the speaking papers of the cambridge
0:04
english exams are unfair
0:08
hello my name is ben this is to the
0:10
point english thank you for joining me
0:12
again and welcome to any new viewers
0:14
yes i believe that the speaking papers
0:16
of the cambridge english exams are
0:18
unfair
0:19
in fact the speaking papers of all
0:21
english exams are probably unfair but in
0:23
this channel i focus on the b2 first c1
0:26
advanced and c2 proficiency cambridge
0:29
english exams
0:30
and the speaking papers of all of those
0:32
exams contain a task which the
0:35
candidates must do
0:37
in a limited period of time
0:39
and that period of time is often very
0:42
short
0:43
for example in the c1 advanced there is
0:45
a part where the candidates must speak
0:47
about
0:48
two photographs they must compare the
0:50
photographs and answer two questions in
0:53
just one minute
0:54
and similarly in the c2 proficiency the
0:57
long term the long term
1:00
is just two minutes so the students need
1:02
to
1:03
demonstrate their fluency their high
1:05
level all the vocabulary
1:07
in just two minutes
1:09
so this format clearly benefits people
1:12
who can formulate their thoughts and
1:15
speak quickly
1:16
now there's a big percentage of the
1:18
population around 25 to 40 percent
1:22
who
1:23
belong to a personality type which find
1:27
this difficult to do
1:28
and i myself am a member of this
1:31
personality type um it's introverts
1:34
yes i am an introvert and you may be
1:37
thinking well if you have a youtube
1:39
channel and you make videos which have
1:41
thousands of views and potentially
1:43
millions of views um that doesn't sound
1:46
much like an introvert
1:47
but if you think about it
1:49
everything i do i do alone
1:52
i plan record edit
1:55
promote at this moment i'm speaking to a
1:57
camera alone in a room
1:59
and i like it that way i don't like
2:02
working in a group so much
2:04
but more significantly i can
2:06
prepare what i'm going to say
2:09
so always before i make these videos i
2:11
make some notes and prepare what i'm
2:14
going to say before i start recording
2:17
and that
2:18
really helps with an introvert if we
2:20
have time to analyze and prepare what
2:22
we're going to say
2:24
so that's one of the most important
2:25
characteristics of an introvert when
2:27
we're talking about the speaking paper
2:29
of the cambridge english exams
2:31
but let's look at some other
2:32
characteristics that introverts share
2:36
so introverts are reserved reflective
2:38
and introspective
2:40
so their energy expands through
2:42
reflection and diminishes through
2:45
interaction so basically they take
2:47
pleasure in solitary activities and feel
2:50
uncomfortable in groups
2:52
but
2:54
most importantly when talking about the
2:56
the speaking paper of the cambridge
2:57
english exam introverts are more
3:00
analytical before speaking they are
3:02
eloquent and thoughtful
3:04
and make great public speakers
3:06
when they have time to gather their
3:08
thoughts
3:09
and that is the essence of what i'm
3:11
getting at here when they have time to
3:13
gather their thoughts and of course when
3:15
you have to do a task which has a time
3:17
limit of one minute you don't have time
3:19
to gather your thoughts and to be
3:21
analytical
3:23
in 60 seconds if you spend five seconds
3:25
gathering your thoughts just five
3:27
seconds that's almost ten percent of the
3:29
time you have so as i said the speaking
3:32
paper of the cambridge english exams is
3:34
unfair
3:35
but all is not lost i have some good
3:38
news for introverts because i believe
3:40
that
3:40
introverts have a superpower so to speak
3:44
now the speaking paper of the cambridge
3:46
english exams is
3:48
unnatural uncomfortable and awkward for
3:51
everybody extroverts and introverts
3:54
alike
3:55
but
3:56
introverts have been preparing for this
3:59
all our lives really right
4:01
we always feel uncomfortable in these
4:03
types of situations every time we have
4:05
an interaction
4:07
with with a stranger with somebody we
4:09
don't know very well we feel
4:11
uncomfortable so really we've been
4:12
practicing um for this moment all our
4:15
lives so that's a huge advantage
4:18
extroverts perhaps don't have the skills
4:20
to deal with this
4:21
awkward uncomfortable unnatural
4:24
situation
4:25
in fact there was a study done on how
4:27
different personality types performed in
4:29
the ielts cambridge exam and that had
4:32
some interesting results
4:33
the interesting result is that it was
4:35
kind of inconclusive and that's because
4:37
they found that extroverts were more
4:40
fluent
4:41
while introverts were more proficient
4:43
now i suspect that's because of what i
4:46
just said that the
4:48
introverts have to make more of an
4:49
effort
4:50
so technically
4:52
they speak better in the exams maybe
4:54
they make less mistakes they use better
4:56
vocabulary better grammatical structures
4:59
because they know they have to
5:02
maybe subconsciously make more of an
5:03
effort
5:04
whereas extroverts just are more natural
5:07
at speaking so they speak very fluently
5:09
which is very important and very good
5:11
but perhaps they make more mistakes
5:13
because they don't make such a big
5:14
effort so you can see that there are
5:16
some advantages that introverts have but
5:18
it's still a more difficult exercise
5:20
than it is for extroverts but i'm going
5:23
to give you three things that introverts
5:25
can do to
5:26
make it make this part of the exam
5:28
easier and get the highest score
5:30
possible
5:31
so number one is to prepare as much as
5:34
you can
5:35
so that relates to practicing the more
5:38
you practice the easier easier it gets
5:40
the quicker you find an answer to
5:42
whatever the question is of course you
5:44
can't prepare for the questions because
5:46
you don't know what the questions are
5:47
going to be
5:49
but you can prepare your reaction time
5:51
you just get better with practice i
5:52
promise i've noticed it in my students
5:55
the more they practice the quicker it
5:57
gets
5:58
also you prepare
6:00
what you can in that
6:01
the vocabulary you can use um in certain
6:04
parts of the exam like the the picture
6:07
comparison you can always start with the
6:09
same expression
6:10
you can use certain vocabulary whatever
6:13
the pictures are
6:14
the more vocabulary you have the more
6:16
structure you have the easier it will be
6:18
on the day of the exam
6:20
so prepare as much as you can before the
6:22
exam also it's okay to take a few
6:25
seconds before you speak in the exam the
6:27
examiners are humans they know that you
6:30
are human too we're not all robots in
6:32
this situation so although your time is
6:34
limited
6:36
you don't exactly lose points
6:39
for silence but you're not gaining
6:41
points either
6:43
so if you need to spend five six seven
6:45
seconds before you start speaking just
6:48
formulating what you're going to say
6:50
that's okay
6:52
as long as you answer the questions as
6:54
long as you do the task
6:56
obviously you'll have less time because
6:57
you've lost those first first few
7:00
seconds but you haven't wasted those
7:02
first few seconds because you're
7:03
formulating your ideas and what you're
7:05
going to say so
7:07
take a deep breath
7:09
if the silence makes you feel
7:10
uncomfortable then
7:12
use a filler expression like
7:14
that's a good question or let me think
7:17
about that one just so it's no not
7:19
complete silence but it's okay to take a
7:22
few seconds to think but remember you
7:24
need to use the rest of the time to
7:26
really take advantage and
7:28
show to the examiner your level um
7:30
really demonstrate because it's an
7:32
opportunity remember and finally number
7:34
three always remember it's not so
7:36
important what you say
7:38
but how you say it so if you don't have
7:41
time to really formulate what you're
7:42
going to say and in the middle of your
7:46
of the task you start to think oh my god
7:48
i'm saying something completely
7:49
ridiculous this isn't what i really
7:51
believe this isn't true
7:53
it doesn't really matter if it's not
7:55
what you believe or if it's true just
7:57
you have to speak you have to take
7:59
advantage of the opportunity you have to
8:01
demonstrate your level
8:03
so are you an introvert or an extrovert
8:06
or what personality type are you let me
8:08
know in the comments and you can help
8:09
