that the Charities were
1:10
going into people's houses and telling
1:13
them the same devastating years that
1:14
we've been told Gary raised money by
1:17
doing long-distance running but he
1:19
wanted to take his challenges to the
1:20
next level it all just happened really
1:22
quick we were sat in the kitchen I was
1:24
painting his face and he just he just
1:27
came out with it we were all shocked
1:30
I'm sure there are other people who have
1:32
done something similar in terms of
1:34
marathons but not while holding down a
1:37
full-time job to do it whilst running a
1:39
a family a busy family life and still
1:41
supporting other people along the way
1:43
there actually aren't any
1:45
words Gary ran around 10,000 miles over
1:49
the year that's the distance between
1:51
Rome and
1:52
Sydney he spent 30 hours running every
1:55
week in one of the hilliest parts of
1:57
England climbing the equivalent of 11.7
2:01
Mount Everest over the year if I was
2:03
going to work I'd be up at 5:00 in the
2:05
morning the only things I wouldn't know
2:08
would be my shoes I'd never wore the
2:09
same pair of shoes on consecutive days
2:12
and then I would normally do
2:13
motivational video for the deer good
2:15
morning on day 289 10° outside cloudy
2:19
and
2:20
windy word caught on quickly once people
2:23
started to realize this madman was
2:25
actually running 26 miles every single
2:28
day they began to join him to support
2:30
the cause people were coming previously
2:33
couch to 5 care 5K to 10 care 10 care to
2:36
half marathon pushing themselves to do
2:38
the full Marathon work colleague Chris
2:40
ran 92 marathons alongside Gary over the
2:43
year Gary's challenge gave me a purpose
2:46
at the time that I needed it most
2:48
sometimes I don't really know the best
2:49
way to help myself but I always know
2:50
that trying to help others is the best
2:52
way to start I don't think any of us
2:54
would have went I'm going to run even in
2:56
excess of 10 marathons in a
2:58
year it was December 31st
3:01
2022 the 365th marathon Gary's final day
3:06
was a Monumental occasion a 50 strong
3:09
band of Runners joined Gary on a Victory
3:12
lap the town was alive with
3:16
energy the final day I mean what an
3:19
event that was the procession that
3:22
followed Gary through Cur absolutely
3:25
incredible just before we finished I
3:27
pulled everybody together and I thanked
3:29
them and I said to them no matter how
3:31
many miles you run in your life you'll
3:32
always remember this last
3:35
one the roads are lined with people his
3:38
fireworks going off and there was over a
3:40
th people the club waiting for me coming
3:41
in and just chocolate
3:43
block at 7:20 p.m. Gary had reached his
3:47
fundraising goal the Manel as of now has
3:51
raised 1 million for m h at
3:55
[Music]
3:58
home
4:01
what you've got to remember is I hadn't
4:03
had a bay for over a year so being the
4:04
extreme person I am I tried to do a 26.2
4:10
[Music]
4:16
bers I think if people understood what
4:19
their actual limits were and what the
4:20
boundaries were they would say that they
4:22
could push themselves a lot further than
4:23
the believe I think it's getting
4:24
comfortable being uncomfortable
4:26
sometimes and just working towards the
4:28
light because however dark it is is you
4:30
can always find the light if you dig
4:31
deep
4:34
[Music]
4:46
enough
