S C R A BB L E Scrabble. The famous

0:08

board game that forces you to be both a

0:10

spelling bee and a math wiz. And though

0:13

you've tried to hit that triple word a

0:15

few times, luck hasn't always been on

0:18

your side. But Scrabble isn't all about

0:20

the letters you're dealt. to turn you

0:22

into a scrabble winner who remind you of

0:24

its basic rules, delve into its past,

0:27

including the vacation that changed

0:29

everything, and bring in a world

0:31

champion and his tips. Keeping a poker

0:34

face is very, very invaluable in

0:37

Scrabble.

0:47

One bag, 100 letters, four racks, and

0:51

one memorable board. The green, red,

0:54

blue, and yellow probably brings back

0:56

some childhood memories. Wherever you

0:58

are in the world, you have probably

1:00

played

1:01

Scrabble. It exists in 28 languages, and

1:04

more than 165 million sets have been

1:07

sold.

1:08

Whilst for some it's a regular fixture

1:10

in family life, for others they may be

1:13

gathering dust on a shelf, unloved for

1:15

years. So, let's remind you of a few key

1:19

rules. Each player gets seven letters.

1:23

There are 98 letter tiles and two

1:25

magical blank tiles. Those can be turned

1:28

into any

1:30

letter. You cannot play diagonally, as

1:33

much as that would be enticing

1:35

sometimes. The red, blue, and yellow

1:38

squares can boost your score. We

1:40

especially like triple word. The same

1:43

word can be played more than once, and

1:46

you can challenge an opponent's word

1:48

given that all players have agreed on a

1:50

reference dictionary at the beginning of

1:51

the game. You can't of course speak at

1:54

this while

1:55

playing. But who had the brilliant idea

1:58

to get a soul competitive about word

2:00

making?

2:03

[Music]

2:05

It was the Great Depression in the

2:07

United States of America and Alfred here

2:10

was unemployed. Sounds like a familiar

2:13

story, doesn't it? A bit like Monopoly.

2:16

Anyways, unable to resume his

2:18

architecture career, Alfred delved into

2:20

the board game world to create something

2:22

that could merge numbers and letters.

2:24

But this was not without a

2:26

future. First up was Lexico. Initially

2:29

named it, Lexico was a simple word game

2:32

that requires you to collect nine random

2:34

letters and create words from it. Alfred

2:37

chose the amount of letter tiles in

2:39

their point system by analyzing none

2:41

other than the frequency of letters in

2:43

the front pages of several

2:45

newspapers. Sadly, no major success came

2:48

from this. In 1938, Alfred continued

2:52

crafting his game and decided to

2:54

decrease the number of collected letters

2:55

to seven and add a 15 by 15 squares

2:58

board with several bonus spots. Looking

3:02

more familiar now, no the name of

3:05

choice, crisscross words. But sadly for

3:08

Alfred, still no

3:10

success. Usually it's third time lucky,

3:13

but Alfred still needed a bit of help.

3:16

Enter James Bruno.

3:19

He loved crisscross words and thought

3:21

that with some tweaks it could be a huge

3:24

success. So he got to work. Among his

3:27

changes were a new board color scheme, a

3:31

new 50point bonus rule for using all

3:33

seven tiles and most importantly the new

3:37

iconic name scrabble which means to

3:41

scratch or dig frantically with the

3:44

hands. Sounds about right. James meant

3:47

business. He also bought the

3:49

manufacturing rights from Alfred and

3:51

agreed to give him a royalty for every

3:53

set sold. He copyrighted and trademarked

3:56

Scrabble in December 1948 and then went

3:59

to make the game sets with his family

4:00

out of their

4:01

home. But what about that vacation that

4:05

changed everything?

4:06

Well, legend has it that in 1952, Jack

4:10

Strauss, the then director at the

4:12

renowned Macy's department store, played

4:14

Scrabble while on vacation, and he loved

4:19

it. That prompted him to do a large

4:21

order, and within a year, it was one of

4:24

the most coveted board games. Scrabble

4:27

was a huge success. But Alfred didn't

4:30

want to stop there. He went on to create

4:32

another board game, Alfred's Other Game.

4:36

The board game didn't take off, but

4:38

Alfred couldn't rest easy knowing that

4:40

his hard work had created a worldwide

4:42

sensation. Associations, clubs, and

4:45

tournaments took off. There was even a

4:47

game show in the 80s and '9s. The new

4:50

century saw Scrabble take the internet

4:52

lead, and the worldwide takeover

4:54

continued until today, touching every

4:56

corner of the globe.

5:00

I was born and raised in Nigeria. The

5:03

first time I played Scrabble was when my

5:08

elder brother, he brought it home. I was

5:10

like 14,

5:12

15. Back then I was a fan of such board

5:16

games like Monopoly, chess and all that

5:20

and I got naturally drawn to it.

5:25

I played my first official tournament

5:28

scrabble in 2002 and uh it was in 2015

5:33

that the efforts paid off. I won my

5:36

first world championship. It was it was

5:38

a very very very very euphoric moment.

5:41

It's beyond it's beyond explaining. It

5:43

was special that I won because I was the

5:45

first African to even get to the final.

5:48

You know, everybody wanted let it be

5:51

something that is possible to do this

5:54

irrespective of your race, irrespective

5:57

of your uh beginnings, irresective of

5:59

where you come from and all of that. And

6:02

now, no more waiting. Here are

6:05

Wellington's tips that will turn you

6:06

into a Scrabble wiz.

6:10

Once you think in terms of prefixes and

6:13

suffixes, it makes it easy for you to

6:16

now arrange the other tiles before the

6:20

suffix to form a valid word. Something

6:27

like remaking. You are use utilizing

6:31

both a

6:32

suffix and a prefix.

6:37

What you want to do is to be able to

6:40

extend an existing word to get to the

6:44

premium squares. You can add an E R to

6:48

this to form

6:49

speaker. And of course, you can also add

6:52

an S so that it gets to this

6:56

spot.

6:58

Remember in Scrabble the practice is to

7:02

always lift the bag above your eye level

7:04

so that you won't be accused of

7:08

cheating. The Q is the heaviest tile on

7:11

this rack. And the heavier a tile is,

7:14

the more difficult it is to form

7:17

acceptable words. And one very good way

7:20

of eliminating the Q is a word like Qi.

7:25

forming ch and

7:30

I there is a very hot spot on this board

7:33

which

7:34

is this spot here the triple word score

7:38

we can't really make the best of that

7:41

score at that moment so we have to do

7:43

something about it and that is what we

7:45

call

7:50

blocking so if you notice we we scored

7:53

little But with the little that we

7:56

scored, we were able to prevent our

7:58

opponent from having access to this very

8:03

juicy

8:06

square. Keeping a poker face is very,

8:09

very invaluable in Scrabble. Some people

8:12

make the mistake of making it easy for

8:17

your opponent to guess the kind of tiles

8:19

you have just by looking at your face.

8:22

So, in Scrabble, you want to be able to

8:25

keep a bland face, an unreadable

8:30

face. Okay, get your board, tiles,

8:33

rocks, and some players because you are

8:35

definitely ready to scrappble.
