0:26
Hi, Georgie. How are you?
0:27
I'm great, thank you, Neil. I just had a delicious lunch.
0:31
Oh, nice. What did you eat for lunch?
0:34
I had pasta. What did you eat?
0:37
I had a chicken sandwich.
0:39
Mmm. Well, today's episode is all about restaurants and food.
0:46
Great. I love it when we talk about food.
0:49
Me too.
0:51
Neil, do you go to restaurants often?
0:54
Not that often. Maybe when I meet some friends.
1:00
How about you? Do you go to restaurants often?
1:04
No, I don't go often. Probably once a month.
1:07
OK, and when you go to a restaurant, what's your favourite part of eating there?
1:14
I like to be around lots of people.
1:20
I really love it when a restaurant has a good atmosphere.
1:25
I love spending time with friends.
1:27
What about you? Why do you like eating in a restaurant?
1:30
Well, I like to go to a restaurant that serves food that I don't know how to cook.
1:38
Yep, that's a good point.
1:41
So, restaurants with food from countries that I don’t know very well
1:46
or that are very different types of food to the food I make.
1:51
It’s really nice to eat out and that means to eat not at your home
1:57
because you don't have to make the food and you don't have to wash up.
2:01
That's true, yes.
2:02
It’s also nice to eat out for a special occasion. So, like a birthday or a celebration.
2:10
Yes and another special occasion could be something like Christmas and we at
2:16
BBC Learning English are eating out for that special occasion.
2:21
We're having a celebration, aren't we?
2:23
Yes, every year we have a Christmas party and we usually eat out in a restaurant.
2:29
So, Neil, you said you like eating out in lots of different types of
2:34
restaurants. What do you usually order?
2:37
Well, I really like spicy food like Indian curries and I like fish. So I like to get fish curry.
2:45
Mmm that sounds delicious! And we have a special way of ordering don't we?
2:50
What are some phrases we can use to order things in restaurants?
2:54
Yeah, so we can say: 'I'll have the fish curry.'
3:00
'I'll have the fish curry, please.'
3:02
Yes, and you can also say, 'Can I have the fish curry, please?', as well.
3:08
OK, Georgie, what do you usually order in a restaurant?
3:13
I also usually get the fish. Or a risotto.
3:19
OK, so let's say we are in a restaurant now. I'm
3:23
the waiter. I say to you: 'Are you ready to order?'
3:28
'Yes, I am.'
3:30
'And what would you like?'
3:31
'Can I get the risotto, please?'
3:34
'Yes, of course.'
3:35
So we can also say, 'Can I get the risotto?',
3:39
as well as can I have the risotto. And notice that we say 'the risotto', not a risotto.
3:46
That's right.
3:53
Let's recap the language we learned during the conversation.
3:58
We had 'eat out' which means 'eat a meal at a restaurant rather than at home'.
4:04
'Special occasion' – 'a birthday, anniversary, or other reason to celebrate'.
4:09
And we learned that when we order in a restaurant, we usually say:
4:14
'I'll have the something… fish… chicken… risotto.'
4:20
Or, 'Can I get the...', and what you want to order.
4:24
So, for example, when I eat at my favourite restaurant, I always get 'the risotto'.
4:32
Thanks for listening to Real Easy English.
4:35
If you like restaurants, you could try our drama
4:38
series The White Elephant all about a busy restaurant kitchen.
4:47
Bye.
