this is the end of an era without any

0:02

doubt at all it was a friendly subdued

0:07

thoughtful well-controlled

0:10

and

0:11

obviously people with fond memories and

0:13

wanting to be respectful and the

0:15

atmosphere is dignified

0:17

well i can remember when the coronation

0:20

in 1953

0:22

that we got a television specifically

0:24

for that occasion

0:26

sense of service and duty

0:30

work ethic

0:32

dignity calmness and diplomacy

0:35

it's someone's mom it's someone's gran

0:37

it's it's it's a family member i think

0:40

she was a real

0:41

positive role model she was always so

0:45

dignified and

0:48

was always there at the at the big

0:50

occasions and led to the country really

0:54

in a dignified manner

0:55

hiya welcome to easy english so as

0:58

you're probably well aware queen

1:00

elizabeth ii passed away recently so we

1:03

thought during the strange and unique

1:05

time in the uk it would only be fitting

1:07

to head down to the beach and ask the

1:09

people of brighton what memories they

1:11

have of her during her 70-year reign as

1:13

queen

1:14

i'm also interested to know they'll be

1:16

watching the following proceedings

1:17

including her funeral and also what they

1:20

think might change if anything once king

1:22

charles takes the throne now before we

1:24

get started please don't forget to

here we go

1:35

[Music]

1:48

the thing that stands out most for me

1:50

was the um the silver jubilee

1:54

when i was

1:56

would i've been 11 probably and that was

1:58

a really big celebration okay um

2:02

did you do something for it the schools

2:04

all did something i remember being on

2:05

the back of like a carnival truck

2:08

everyone was dressed in red white and

2:10

blue

2:11

um big tea parties in the street it was

2:14

a really big occasion i think if you're

2:16

not from britain you view more the queen

2:19

more is like you know the representative

2:21

of the uk when you know more than our

2:23

prime ministers more than the prime

2:25

ministers yes in some ways is that

2:27

because we've had so many

2:28

i think so i mean and you haven't had

2:30

the best run of prime ministers in the

2:32

last like

2:33

15 years right right and so the queen is

2:36

a much more like kind of dependable or

2:39

stable presence through those years in

2:41

canada we have a very strong feeling for

2:43

the queen

2:45

she's visited our country

2:47

many times very beloved in canada yeah

2:51

for her

2:52

devotion uh to the commonwealth

2:56

for her hard work in her role

2:59

and as a role model for

3:02

service to things that you believe in

3:06

and

3:06

she's

3:07

always on our postage stamps yeah she's

3:10

a big part of life in canada so we're

3:13

very sorry to see her

3:15

pass away but by the same token her

3:17

legacy is is immense and very

3:20

appreciated

3:21

well we've lived through three jubilees

3:25

so

3:26

and each one i think has been a

3:27

reflection of the

3:30

high steam in which she's been held

3:32

purely because of the service that she's

3:34

rendered

3:36

incredible really

3:38

she's always managed to

3:40

devote herself to service

3:43

[Music]

3:44

without ever expressing personal

3:46

opinions

3:48

um which is a

3:51

amazing feat in itself

3:54

she went to a country show i believe it

3:56

was and she got extremely excited when

3:59

the cows came on

4:01

which made my day because i don't know

4:04

it was just such a personal moment that

4:06

sort of connected me to uh is that as a

4:08

real person that's excited over

4:10

something that maybe you know i'd be

4:12

excited to see for the first time kind

4:14

of thing it just goes through your mind

4:15

about how much she worked and how much

4:18

little time she probably had to enjoy

4:20

being a mother

4:21

um a grandmother and all that sort of

4:23

stuff so you're thinking more on the

4:24

personal side of things as opposed to

4:26

the queen the monarchy kind of stuff oh

4:28

she was i mean first and foremost she's

4:30

a human being yeah um

4:32

and you know think about that sort of

4:33

stuff

4:34

i think the thing that i'll

4:35

always remember actually

4:37

about her is the fact

4:39

that when she was dying she somehow

4:43

managed

4:44

to get off her deathbed

4:47

and stand up

4:48

and

4:50

welcome in the next prime minister the

4:52

15th prime minister that she had done

4:55

i think that that summarized the

4:57

strength of character that she actually

4:58

had

4:59

in that

5:00

she knew that it was her duty

5:02

and somehow it looked as though she was

5:04

going for the record

5:06

in that she had welcomed in 15 prime

5:08

ministers from winston churchill to liz

5:11

trust and when you looked at her

5:13

she was immensely frail

5:16

and you could see the bruises on her

5:18

hand which showed that she had been you

5:20

know getting a cannula or a drip in

5:22

there and yet she

5:25

managed to do that and that shows

5:27

immense strength of character

5:29

and shortly after that she died and that

5:32

will be my abiding image of her what do

5:34

you think

5:35

will change if anything with um

5:39

with

5:39

now king charles seems weird to say that

5:42

it's interesting isn't it because he's

5:44

obviously got his own ideas

5:46

on how he's going to um

5:49

lead the country and

5:52

and reign as our monarch but i think

5:55

he will probably follow very much in his

5:57

mother's footsteps in how dignified he

6:00

is

6:01

the age he is as well i wonder whether

6:03

he will

6:05

um stay on the throne as long as she did

6:08

and see it through to the end or whether

6:09

he will

6:11

give it up and and hand over to william

6:13

at some at some point

6:15

so it's interesting we watch with

6:17

interest how do you think king charles

6:18

will fare in comparison to elizabeth i

6:21

mean this is what everyone's been

6:23

discussing right i mean elizabeth was

6:24

very uniquely as a public figure

6:27

reserved and i'm not sure that this is

6:29

how

6:30

king charles conducted himself when he

6:32

was prince

6:34

so it remains to be seen people bring

6:36

the same sort of you know quiet

6:39

gravitas as elizabeth did i think he'll

6:42

try to modernize things i think he'll

6:45

try to

6:46

um support projects that meet his goals

6:50

he's a well-known environmentalist for

6:52

instance

6:53

we were impressed by the way to take a

6:55

solar-powered bus to get here from

6:58

brighton we we don't have solar-powered

7:01

buses in vancouver yet so we're going to

7:03

try and take a lesson

7:04

from the uk on that yeah you think he

7:07

might you think he won't face too many

7:09

hurdles in pushing these things

7:11

forward you know his own interest in

7:13

like you say environment so many years

7:15

of being in training for

7:18

his role i'm sure he has quite a few

7:20

people that support him and support his

7:22

causes he'd be well connected of course

7:25

and so i think he'll he'll have a pretty

7:27

smooth

7:28

transition and be able to realize some

7:30

of his goals but of course i have no

7:32

idea but

7:34

i hope he will and i also think william

7:37

would make a great king

7:38

i think there might be a slight leaning

7:40

towards different charitable causes if

7:43

you like or just causes themselves but i

7:46

think

7:47

charles has been brought up within that

7:50

environment of duty

7:53

work ethic

7:54

and service

7:56

for all his life so i see no reason why

7:59

that should change at all um but i think

8:02

he will probably bring a slightly

8:04

different

8:05

nuance to the

8:08

um

8:09

matters of today if you like

8:11

particularly environment what do you

8:12

think then if anything other than money

8:14

in stamps

8:16

what will change once we have king

8:18

charles

8:19

anything

8:21

you think i think it's hard to tell at

8:22

the moment for me personally like as i'm

8:24

not quite connected to it all i don't

8:27

know what's going to change

8:28

but i think there will be changes i

8:30

think i think there will be it's a newer

8:32

it's a king isn't it

8:34

yeah it seems big yes it seems like a

8:36

big deal so it's got it's got to change

8:38

something hasn't it this is the end of

8:40

an era without any doubt at all

8:43

and we have most people in this country

8:45

have been used to having just this one

8:47

monarch and we all think that we know

8:49

what chance is like because he's been

8:51

serving the longest apprenticeship

8:53

for in

8:55

possibly history you know he's starting

8:57

his new job at a time when everybody

8:59

else is retired and we think we know him

9:01

yeah

9:02

and we think you know many people

9:04

probably think that he's going to be

9:05

divisive but

9:06

um those people who know him seem to

9:08

suggest that he's going to be um quite a

9:11

good leader and you know he has to

9:14

really up his game if he's going to make

9:16

the monarchy relevant in modern society

9:19

will you be watching the the funeral on

9:22

monday yes i will be well it's such

9:25

and has it's such an historic kind of

9:28

event isn't it yeah

9:29

and has obviously been planned for a

9:32

long time what how they were going to

9:34

play it out and right yeah all of the

9:37

official kind of

9:39

way they do everything so it will be

9:41

interesting to watch will you be maybe

9:44

watching the funeral on monday um

9:46

i think i was supposed to be going to

9:48

london on monday which i won't be

9:49

anymore

9:50

um that'd be hectic hectic yeah a little

9:52

bit scary in london for that but um i

9:55

think i'll probably watch it yeah oh

9:57

yeah okay

9:59

i'll watch it because i've got lots of

10:01

friends that seem to be upset by the

10:03

situation

10:04

and

10:06

even though

10:07

there's a lot of controversy around it

10:10

i believe that you know it's someone's

10:13

mom it's someone's grand it's it's it's

10:15

a family member and not only that is

10:18

it's it's you know it's going to be a

10:19

big celebration it's going to be a

10:20

beautiful moment for

10:22

for telly i guess uh to be honest i

10:24

think i'll try to go and at least crowd

10:26

spectate just because like oh you might

10:28

go to london to go to watch yeah i mean

10:30

actually last week i was in london and i

10:32

went outside to see it's like saint

10:34

paul's cathedral but it's just

10:35

interesting from let's say sociological

10:37

perspective to people watch what's

10:39

happening oh wow okay well i hope you

10:42

have i'm not gonna say a nice time is

10:47

yeah i guess so i mean you know it is um

10:51

something where many people are coming

10:52

together and sharing an emotional

10:54

experience which outside of concerts is

10:56

not sort of the norm in modern society

10:59

right so it's an interesting experience

11:01

thanks for watching this week's episode

11:03

please let us know in the comments below

11:05

your thoughts and memories of queen

11:06

elizabeth ii

11:08

and then we'll see you next week

11:12
