Hi everybody, welcome to a new episode

0:02

of Easy English. So this time we're

0:05

going to head to the streets of Brighton

0:06

and make conversations about work. We're

0:09

going to find out what the people of

0:10

Brighton do for a [music] job, find out

0:12

the pros and cons, and what any advice

0:14

they would have for any aspiring people

0:17

looking to get into their line of work.

0:22

>> [music]

0:25

>> Hi.

0:26

>> Hi.

0:26

>> [laughter]

0:27

>> How's it going today?

0:28

>> Good, thank you.

0:29

>> Oh, all right, yeah, you?

0:31

>> Yeah, pretty good. I'm happy to be out

0:32

filming on a nice day. How's it going?

0:35

>> All good.

0:35

>> Nice. And what are you up to today?

0:37

>> Just on a walk during my lunch break.

0:39

>> I'm here on tour. I'm a tour managing

0:42

for a musician named Sean Rowe.

0:44

>> Today we're doing some stuff for work.

0:45

So my partner here, we're we're doing

0:47

stuff for couplets in the bunker, so

0:49

it's a recent show that we're doing.

0:50

>> Ah.

0:50

>> And so we're going around and we put

0:52

stickers everywhere.

0:54

Just to get it out there, get a bit of

0:55

advertising for them. For the fringe.

0:56

>> And for the fringe?

0:57

>> Are you guys studying? Are you working?

0:59

>> Yeah, we're both studying.

1:00

>> Yeah, both different universities, but

1:02

same topic.

1:03

>> But in both in Brighton?

1:04

>> Yes.

1:04

>> Nice, okay. And what what have you been

1:05

studying?

1:06

>> Film.

1:07

>> Film. Films.

1:08

>> Yeah, we're on holiday this week, but we

1:10

just we live here. We're just

1:11

staycation.

1:12

>> Staycation, that's always a good option.

1:14

And

1:14

what do you what would you usually be

1:16

doing on a day like today?

1:18

>> Uh working, I guess.

1:19

>> [laughter]

1:20

>> And where do you where do you work at

1:21

the moment?

1:21

>> I work at the University of Sussex.

1:24

>> Ah, right, interesting. As what what

1:26

job?

1:26

>> Uh in international student recruitment.

1:29

>> Um I'm a solicitor. I work in private

1:32

client work, wills, trusts, and

1:33

probates.

1:34

>> That's right, yeah?

1:35

>> Yeah.

1:36

>> And you?

1:36

>> Um I'm a trainee solicitor, so I'm

1:39

training in privacy,

1:42

risk and compliance law.

1:43

>> We're just on our days off.

1:45

>> Yeah, days off, yeah.

1:47

>> What do you both usually do?

1:48

>> Well, we're both

1:50

um

1:51

uh musicians, but we've also got our day

1:53

jobs. I do housekeeping.

1:55

>> And I work at Asda.

1:58

I work in retail.

1:59

>> But aspiring musician. Aspiring

2:00

musician.

2:01

>> I'm a barista. So I just did cafes and

2:03

everything like that.

2:03

>> Nice. For like a big brand or a little

2:06

>> a little little little tiny brand in the

2:09

middle of nowhere.

2:10

>> Is that how you like it?

2:11

>> Yeah, it's it's good and bad. But I'm

2:13

going to university so it's my job

2:15

before then.

2:15

>> You are both work colleagues?

2:17

>> Yes.

2:17

>> Okay, and where where do you work?

2:19

>> Morton Cran Case List is.

2:21

>> It's a law firm.

2:21

>> A law firm. Okay, are you lawyers?

2:24

>> Yes, we are.

2:24

>> I tour manage, yeah. So yeah, so I take

2:27

care of the logistics for the tour and

2:29

make sure, you know, we're not sleeping

2:31

outside and getting getting to places on

2:34

time and things like that.

2:35

>> So this is a

2:36

>> No, [laughter] I'm a commercial manager

2:39

for strategic accounts for a large

2:41

global company.

2:44

We sell construction and mining

2:45

equipment.

2:46

>> Wow, okay, interesting. And yourself?

2:48

>> I'm a commercial photography

2:51

photographer. I shoot primarily [music]

2:53

food and drink

2:55

for food and drink brands.

2:57

>> Oh, are you like adding putting makeup

2:59

on tomatoes and stuff?

3:00

>> No, that's awful. We keep everything

3:02

natural.

3:03

>> You could eat it.

3:03

>> Uh so mostly because we want to eat it

3:06

after we shoot it.

3:07

>> [laughter]

3:09

>> Yeah, this primarily there.

3:10

>> Shoot it quick so we can eat.

3:14

>> [music]

3:17

3:51

the episode.

3:53

>> [music]

3:56

>> How are you enjoying your job today?

3:58

>> Uh today, I'm loving it. I I'm I feel

4:00

like [laughter] a just a little

4:02

just going around like a little dog, you

4:03

know? I'm I'm happy. I love it, you

4:04

know? Any anything I can do to help my

4:06

partner here and help the company, I

4:07

love it. So, and I love the arts. So,

4:09

anything to support the arts, I'm here

4:11

for it.

4:12

>> Good on you. Good on you. What are you

4:14

hoping to get on to do after you finish

4:16

studying?

4:17

But maybe specifically.

4:19

>> I want to do camera work.

4:20

>> Okay, nice.

4:21

>> Definitely work with cameras and

4:22

technical things.

4:23

>> Okay. And how about yourself?

4:25

>> Uh I'm really interested in like

4:26

documentary making.

4:27

>> What are you going to study to

4:29

>> Uh digital marketing. So, it's going to

4:31

be

4:31

>> [laughter]

4:32

>> very exciting. I'm very excited to do

4:33

it.

4:34

>> And would you like to work for like a

4:35

certain company when you graduate?

4:37

>> Mm not at the moment, but there's quite

4:39

a few options I'd like to maybe pursue,

4:41

but I'm just doing marketing at the

4:43

moment to see what I want to do in the

4:45

future.

4:45

>> What do you both play?

4:47

>> Uh we're both guitarists, actually.

4:48

>> Guitarists and vocals.

4:50

>> In the same band?

4:50

>> Yes.

4:51

>> Yes. What's your band called?

4:53

>> Uh we we haven't decided yet, actually.

4:54

>> No, no. Really early days, actually. We

4:56

we both had a few projects that kind of

4:58

fell apart and we're like, might as well

5:00

do something together, you know?

5:01

>> That's great, yeah. And and what kind of

5:03

style

5:04

or do you not know that that either?

5:06

We've got

5:07

>> alternative punky

5:08

>> There's a bit of indie.

5:09

>> Bit bit of indie.

5:10

>> Bit of like emo because I mean, look at

5:12

me.

5:13

>> We we're just those pretentious

5:14

musicians. We do our own thing, man. We

5:15

do our own We do our own thing.

5:17

>> Yeah, yeah. Is this the Aussie band

5:19

going to smoke?

5:20

>> Oh, the chats, yeah.

5:21

>> Yeah, I know this band, yeah. Yeah,

5:22

they're [laughter] brilliant. Something

5:23

like that, maybe?

5:24

>> Yeah. In parts, to be fair, yeah. In

5:26

parts, yeah.

5:27

>> As a trainee solicitor that's right.

5:31

What are like the pros and cons of this

5:33

job and this study?

5:36

>> Ooh, good question. That's a really good

5:37

question. Not one that I get asked often

5:39

enough

5:40

or often at all.

5:41

>> [laughter]

5:43

>> I guess the pros would be

5:47

you get the satisfaction of doing

5:48

something for someone

5:50

helping someone through a really tough

5:51

time

5:52

and helping someone with a problem.

5:54

>> Pros I get to be in Brighton you know

5:57

and like [laughter] have 2 hours or like

5:59

an hour and a half to walk around

6:00

Brighton

6:02

and you know a lot of different places

6:03

it usually get a little walk around the

6:05

venue.

6:07

It's a nice community to be in I like I

6:09

like to support it and and facilitate.

6:12

You know just keeping it going.

6:14

>> It's lovely doing lots of different jobs

6:16

and sort of connecting with lots of

6:17

people across the world.

6:18

>> Yeah that must be nice to meet.

6:21

New faces every time what are some cons

6:23

to the job?

6:24

>> Oh man

6:26

it's tiring it's long hours.

6:28

>> Yeah.

6:30

>> Yeah if you can't work out the hourly

6:32

wage because it doesn't make sense.

6:35

But you know it's a great thing to do

6:37

with my time so.

6:39

>> Yeah yeah.

6:39

>> I love doing it with I love doing it

6:41

with my time.

6:41

>> I quite like the variety of the work I

6:44

do so every day is kind of a different

6:46

day so it keeps keeps the brain sharp I

6:49

think it keeps things interesting.

6:50

>> Yeah.

6:51

>> But obviously then the other side of

6:53

that is very long hours so it's

6:56

not always a 9-5 and it can be

6:59

stressful.

6:59

>> Stressful long hours?

7:01

>> Yeah it can be long hours sometimes the

7:03

clients are upset so it makes things

7:06

difficult for us to manage their

7:07

emotions.

7:10

>> So quite demanding job is it?

7:12

>> Yeah.

7:12

>> Absolutely.

7:13

>> Cons they can get really busy.

7:15

>> I bet right oh yeah right you probably

7:17

have like really busy periods and really

7:20

not busy periods.

7:22

And what what are the are the pros and

7:24

cons of studying film?

7:26

>> I guess the uncertainty of it it's quite

7:28

a hard thing to get into after

7:30

university but.

7:31

>> Right.

7:32

>> It's all about who you meet at while

7:33

we're here so.

7:35

>> That's a good point.

7:36

>> So fun.

7:37

>> It's very fun.

7:37

>> Creative.

7:38

>> Do you have any advice for people who

7:40

are also to study marketing.

7:43

>> Um just pursue what you want to do and

7:46

maybe there's all different routes in

7:47

marketing, so you can pursue any type of

7:49

job you want.

7:50

>> Go to gigs and have fun with it. Have

7:52

fun with it as well. Just go to gigs,

7:54

meet people. You never know who you

7:55

meet.

7:55

>> Just like make as many films as

7:57

possible. Just do it.

7:59

>> It doesn't matter if it's good or bad.

8:00

Just create and then you'll get better.

8:02

It's a learning curve.

8:03

>> I think just get after it.

8:05

Um you know, get get to get to um yeah,

8:09

just be involved in your community.

8:11

>> Get as much experience as you can.

8:13

>> Okay.

8:13

>> Um just in terms of

8:16

different kind of areas of law,

8:18

different law firms, and do a bit of

8:20

research about what you'd like um to

8:22

make sure that

8:24

you are in it for the long run because

8:27

it's a emotionally difficult job um and

8:30

long hours, and so you need to be

8:31

passionate about it to want to do it.

8:33

>> Ah.

8:34

>> Yeah, it's not it's not all suits.

8:36

>> [laughter]

8:37

>> Yeah, nice to say that. Oh, thank you

8:38

very much. Nice to meet you, too.

8:39

>> Pleasure. Lovely to meet you, too.

8:40

>> Thank you.

8:40

>> Take care.

8:41

>> Nice to meet you.

8:41

>> Yeah, you too. Take it easy.

8:43

Thanks so much.

8:43

>> Nice to meet you.

8:44

>> Yeah, nice to meet you.

8:45

>> Cheers. Thank you.

8:45

>> It was really nice to meet you. Have a

8:47

nice rest of your day.

8:48

>> Thank you.

8:48

>> It was nice to meet you.

8:49

>> Hey, nice to meet you, too. Yeah, it's

8:51

cool you're doing this.

8:52

>> So, good luck with that. Nice to meet

8:54

you.

8:54

>> Nice to meet you, too.

8:55

>> It was really nice to meet all four of

8:56

you. Enjoy your time on your staycation

8:58

and visiting.

8:59

>> Thank you so much.

9:00

>> Thank you so much.

9:01

>> See you later.

9:02

It was nice to meet you, too.

9:03

>> Yeah, nice to meet you, too.

9:05

>> Thanks for watching [music] this week's

9:06

episode. Let us know in the comments

9:08

below as a challenge what you do for

9:11

work [music] and the pros and cons of

9:13

your line of work. And as always, we'll

9:14

see you next time. Ta-ra.
