Hello and welcome to Real Easy English.

0:04

In this podcast, we have real conversations in easy English

0:08

to help you learn.

0:09

I'm Beth.

0:10

And I'm Georgie.

0:12

You can find a video version of this podcast

0:15

and a worksheet to help you learn

0:17

on our website, bbclearningenglish.com.

0:27

So how is your week going, Georgie?

0:30

It's going well. It's only Monday.

0:32

I'm already quite tired.

0:34

How about you, Beth?

0:36

I'm OK. I'm not tired yet,

0:38

but give me till this afternoon.

0:41

So, Beth, what are we talking about today?

0:44

Today we're going to talk about games.

0:46

The kind of games we like playing.

0:49

Maybe games we don't like as much.

0:51

So shall we start the conversation?

0:53

Yes, let's get started!

0:55

So, Beth, do you enjoy games?

0:58

It depends on the kind of games.

1:02

I think if it's something physical where you're, I don't know,

1:06

running around a park or being silly – sporty things.

1:10

Those kind of fun games I enjoy.

1:12

But if it's like board games or card games,

1:17

honestly, I don't really like them.

1:20

What about you?

1:21

I do like games. I also like sporty games.

1:24

We did that in the park, didn't we, with our team?

1:27

We did, we did. Which was really fun and it's a good bonding experience.

1:31

But I, unlike you, do like card games.

1:35

And I enjoy playing them with friends in the pub.

1:39

I can be quite awkward

1:41

so sometimes if I feel like I don't want to talk anymore, I suggest a game.

1:46

And then we don't have to talk to people anymore.

1:49

I feel like if it's a card game where you have, like, a question

1:55

and it's like, I don't know, you've got five seconds,

1:58

like, name three modes of transport.

2:00

Those kind of like talking, fun, laughing games with cards I enjoy.

2:05

But if it's something to do with the hearts and the diamonds... urgh no.

2:11

I just think I'd rather have a conversation

2:13

and just talk to my friends or whoever I'm with.

2:17

OK. So you don't like slow games,

2:19

so probably you wouldn't like things like Monopoly, which go on

2:23

for hours – your whole evening.

2:25

Honestly, I think I had a bad experience as a child with Monopoly. This game...

2:31

We went away with all of our neighbours.

2:34

There were lots of people, and we played a game of Monopoly

2:37

and it lasted about, I don't know, five hours.

2:41

Probably not that long.

2:42

Yeah. No, probably.

2:43

Monopoly lasts for so long.

2:45

It's so long.

2:46

But also people get really aggressive and competitive with Monopoly,

2:49

don't they?

2:50

Is that because people cheat?

2:53

Yeah. Well, people can cheat. Yeah, for sure.

2:56

But people get... It's like they think the game is their real life

3:00

and they get so angry and people lose friendships.

3:04

That is my house!

3:06

Now, you said 'cheat'.

3:08

What does that mean?

3:09

Well, 'cheat' is to, kind of, lie or say something that isn't true.

3:17

For example, you might pretend that you have something and actually you don't.

3:22

Cheating is seen as negative.

3:24

Yes.

3:25

It's like you're not following the rules as well.

3:28

That's it, yeah.

3:29

Do you like cheating?

3:32

When I was a child,

3:34

I liked to cheat.

3:35

But no, because now it just feels dishonest.

3:39

If I... if I win a game, I want to win because I actually was good enough

3:45

or did well enough to win.

3:46

Yes.

3:47

Are you a cheat?

3:49

I'm not a cheat.

3:50

Because I think I'm... I'm too much of a...

3:52

what we call a 'goody-goody', or someone who likes to follow the rules.

3:57

So, Georgie, a quiz is a type of game, I guess.

4:01

Do you like quizzes?

4:03

Yes, I also like quizzes.

4:05

I used to go quite a lot to something

4:08

we have a lot in the UK called a pub quiz, where you go to a pub,

4:11

there are lots of teams and you answer questions with your team.

4:16

And I used to really enjoy that because

4:18

a) you're socialising with your friends in the pub,

4:22

but I find it really satisfying when you get the questions right.

4:25

I've actually won a couple of pub quizzes.

4:28

Have you?

4:29

Yeah.

4:29

Well done.

4:30

It's really hard sometimes when all of the questions are general knowledge

4:35

that you don't know anything about.

4:37

That's really boring.

4:39

But when you know the questions, it's fun.

4:48

Let's recap the vocabulary we had during the conversation.

4:52

We had 'board games'.

4:53

These are games where players usually move pieces

4:57

around a flat board like chess.

5:00

We had 'quiz', which is a game where you answer questions.

5:05

'Cheat' means to be dishonest when playing a game,

5:09

and you can also call a person a 'cheat' if they are dishonest in a game.

5:14

We had 'goody-goody', which is someone who likes following rules, like me.

5:21

And you can do a 'quiz' on our website.

5:24

Go to bbclearningenglish.com and you'll also find a worksheet there

5:29

so you can test what you've learnt.

5:31

See you then.

5:32

Bye.
