0:00

is it fair to say that you two are best

0:01

friends yes BFFs B yeah totally she

0:06

always makes a situation that's awkward

0:08

un awkward just by being her beautiful

0:11

self I really like like the fact that

0:13

you're so sensitive and and

0:15

listen a very good listener and since

0:18

then we are every day together siblings

0:24

sisters interesting very interesting I

0:28

know you're mine I didn't know I was

0:29

yours

0:30

it's on film there it's official anytime

0:33

I need like anything he'll always be

0:35

there that's a good one that's not

0:38

always the case for a lot of people I'm

0:40

very lucky always can count on just an

0:43

honest opinion and also compliments as

0:45

well does not wait a second as soon as

0:47

you walk out the door you have amazing

0:49

St and does wonders for like confidence

0:51

and everything she's a inspirational

0:54

person to me a that's so sweet Our Lives

0:57

haven't always been easy since we've

0:59

know each other

1:01

and I think you know Bev is like a true

1:04

friend that you can always count we

1:07

don't cry

1:09

Andrea welcome to a new episode of easy

1:12

English so today we set out to find

1:15

groups of friends in Brighton to ask

1:18

them how they first met what connected

1:21

them and what they considered to be the

1:23

other person's best quality as a friend

1:27

we also wanted to get their advice on

1:29

what quality are needed in order to be a

1:31

good friend and to find friends we hope

1:34

you all

1:36

enjoy would you mind telling me how you

1:39

two first

1:40

met um so we met at University Halls we

1:45

were nextal neighbors well we met in uni

1:47

first year we both did a foundation year

1:49

in the same course we first met on New

1:52

Year's Eve at a house party how did you

1:55

two first meet and become friends um so

1:58

we do Clinical Psychology we're both in

2:00

Masters and so we met in class we met in

2:03

St class yeah okay and what were you sat

2:05

together or um originally no what

2:08

connected you we had like a mutual

2:10

friend in common and then he kind of

2:12

brought us both together yeah I met G

2:16

it's uh eight years ago eight years ago

2:20

I have a I have one break when bed and

2:23

breakfast

2:25

in and one day she booked to one room at

2:28

my home and that we are every day

2:33

together we met in uh Secondary School

2:36

mhm kind of around kind of around year

2:38

nine okay we not actually had siblings

2:40

so there you go and at what point would

2:42

you say that you two are also friends

2:45

are best friends yeah definitely and how

2:47

at what point did you discover that and

2:49

how did it come to you realize actually

2:50

we're very when we older I was say we've

2:54

over once we' had marriages divorces

2:57

yeah we met on the the sort of first

2:59

night we both moved in and it turns out

3:02

we're we're both from Wales so we had

3:04

that that like Bond are you close bying

3:08

whales or no complete other opposite

3:10

sides of the country but really we end

3:13

up being two weles next door to each

3:14

other I came to UNI with two other

3:17

friends and my friend lived in the same

3:19

building okay as um Bowie oh in

3:21

accommodation yeah yeah okay yeah she

3:23

lived on my floor and so I went hey and

3:27

those two became friends yeah those two

3:28

became friends

3:30

we had a lot of common and we really

3:33

both liked a band at the time um called

3:36

the the that nobody really was into yeah

3:40

there was a little bit obscure so it's

3:43

very unusual to find somebody that

3:45

actually lik them yeah so of course

3:47

we absolutely bullied the guy that was

3:50

doing the music put on some the the and

3:52

then course me new was up dancing yeah

3:55

and that was kind of it it what is it

3:58

that like kind of connction you all then

3:59

did you have similar interest or

4:01

peculiarity peity we do a lot of gaming

4:05

together yeah we play a lot of games

4:07

just known each other forever really

4:09

yeah what kind of connects you two

4:11

together like interests or or cuz you're

4:13

doing you're doing the same course you

4:15

say we us to do we hated it so we Mutual

4:19

hatred Mutual

4:21

hatred there was a house two doors away

4:25

from where Bev lived that had been for

4:27

sale for a while they were like why

4:29

don't you by that we lived in a

4:31

different village and we look thought oh

4:33

no it's a bit small and then we did end

4:37

up buying it so we became neighbors as

4:41

well and uh I already had children then

4:44

you had yours so this was how many years

4:47

ago 30 years ago 30 years ago yeah 30

4:50

italki.com

5:45

English to start your first lesson and

5:47

get $10 in I talkie credits would you

5:50

mind saying what the other person's best

5:52

quality is in your eyes as a friend you

5:55

know so I think Irene she's just a able

5:59

to make conversations with anybody and

6:01

everybody she always makes a situation

6:03

that's awkward un awkward just by being

6:06

her beautiful self we love going to

6:10

restaurants together Ur to restaurants

6:13

yeah amata makes me uh she made me

6:17

discover the new restaurant in ra when

6:19

when I

6:21

arrived so we enjoy having uh having fun

6:26

uh laughing together around the around

6:29

meal

6:30

uh outside and also inside because she's

6:32

a very good cooker too so she often

6:35

welcomes me at home to enjoy her the

6:38

meals she prepare oh W and I like her

6:40

character her character yeah yeah what

6:43

would you say is the other person's best

6:44

quality then as a

6:46

friends my sister's I'm her best quality

6:49

she sees good in everybody no try to

6:54

she's she's a inspirational person to me

6:57

a that's so sweet really like like the

7:00

fact that you're so sensitive and and

7:02

listen you're a very good listener very

7:05

good at advice Morgan any time I need to

7:08

call you he's always online that's good

7:10

and anytime I need like anything he'll

7:12

always be there that's a good one that's

7:15

not always the case for a lot of people

7:17

I'm very

7:19

lucky I think you're very head strop

7:21

yeah thank you you know what you like

7:23

and you're kind of you're a very strong

7:24

personality and that's such a good thing

7:26

because you just kind of are so bright

7:29

and light up for whatever and yeah shut

7:34

up nicely said what would you say is the

7:37

other person's best quality in a as a

7:39

friend uh J can I start yeah U my worst

7:43

quality is interrupting

7:44

[Laughter]

7:46

clearly uh Jane is one of the

7:50

kindest most genuine lovely

7:54

honest fantastic looking um brilliant

7:58

fun far she never changes she's so sweet

8:02

like it's just easy to have conversation

8:04

with her like you don't feel any sort of

8:06

judgment like just yeah she's just sweet

8:10

I mean the first thing

8:12

uh which amazed me when I met her the

8:15

first time is her generosity she's uh

8:18

somebody she's very generous she's crazy

8:21

that's true because I can tell you a

8:23

story when I arrived first time in her

8:25

bed and breakfast the first day I was

8:27

alone in my bedroom and and she said to

8:30

me don't stay don't stay alone come to

8:32

me there's a uh there was a match of

8:35

football a European contest I don't

8:37

remember which one and she said to me

8:38

come at home you will have dinner with

8:41

us and I met her husband and it was the

8:44

I would say the beginning of our

8:45

friendship AG other of friendship yeah

8:48

that's great for my sister really I look

8:51

up to her because she she very laidback

8:53

about life she takes everything on the

8:56

chin and she really enjoys the simple

9:00

things in life so it reminds me that

9:01

I've got to do that as well cuz I'm

9:03

always like chasing this that and the

9:05

other whereas actually you can have a

9:06

really good quality of life just leaning

9:08

into the little things that you find joy

9:10

in and she's really good at that so it

9:11

kind of inspires me and reminds me that

9:13

I least be more like that Sam's always

9:16

ready to do what drop everything to help

9:19

he's always ready to just stop what he's

9:21

doing and always act soice to yeah sort

9:23

anyone out with the pair of views just

9:27

people that I can be open with open with

9:29

which is

9:30

yeah good and so for both of you like

9:32

I've known you for so long that we can

9:33

just talk about anything and it doesn't

9:35

matter there's no like hiding things

9:37

really and you're just interesting to

9:40

talk to Mel in particular you're just

9:41

very interesting to talk to which is

9:43

always nice very strange why I think for

9:46

so honest always can count on just an

9:49

honest opinion and also compliments as

9:51

well does not wait a second soon as you

9:53

walk out the door you look amazing and

9:55

does wonders for like confidence and

9:57

everything especially when I'm a bit

9:58

like oh do I look good or do I like this

10:00

outfit or I'm trying new makeup you

10:03

always look good we can always count B

10:04

like you look amazing today ah a that's

10:07

that's really nice by the way be has

10:09

just been um you know our lives haven't

10:12

always been easy since we've known each

10:14

other and I think you know Bev is like a

10:18

true friend that you can always count on

10:22

we don't under we don't see each other a

10:25

lot no and when we do it's like that

10:29

that's great so but yeah she's sort of a

10:31

perfect person and look at her stop it

10:35

how gorgeous is she what would you say

10:38

is like maybe like a defining quality

10:41

that you need to have in order to become

10:42

a good friend or to find friends uh I

10:46

think just being open and like just not

10:49

having like a specific person in your

10:51

brain to like want to be friends with

10:53

yeah I think being non-judgmental

10:55

wouldn't be for me like just how do you

10:57

mean like not going out of like a stand

10:59

or something yeah just not like like I

11:02

don't know like so I listen to like

11:04

heavy rock music and Irene doesn't like

11:06

if I was the type of person that was

11:07

like I only want to find friends that

11:08

listen to rock music and like my kind of

11:10

things and like I would probably have

11:11

like two friends I think Honesty

11:14

openness kind of yeah uh lack of not

11:18

needing to hold a face having uh I think

11:21

the key to any good friendship is being

11:24

completely true to yourself with each

11:25

other cuz that's the actual most

11:27

magnetic thing about people in order to

11:29

make friends just like striking up

11:31

random conversations yeah right anyone's

11:34

happy to talk to them if you just say hi

11:36

well most people at least I think

11:38

communication they say a lot in uh

11:40

relationships I think it translates to

11:42

friendships as well because there's

11:43

loads of boundary settings and like just

11:46

likes and not likes and everything and I

11:48

just think communication with that

11:49

person especially when friendships can

11:51

end quite abruptly on things people

11:54

don't just talk about just sit down and

11:55

be like hey listen you did this to me

11:57

didn't enjoy it can you not do it again

11:58

and then it's like a great and also just

12:00

communication just to build the

12:01

friendship as well get to know the

12:03

person I think on top of that also like

12:05

empathy and just kind of putting

12:08

yourself in other people's shoes you've

12:09

got to be loyal you got to have each

12:11

other's backs yeah um when you say loyal

12:15

does that mean

12:16

that you see no wrong in the other

12:19

person that you stand by them whatever

12:20

they do or you call them out for when

12:22

they do I think we'd call each other we

12:24

call each other out but we haven't had

12:26

to really have we no I think we would

12:28

and I think we're honest yeah with each

12:30

other we're quite different with with

12:32

our sort of political point of view oh

12:34

God but we sure can choose but that

12:37

doesn't have any bearing they say you

12:38

should leave politics out of like family

12:40

and friendships yeah EXA we know that

12:43

there yeah that there's differences yeah

12:46

and evil a difference really and I I

12:48

think we would never really change that

12:51

no uh but we know that you change the

12:54

person probably yeah and that's another

12:56

thing I like about Jane is Jane has

12:59

convictions and stands by them which

13:03

again is another

13:05

admirable uh quality how is it that you

13:08

can get to become friends with a

13:09

relative because sometimes you can start

13:11

off on the wrong foot right um I don't

13:14

know I think it's that

13:16

unconditional love you have even if you

13:18

have like a best friend I still think

13:19

that if they're that good a friend that

13:22

there's no judgment in no matter what

13:23

you've done in you know good or bad

13:25

they'll just say Okay accept you no

13:28

matter what you've done you can listen

13:30

to someone and find some sort of

13:32

anything you can talk about that you

13:33

both are interested in then it's really

13:35

easy to just like spend load time

13:37

together as long as you find like that

13:38

one thing that can originally connect

13:40

you I think that's all you need thank
