Hi everybody. Welcome to a new episode

0:02

of Easy English. So, after a long time

0:04

away, we're finally back in the UK. So,

0:07

I thought I'd quickly nip into Brighton

0:08

and ask a simple question to the people

0:10

wandering around. What are you up to

0:12

today? Before we get started, if you're

0:15

someone who frequently watches Easy

0:16

English, then I'd personally love it if

0:18

you would quickly subscribe to us below

0:20

to be notified about new episodes. So,

0:23

let's head into Brighton. Here we go.

0:26

Um, what are you two up to today in

0:28

Brighton?

0:30

Uh we're just shopping mostly. Yeah.

0:32

Yeah. Just heading around. Um we're

0:35

trying to find a thrift shop at the

0:36

moment. What are you two up to today in

0:38

Brighton? We are just on our lunch

0:40

break. We're going to get some sushi

0:43

actually. Can you tell me what you're up

0:44

to today in Brighton? Um we are just

0:48

wasting a day basically waiting for a

0:50

ferry. What are you up to in Brighton

0:52

today? Just wandering aimlessly around

0:55

the lanes today. So, we're here for the

0:58

beach. Obviously, I think everyone kind

1:00

of comes to Brighton for the beach. Um,

1:02

but we're on route now to an Italian

1:04

restaurant and we're here for a concert.

1:06

So, we've stayed effectively for the

1:08

weekend and we're going to enjoy a nice

1:10

pop concert um in Chalk just down the

1:12

road. So, it's not far from here, but

1:14

generally enjoying the sun. Where we

1:16

live is very poor weather at the minute.

1:18

So, we've come for a bit of an escape, I

1:21

think, is probably how to round it up.

1:23

Okay. A getaway. What are you up to in

1:26

Brighton today? So, we've come to

1:27

Brighton today to visit with my niece

1:29

and my sister who are over from France.

1:32

We're going down the lanes doing some

1:34

shopping. Now, we're heading off to the

1:36

beach. Just had something to eat.

1:38

Probably get a snack on the on the way

1:40

back and then we'll drive back to Kent,

1:41

which is where I live. So, I'm with my

1:44

boyfriend at the moment who is just out

1:45

of frame cuz he didn't want to be in the

1:47

interview. And heckling from the side.

1:49

Yeah. Um, we just went to the Hello

1:53

Kitty Cafe. Um, we had some food and now

1:57

I think we're going to we're pottery

1:58

painting. Um, and then after that, yeah,

2:01

I'm not sure. Can you explain what a

2:03

thrift shop is? Um, it's like a a shop

2:06

with secondhand items, mostly clothing.

2:10

Yeah, there's a vegan sushi restaurant

2:12

there, so that's why we're going. Okay.

2:13

And do you go there often? Yeah, it's my

2:16

when I want a nice lunch, that's my

2:17

trade.

2:19

And today feels like one of those days

2:20

to get a treat. Yeah. And what's your

2:22

order? Um I get they do sushi burritos.

2:25

So it's like a burrito with sushi, but

2:28

it's all vegan. So I normally get they

2:31

have a wrap which is like sesame

2:33

chicken, but it's not real chicken. Um

2:35

yeah, that's what I'm going to order

2:37

probably. I actually haven't decided

2:38

yet, so maybe I'll just figure it out

2:40

once I get there. Okay. Oh, there's one

2:42

behind us. Happy Mackie. That's where

2:44

we're going. Go on. Oh, really? Yeah.

2:46

We're getting a 9:00 ferry over to

2:49

Santandere and we had a day to kind of

2:51

kill. So, we thought we'd come to

2:53

Brighton and do a bit of shopping,

2:54

looking around,

2:56

browsing for old books. Oh, wow. You

2:59

come to the best place to look for old

3:00

stuff. I know. I know. I bought some

3:02

fabulous fabric as well. And I've seen

3:04

there's two shops I need to go back and

3:06

and have a look at fabrics cuz I sew.

3:08

So, I love sewing. Okay, great. And um

3:11

what are the lanes?

3:14

Yeah, just bunch of colorful shops that

3:17

fairly famous in Brighton. I think most

3:20

of it's vintage, but also I think people

3:23

just walk around to be near them, not

3:26

even to actually shop. It's just to be

3:28

in the environment of Brighton Agnes.

3:32

Yeah. Bit to unpack there. So, um, first

3:34

of all, whereabouts are you coming from?

3:36

So, we live in Wales. We're coming from

3:38

uh Cardiff. So, it's the capital of of

3:40

Wales. Okay. And do you have a Welsh

3:42

accent? I do. I think I do. I think we

3:45

have slightly different versions of a

3:47

Welsh accent. You're not from the south

3:49

from No, I'm I'm from Liverpool in the

3:51

northwest of England, but I live in Kent

3:53

now. I've been out I left Liverpool when

3:55

I was about 18 years old. And how does

3:57

the south compare to up north? It's

4:00

warmer.

4:03

It's definitely warmer. More sunshine.

4:05

It's more expensive. Definitely more

4:07

expensive. And next you're off to

4:09

pottery class. Yes, we're pottery

4:10

painting. Pottery painting day. And this

4:13

is like a hobby you have or like a

4:15

one-off? No, we just kind of like I

4:17

don't know. Usually our schedules like

4:19

don't align super well, but today we

4:20

were like, "Oh, we have like the whole

4:22

day just do a bunch of like fun stuff."

4:25

Yeah. Especially cuz it's a Monday. It's

4:26

not like super busy in town at the

4:28

moment. So, we thought just do some

4:30

whimsical activities. Sounds whimsical.

4:32

Hello Kitty and pottery painting. Before

4:34

we head back to the streets of Brighton,

4:36

I personally would like to invite any of

4:38

you that are looking to practice your

4:43

the world, hang out, exchange cultures,

4:46

and improve your English. Then why don't

4:48

you become a conversation member? Our

4:50

5:16

have pub backgrounds. We'll speak about

5:48

learning experience. If you're not sure

5:51

if the conversation membership is for

5:52

you, maybe you're too nervous or you

5:55

don't know what level the conversation

5:56

is at, then we're offering you a free

5:58

6:14

6:16

dislikes, and cultural insights, and

6:19

also get to know our other members a

6:20

little bit better. All you have to do is

6:22

go to easyenglish.vide/membership

6:26

or click the link up here. I thought

6:28

like here in Brighton cuz people like

6:30

dress a bit differently and so cuz I do

6:34

and I just thought maybe I find some

6:35

stuff. Yeah. Instead of like buying it

6:39

somewhere. Yeah. What do you two do for

6:41

work? We I both work in marketing.

6:43

Marketing in the same company at William

6:45

Reed. Yeah. You happy with your job?

6:48

Like your job? Yeah. Yeah. We um Yeah,

6:50

we run events. So, we do marketing for

6:52

events. Have you been to Brighton

6:54

before? Oh gosh. Once in my 20ies, but

6:57

um both my daughters are um here with

7:00

me. They're um coffee shopping, but they

7:02

love it here. So, they've been um I

7:05

think um thrift shopping.

7:09

I see. students

7:12

and um whereabouts do you live then? On

7:14

the aisle of white. Oh wow. Okay. Yeah.

7:16

Yeah. Wow. So you've come from the aisle

7:18

of white to Brighton. And so we had to

7:19

get a really early ferry this morning

7:21

because of the aisle of white festival.

7:22

We couldn't get booked on any decent

7:25

travel time. So we had to get a 6:30

7:27

bose and then we had a day to kill till

7:29

our 9:00 ferry. Do you live in Brighton?

7:32

No, I live South London. Okay. Yeah.

7:34

Yeah. Yeah. And how long you down for?

7:36

What's that? Sorry. How long are you

7:38

down in Brighton for? just a weekend,

7:40

three days, but my girlfriend went to

7:43

uni here, so she's kind of I come here a

7:45

couple times, but she showed me showed

7:47

me around. Yeah. Nice. Uh, and how often

7:50

have you been to Brighton before? I've

7:52

never w Okay, nice. And how are you

7:54

thinking? How you making of it? Yeah,

7:56

loving it. I My favorite bird is a

7:58

seagull, so there's a lot of that

7:59

around, so I'm quite happy. Um, but

8:01

other than that, it's very It's very

8:03

welcoming, I think. There's a lot of

8:04

It's quite diverse, isn't it? is quite

8:06

rich with all the different kinds of

8:08

people and what people are doing. So, I

8:10

think there's plenty to see here if

8:11

you're thinking of coming around. And

8:13

have you been to Brighton before? Yes,

8:15

because my daughter was at university in

8:17

Brighton for a few years, so I was down

8:20

here quite a lot. And how do you like

8:21

it? I love Brighton. Yeah, I love the

8:23

place. And are you from Brighton? Uh,

8:26

I'm from Canterbury in Kent originally,

8:28

but I've lived in Brighton for like 4

8:31

years now, I want to say. Yeah. Yeah. I

8:33

moved here for uni and I actually got my

8:35

my uni results today. Passed. Got my

8:38

degree. Got a 21. Very happy with that.

8:40

But yeah, I'm I'm just going to try and

8:41

live here as long as I can cuz I like

8:44

it. I really You'd like to stay. Yeah, I

8:45

love Brighton. It's really really nice.

8:47

Where you going for food in a minute?

8:49

Uh, Ask Italian. Ask Italian. Yeah,

8:51

we've got a voucher. So, we want the

8:53

money off. It's okay. Ask Italian is

8:56

pretty good anyway. Even if you don't

8:57

have a voucher, I think. And uh out of

9:00

interest, what are you watching? You're

9:02

you going to a concert tomorrow? We're

9:04

going to watch an artist called Peach

9:06

PRC. I think she's quite relatively

9:08

niche in the sense of of music and she

9:11

just makes fun music. Quite, you know,

9:13

queer based music. So, we're going to

9:15

have a good time. And you get a nice

9:16

long lunch break. We get an hour. Get an

9:19

hour. So, we lally just like away. It's

9:22

like grab and go situation. I won't keep

9:25

any longer than you. Thank you. Thank

9:27

you. And uh would you do something like

9:29

window shopping? I think that's mostly

9:32

what I do to be honest. Even when I'm

9:34

inside the shop, I'm I barely like park

9:36

the clothes. I just look at the corner

9:38

of them and then it's pretty much window

9:40

shopping the whole way. Yeah. Yeah.

9:41

Yeah. Mostly like browsing, right? And

9:44

um what is that something you'd like to

9:46

do quite often then? I do it quite often

9:48

to be fair. I'd say I'd say that's if

9:50

I'm going shopping, it's mostly window

9:51

shopping or I've chosen a specific thing

9:54

I'm looking for and if I don't see a

9:56

smidge of what that thing is, then it's

9:59

just onto the next part. So, you have a

10:02

9:00 p.m. ferry from where though? Not

10:04

from Brighton. From Portouth. Oh, so

10:05

you're going back to back to Portsmouth.

10:07

So, it's a little bit random, but I

10:09

didn't want to go to Southampton or

10:11

Portsmouth. I wanted to go further a

10:13

field and Winchester, we know like the

10:15

back of our hands. So, thought right

10:16

turn. Wow. And then so I'm guessing

10:19

you're getting like a overnight sleeper

10:20

ferry thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Get walk

10:23

our legs off today and and basically put

10:25

them up tomorrow on the ferry. Oh my

10:27

god. You're going to be knackered. Yeah,

10:28

I think so. And how long is the ferry?

10:31

About 30 hours. Oh, okay. So, over a

10:33

couple of days. Amazing. Yeah. So, we

10:35

landed in Spain on Wednesday morning.

10:37

Wow. Well, have a great time. Thank you.

10:40

And how does Brighton compare to your

10:41

home to Cardiff? Nothing beats where

10:43

we're from, I don't think. I think I'll

10:45

always have um a connection to that

10:47

place, but it's always good to see

10:49

different things. Um this is our first

10:51

first step of traveling really. We're

10:53

going to go broader obviously later on.

10:55

We're actually planning to go on a trip

10:57

to Japan in a few years for our shed big

10:59

birthdays. So, you know, it's all in the

11:02

works, but we're easing into it at the

11:04

moment. Yeah. Yeah. Nice. Great. I hope

11:06

you have a good time in Thank you.

11:07

Thanks for watching this week's episode.
