hello welcome to easy english so today

0:02

i'm on brighton beach and i want to find

0:04

out how the people of brighton met their

0:06

best friend

0:07

let's go how did you meet your best

0:10

friend

0:12

um we bought a house off him

0:16

i turned up in raf larbrook which is a

0:20

rf camp in germany the fellow i

0:24

was replacing was in the same room

0:27

as my now best mate uh moving about

0:31

20 minutes they'd uh they stripped me

0:33

naked

0:34

and tried to shave me nuts so that's how

0:36

that's how we met

0:38

and that was it that was it been friends

0:41

ever since

0:42

that was in about 1980 about 1984 i

0:45

suppose i got there

0:46

i see was it was it english or german

0:48

yeah yeah no he's english we were both

0:50

aria firefighters at the time

0:52

so uh yeah and we've remained uh well

0:55

him

0:55

there's another two fellows i was in

0:57

germany with um the four of us

0:59

remain sort of friends ever since really

1:01

so yeah um

1:03

my best friend her name's benita she

1:05

lives in scotland

1:06

um we met a long time ago in malaysia

1:09

where we were both born

1:11

and she is the sister of my first

1:16

boyfriend ex-boyfriend

1:17

[Laughter]

1:19

how did you meet your best friend i met

1:22

my best friends at school

1:23

when i was seven in junior school

1:28

um yeah and auntie claudia and auntie

1:31

ellen

1:32

and they're now my children's godparents

1:35

um well

1:36

one of them's mine one of them's your

1:38

girl parent yep and

1:40

um we've been friends forever we don't

1:43

live anywhere near each other anymore

1:46

so one lives in oxford and one lives in

1:49

london

1:51

i met my best friend vicky when i was

1:53

eight years old

1:54

in junior school and we have remained

1:58

friends ever since we went to senior

2:00

school together

2:02

and then i got married and had children

2:06

and she didn't she remained single

2:09

and but we've always met up once a week

2:12

and now i am 66 years old

2:16

and we are still best mates and we see

2:18

each other every week

2:19

no really it's fantastic wow

2:23

we've lots of support through thick and

2:26

thin

2:27

ups and downs of life and uh we're

2:29

always there for each other

2:31

how did you meet your best friend i met

2:34

my best friend at primary school

2:37

i was about six years of age

2:40

we went through school together we went

2:43

to

2:44

junior school then as we got older

2:47

we went our own paths our own separate

2:50

ways

2:51

but we kept in touch i moved down to

2:55

live in

2:56

this area in rottingdean and

2:59

my friend went to live in harrogate in

3:01

yorkshire

3:03

but we still kept in touch we had plans

3:07

to uh meet up regular ongoing holidays

3:10

after our retirement

3:12

and he died of cancer about six years

3:16

ago now

3:16

so all them plans went out the window

3:19

but we still keep in touch

3:21

with his wife to see how she is

3:24

and we just go along from there so it

3:26

was a great shame that he died when he

3:28

did but

3:29

he was a very young man when he died

3:31

yeah but

3:32

uh i'm afraid that he's live and can you

3:34

tell me what his name was

3:36

eric eric how did you meet your best

3:38

friend

3:40

well my best friend um i wouldn't say

3:42

i've got just one best friend but um

3:45

currently i've got two very good friends

3:47

who i've known since i was about 14

3:50

which is getting on near 60 years

3:55

i met them both at school i met one we

3:57

went to the same school

3:58

using he's in a class below me he was my

4:00

brother's best friend

4:02

and the other chaplain met him on a bus

4:04

um on the wage school so

4:06

yeah and they've remained good friends

4:08

for yeah for the last nearly 60 years

4:11

tell me about um how you met your best

4:13

friend

4:15

um i met um my best friend do i give

4:18

names yeah

4:19

i met my best friend sandy when she

4:22

moved into my

4:22

area and we've now been friends for 42

4:26

years uh

4:28

she's a man an amazing person very

4:31

likable

4:32

very easy to get on with do you want to

4:35

ask me some questions about her

4:38

yeah go on then so um when you said she

4:39

moved to your area how that how did you

4:42

actually meet though

4:43

um walking the children walking our

4:46

babies

4:47

okay yeah she hasn't been a lifelong

4:49

best friend

4:50

but from the age of mid-20s my my

4:54

mid-20s she has been this video is

5:52

in lesson credits what was it about them

5:55

that like

5:56

did it just click or is there certain

5:57

characteristics yeah i i think it just

6:00

clicked and similar attitudes to a lot

6:02

of things or

6:03

similar likes and interests and so what

6:06

is it about dave that like

6:08

other than the the nut shaving that like

6:10

sort of uh

6:12

made you just have this close connection

6:15

i don't know really it's uh well we had

6:17

things in common

6:18

we were doing the same uh we're in the

6:21

same line of work i suppose

6:23

we're both in the forces which is sort

6:25

of a bit of a family in its own right i

6:27

suppose

6:28

uh yeah he was just a bit of a drunkard

6:31

and so was i at

6:32

17 18 sir she's fun

6:36

she's fun um and she's quite insightful

6:39

say she's really really stubborn that's

6:43

not really

6:43

fun she became my best friend but that's

6:46

definitely a very strong trait

6:49

of us and um

6:53

yeah we sort of share some interests you

6:55

know music and

6:57

and you know love of dancing and

7:00

socializing things like that and

7:02

stopping to sort of get you out of

7:04

sticky situations

7:05

her stubbornness no actually drives me

7:07

mad absolutely

7:08

[Laughter]

7:10

what are her character traits why is she

7:13

such a

7:14

good friend um she is fun

7:18

um we like the best things together

7:21

or you know walking and partying

7:25

occasionally

7:26

when we're allowed not now but um

7:29

and we go out exploring i think that's

7:32

been

7:32

the best thing and since lockdown you

7:35

know we go out together

7:36

um into the countryside we both

7:39

appreciate

7:40

the peace and um

7:44

the forest bathing i suppose you can

7:46

call it we love the woods

7:48

uh and we share just things that you

7:51

know we both

7:52

enjoy eating drinking

7:55

and we've got lots of memories from the

7:57

past you know so we talk about

8:00

our memories it's so important to have a

8:03

good friend but to have one

8:04

of that long standing is i think quite

8:07

unique

8:07

hmm yeah yeah i don't know many people

8:10

that have friends since that age from

8:11

eight should you say

8:12

yes wow yeah we both have the same sort

8:15

of personality

8:16

yeah and we just sort of like you can

8:19

when you're at junior school you have

8:20

your little friends

8:21

yeah and you have your mates and there's

8:24

some who you call

8:24

friends but you don't really play with

8:27

them or

8:28

go near them but they're still friends

8:31

but we were really

8:32

really close yeah like every day at you

8:35

know playtime

8:36

yeah where's eric oh or he was saying

8:40

where's malcolm you know and then we

8:42

just sort of grew up that way

8:44

and our parents and eric's parents

8:48

mixed and got together and we just

8:51

formed like a group well we are all

8:54

musicians

8:56

so we are in the same band together um

8:59

so i play the drums

9:00

and guys are singer and clive's a

9:02

harmonica player

9:03

nowadays yes and we still we kept that

9:05

band going wow

9:07

um and that's been a major part of

9:09

keeping us in touch with each other

9:11

and having a lot of fun as well oh wow

9:13

what's your band's name

9:15

it's called the splinters she

9:16

compliments me

9:18

definitely okay definitely she brings

9:20

the best out in me

9:22

whereas you know you meet people and you

9:25

think oh they're lovely but then

9:26

you just can't connect well we connected

9:30

straight away

9:31

but she's the not the superior one

9:35

of the group but she does

9:39

yes she compliments me and how often do

9:42

you speak

9:42

uh depending sometimes once every other

9:45

day and

9:47

sometimes once a month you know it just

9:49

depends

9:50

on what's happening and where we are and

9:52

how how often do you speak now

9:54

uh well he's in manchester so uh we try

9:57

and meet up once a year

9:59

uh we normally speak i don't know maybe

10:01

three or four times a year i suppose

10:04

not not not that often i suppose but but

10:07

when you do it's like

10:09

yeah we sort of pick up from where we

10:10

left off really and uh

10:12

yeah it's like we sort of haven't been

10:14

apart for that long if you see what i

10:15

mean because we just all

10:16

carry on where we were so yeah

10:19

and now you said she lives in scotland

10:21

right she lives in scotland do you live

10:22

on the coast i live in london actually

10:25

okay

10:26

yeah so then that's quite a distance so

10:28

how do you maintain

10:29

this friendship well luckily the zoom

10:32

there's face time

10:33

especially during a pandemic and uh yeah

10:36

we

10:37

chat a lot and text a lot things like

10:39

that and

10:40

i'm planning to see her soon actually

10:42

you know since we're coming out of this

10:44

pandemic

10:44

you going up or she's coming down i um

10:47

wouldn't mind going up just for a change

10:49

of scenery

10:50

yeah and i'm here and you stay in touch

10:53

yes

10:53

yeah we stay in touch um we're seeing

10:56

each other this weekend oh really

10:58

not you and um

11:02

we stay in touch on the by texting

11:05

uh and zoom and um

11:08

uh sending emails and messages play

11:11

dates

11:11

and play dates dates and how frequently

11:14

do you

11:14

speak to each other um

11:18

probably every week not as much as we

11:21

used to before we all had children

11:23

good memories great memories some some

11:27

really good times

11:28

i'll i'll just tell you one story okay

11:31

yeah

11:32

and we've been out one night uh

11:36

and he lived his parents house

11:39

backed onto the rochdale canal

11:42

so we've been out for a night and we had

11:44

a few a drink and we're going home there

11:46

and he says i know a shortcut

11:50

to my parents house right rochdale canal

11:53

i know part of the canal where it's

11:55

shallow

11:57

so i said good because i don't want to

11:59

walk all the way around

12:02

so we had a few a drink we just you know

12:04

plopped ourselves into the rochdale

12:06

canal

12:07

i thought it would be uncle deep and

12:09

was up to here

12:11

so we're so we got to wade through the

12:14

rochdale canal

12:16

i said eric what happened he said

12:19

ah it was further up i remember now it

12:22

was further up and we were absolutely i

12:25

went to hearing water i remember

12:27

i i mean we're just wading through

12:30

and at the time you know

12:33

it was funny but in the morning it was

12:35

even more funny

12:36

you know when we you know recollected it

12:39

and we thought of what we'd done

12:41

it was absolutely superb yeah thanks for

12:44

watching this week's episode

12:45

let me know in the comments below how

12:46

you make your best friend and we'll see

12:48

you next week

12:49

bye so we complement each other i

12:52

suppose

12:52

we don't drink like we used to so it's

12:54

nice to go out and not get absolutely

12:57

hammered and just have a normal

12:58

conversation now supposed now we're a

13:00

lot older

13:02

no it's five minutes are you are you not

13:04

my best friend

13:07

i don't think he will be for very long
