Hello and welcome to Real Easy English.

0:10
I'm Beth.
0:11
And I'm Georgie.

0:28
Hello, Georgie.
0:29
How are you today?
0:30
I'm very well, thank you,
0:32
Beth. How are you?
0:33
I'm very good, very good.
0:35
Today we are talking about mess.
0:39
Now, mess is when something is untidy.
0:43
I left my house in a bit of a mess this morning.
0:47
Oh dear, Beth. That's not very good.
0:50
I slept in a bit too long.
0:53
My kitchen is a mess.
0:55
There are pans on the side.
0:59
I don't want to think about it really.
1:01
Beth, that sounds disgusting.
1:03
Are you a messy person in general?
1:06
I like things to be clean,
1:09
but if there is a bit of mess, I'm OK with it.
1:12
But I try to sort out the mess as soon as I can,
1:18
but you know how sometimes you cook dinner, for example, and then
1:24
I don't do the washing up immediately because I want to eat my food hot,
1:30
so I will eat, relax for a bit and then I will clean the kitchen.
1:36
Do you have, like, a rule in your house for the length of time
1:41
you can leave the washing up?
1:42
Like, does it have to be that evening or can it be the next day?
1:48
I like it to be that evening,
1:50
but it's not always that evening, which I don't like.
1:54
What about you in your house?
1:57
Is it tidy?
1:58
Is it messy?
2:00
It's usually quite tidy because I live with two other people.
2:04
So, we all try to be considerate with the shared spaces.
2:11
So, yeah.
2:12
And my room, I try to tidy every few days.
2:16
So, yeah.
2:17
That sounds quite tidy.
2:19
Beth, do you have a favourite job to do around the house?
2:22
Or a least favourite job?
2:25
I have a least favourite job and that is washing up.
2:29
I hate washing the dishes, but we have a dishwasher so I use the dishwasher.
2:35
But there are some things, like some pans, that I should wash up.
2:41
So, I sometimes do them, but my husband does them quite a lot.
2:48
Is there any way that you make washing up a more enjoyable activity?
2:53
There is. I put music on, I put a song on,
2:57
and I make sure I've finished by the end of the song,
3:00
and it just makes me happy because I can just sing along
3:04
and not focus on hating washing up.
3:07
And it's not even that bad.
3:09
I quite like tidying my room because I find it quite satisfying,
3:14
because you... you end up with a good result at the end.
3:18
You have a tidy space to relax in and spend time in.
3:23
That's actually on my to-do list at the moment.
3:26
Later I'm going to go home and tidy my room.
3:30
Beth, do you have anything on your to-do list?
3:34
I do need to hoover, so hoovering is on my to-do list.
3:39
A 'to-do list' is a list of jobs that you need to do.
3:44
So, I do need to hoover,
3:47
but I'm not sure if I'll do it today.
3:49
I might do it tomorrow.
3:57
OK. Let's recap the vocabulary we heard during the conversation,
4:03
starting with 'mess'.
4:05
A mess is when something is untidy or dirty.
4:09
For example, this morning I left my kitchen in a bit of a mess.
4:14
We also used the adjective 'messy' to describe a dirty or untidy place.
4:20
We can also describe a person as 'messy',
4:23
which means that they don't clean things and they often make a mess.
4:28
The opposite of 'messy' is 'tidy'.
4:31
So, a place, like your bedroom, or Georgie's bedroom, can be 'tidy',
4:37
and you can also be described as a 'tidy person'.
4:41
That's if you usually clean things and don't make a mess.
4:45
And a 'to-do list' is a list of jobs you need to do –
4:49
sometimes jobs around the house, like cleaning.
4:52
That's it for this episode of Real Easy English.
4:56
