Hi everyone, welcome to a new episode of
0:02
Easy English. So, today is a windy but
0:05
beautiful day at Brighton Beach and I
0:08
thought I'd head down to this undercliff
0:10
behind me and interview the people
0:13
making their daily walks. So, the people
0:15
making their walks at this time of the
0:17
day are mostly retired people. So, I
0:19
thought I'd ask the questions, what do
0:21
people used [music] to do for work, what
0:23
are they enjoying about retired life,
0:25
and do they have any advice for us
0:28
people still working? Let's get to it
0:30
before I get blown away.
0:44
>> [music]
0:45
>> Hi. Hi.
0:47
>> [laughter]
0:48
>> How are you doing? I'm good, thank you.
0:50
>> Hi. Hi. Hi. How are you doing today? Uh
0:54
not too bad. It's a lovely day.
0:55
Weather's great, so yeah. Yeah.
0:57
>> Enjoying that. Enjoying the sunshine.
0:59
Nice breeze. Hi. Hi.
1:00
>> [laughter]
1:01
>> How's it going? Good, thank you. Uh what
1:03
are you up to with your day?
1:05
>> I'm walking my dog.
1:07
What's your dog's name?
1:08
>> My dog's name is Scout.
1:09
>> Scout. Yeah, are you going for walkies?
1:12
Yes. [laughter]
1:14
Hi. Hello. How are you going? Yeah, not
1:16
bad, thank you very much. Hi. Hi. Hi.
1:19
>> [laughter]
1:20
>> How are all three of you? Yeah, we're
1:21
good. Yeah. It's a nice day. It is a
1:24
really nice day today. And what what are
1:25
you three up to on this nice day?
1:27
>> Right.
1:29
>> Retired, recently retired. We decided
1:32
it.
1:32
And uh we meet up every few months for a
1:36
walk and a chat and a catch-up and to
1:39
talk about and celebrate the fact that
1:40
we don't work anymore. Yeah,
1:42
congratulations.
1:44
Yeah. Hi. Hello. Hi. [laughter]
1:46
Nice to see you. Uh
1:48
how are you doing today? Yeah, we're
1:50
we're really good, aren't we? Yes, we
1:52
are.
1:53
We're just having a walk along the
1:54
seafront. The usual walk. Yeah, it's a
1:57
lovely bright day, but it's very windy,
1:59
but very fresh. So
2:00
>> When you say usual walk, how often are
2:02
you doing this walk?
2:02
>> Every day. Every day?
2:04
>> Every day, at least 1 hour. Wow, good
2:07
for the health, isn't it? That's sure.
2:08
Very That's what it is about. Yeah.
2:10
>> Our health. How are you two doing today?
2:13
Fine, thank you. You look good. Yeah,
2:15
I'm okay. Okay, what What you up to at
2:17
the moment? You about to go for a swim?
2:19
No, I'm not today, but Christine is.
2:21
Yeah, nice. This is a just a normal
2:23
regular
2:25
Monday for you, is it? Monday? So it's
2:26
not Monday, is it? So
2:27
is it Today is Thursday today.
2:30
Yeah.
2:31
>> [laughter]
2:32
>> Yeah, that shows you where I'm at in my
2:33
mind.
2:34
>> Yeah, well, we all used to all go in
2:35
regularly every day, but the sea's been
2:37
so dirty lately, we have to wait until
2:40
we think it's okay. What are you up to
2:42
today?
2:43
Well, I'm just waiting to and I'm
2:46
meeting a friend who goes sea swimming
2:49
uh quite often, even at this time of the
2:51
year.
2:53
And I'm going to wait for her and we
2:55
might go and get a drink first before we
2:58
go to the end beach where she will
3:02
go into the sea. Wow.
3:04
>> And I will watch her today because it's
3:06
a little bit too chilly for me.
3:08
>> [laughter]
3:09
>> Yeah. I've been unwell. I've got a very
3:11
stiff neck and uh
3:13
so I've been indoors for the last uh
3:15
couple of days and I've just come out
3:17
today to try and uh get have a bit of
3:19
exercise. Yeah.
3:21
>> And cuz it's starting to get a bit
3:22
better.
3:23
Yeah. I was supposed to be sailing to
3:26
France tonight
3:27
>> No. on my yacht, yeah. No. But because
3:29
of the neck, I've had to pull out, yeah.
3:31
Yeah. Wow, you have a yacht in the at
3:33
the marina?
3:34
>> In the marina, yeah, Brighton marina.
3:41
One thing I've realized from speaking to
3:43
strangers for these videos is that the
3:45
hardest part isn't usually English
3:46
itself, it's actually starting a
3:49
conversation and keeping it going. Like
3:51
knowing what to say first, how to react
3:54
naturally, and how to avoid these
3:56
awkward silences. And that's exactly why
3:58
I like using iTalki. iTalki lets you
4:01
book one-to-one lessons with real
4:02
teachers, so you can practice real
4:04
conversations in a much more natural
4:06
way.
4:07
What I personally use it for is
4:09
conversation practice. Basically,
4:11
simulating situations like this, where
4:14
you have [music] to speak to someone you
4:16
don't really know and keep the
4:17
conversation going. But, you can also
4:20
use it for more specific goals,
4:22
preparing for exams such as the IELTS,
4:25
practicing job interviews [music]
4:26
where you need to speak more
4:27
confidently. I recently booked a lesson
4:30
where we focused on starting
4:31
conversations and asking better
4:33
follow-up questions. And then we say,
4:36
"Please." every time you
4:37
>> [laughter]
4:38
>> say something. And how you How do you
4:40
use colloquial English? So, that type of
4:44
small talk and like phrases where it
4:46
doesn't make sense in a sentence.
4:49
And that's what makes the biggest
4:51
difference. You're speaking to a real
4:53
person. You can make mistakes, get
4:55
feedback, and build confidence in a
4:57
realistic way. There's also no
4:59
subscription. You just pay per class,
5:01
and you can even try a few lessons at a
5:03
lower price to find the right teacher.
5:06
I only recommend products that I've
5:07
tried and genuinely like, and I
5:09
genuinely like this. You can sign up
5:12
here using the link below. Go to
5:14
italki.com/easyenglish3.
5:17
And with my code easyenglish3, you'll
5:20
get €5 off your first [music] class of
5:22
at least €10. But, it's only for the
5:24
first 50 people, so you better hurry up.
5:26
And by signing up through my link,
5:28
you're also supporting our channel,
5:30
which helps us keep making videos just
5:32
like this.
5:37
So, are you the most recent one to have
5:39
retired? Is that right?
5:40
>> Yeah. You are. I was the first.
5:42
You are.
5:43
>> [laughter]
5:43
>> Yeah, you started, didn't
5:44
Yeah, I went there.
5:46
Okay. And that's really lovely that
5:47
you've all decided to sort of keep on
5:48
meeting up.
5:49
>> Yeah, it's good. That's nice. And what
5:51
did you all three of you do together?
5:52
>> We worked in social work. We were all
5:54
social work managers. Are you retired?
5:56
Yes. You are retired. And what did you
5:58
used to do for a job?
5:59
>> I was I was a nurse. You were a nurse,
6:01
really? Yep. For the NHS?
6:02
>> Yep. And was that your job?
6:05
Or is that your job?
6:06
>> no. I was a I'm a teacher. I was a
6:08
teacher. I'm retired a teacher. And I
6:11
taught um
6:12
secondary schools and and sixth form
6:14
colleges uh sciences, biology and
6:17
physics. Are you working? Are you not
6:20
working?
6:20
>> I'm retired now. You are retired, okay.
6:22
>> Yeah, I used to work for the post
6:23
office. Oh, really? You are a postman?
6:25
>> No, I worked at Gatwick close to do the
6:26
figures for them at the Gatwick mail
6:28
center. We are both retired, recently
6:30
retired.
6:31
>> Oh, congratulations.
6:32
>> you. Are you happy about retiring?
6:34
>> Very happy now.
6:35
>> [laughter]
6:36
>> We we started working a long time, but
6:38
we think it's the time now. Yeah, nice.
6:40
And what did you both used to do for
6:42
Well,
6:43
it's a variety. Most recently we had a
6:45
property business where we rented uh
6:47
properties to students for Brighton
6:49
University in Sussex. All right, great.
6:51
Yeah. And what did you both used to do
6:53
for work then? Oh, I used to work in a
6:56
in a club. In a club, really?
6:58
>> Yeah. Like night club or It is police
7:01
club actually. A police club?
7:03
>> Yeah.
7:04
>> [laughter]
7:04
>> Okay. Are you recently retired or
7:06
retired for some time?
7:08
>> Uh
7:09
4 years ago. 4 years ago, okay.
7:11
>> Yeah. Uh can you give any advice to
7:13
people who are
7:14
younger than you, let's say?
7:16
Um Do you have any advice? Additional
7:18
advice for a teacher would be don't go
7:20
into teaching.
7:21
>> [laughter]
7:22
>> Uh well,
7:24
let's try not pick a cliche.
7:26
>> [laughter]
7:27
>> Um Have you ever given anything like
7:29
that to anyone? Uh not really. I always
7:31
say live today, worry about tomorrow
7:33
tomorrow. That's [laughter] my uh
7:35
That's a good one.
7:37
>> you know, you
7:38
you never know how long you're here.
7:39
That's great. I like that. It's not a
7:40
rehearsal, is it?
7:42
>> Think about tomorrow, tomorrow. Yeah.
7:44
>> [laughter]
7:44
>> I only worry about today. Tomorrow will
7:46
sort itself out.
7:47
>> That's great. I love that.
7:48
>> And we've just been talking. We can't
7:50
understand people that want to still
7:51
work past our age. Yeah.
7:52
>> [laughter]
7:52
>> cuz when they don't have to.
7:54
Interesting. So, then that's my next
7:55
question. What advice would you have to
7:57
people? Do you have any general advice
7:58
you have?
7:59
>> Retire while you're strong and fit and
8:01
healthy. And you've got the money to
8:03
enjoy life. Love that. That's really
8:05
>> But work hard to get the money in the
8:06
first place. You need to save the money
8:08
for your pension so that you can have a
8:10
nice life. Lovely. Nice bit of advice.
8:13
What's what's that bit of life advice
8:14
you you'd give? Like from a standpoint,
8:16
the thing you'd say to someone.
8:19
Just make the most of every day.
8:21
Just really try and make the most of
8:23
every day.
8:24
And just be
8:26
be kind to people. Anyway, You don't
8:29
know what their
8:31
life story is.
8:33
Looking back, do you have any advice for
8:35
people? Do you ever have give any
8:37
general or life advice? Well, I think
8:39
the life advice, um, I used to have a
8:41
full-on job that I worked probably 14
8:45
hours every day before the property
8:46
business. My my advice would be or more,
8:50
um, would be don't spend all your time
8:51
working. Make sure you have time for
8:53
your leisure. Get that work-life
8:55
balance. Right, cuz you you sort of
8:57
struggled with that, did you? Yeah, you
8:59
can short you can, uh, not pay enough
9:01
attention to your family, maybe. You
9:03
have to have projects, I think. You have
9:05
to have things to
9:06
a goals to achieve, you know? You I
9:09
think what In retirement, you were
9:10
saying about advice, I'd say you don't
9:12
want to just drift, you know? You've got
9:14
to
9:15
cuz if you've been working and you've
9:17
got a routine and there there's obvious
9:19
goals are set by other people often, but
9:22
you've still got goals to achieve. Um,
9:25
it's very difficult to just sort of
9:26
switch off. If you switch off from that
9:28
completely and have nothing, it, um,
9:32
I think that could be really depressing.
9:34
Shel Silverstein, I've got a little, uh,
9:36
sticker on my thing which says
9:39
anything can happen child, any
9:42
anything can be. Think something like
9:44
that. And what does that mean?
9:45
>> Just that anything is possible, right?
9:47
So
9:48
you you might you we all have
9:50
limitations. We but they're
9:51
self-imposed.
9:53
In actual fact there are no limits to
9:55
what you can do and you can make you can
9:57
make the life you want.
9:59
And my advice would be to make sure that
10:02
you have time for your five
10:04
grandchildren. Oh, okay. Cuz [laughter]
10:06
we've got beautiful five grandchildren.
10:08
They love us, we love them and we want
10:11
to have a lot of time for them. I bet
10:13
that you require a lot of time also.
10:15
>> They indeed they do. They keep us fit.
10:17
And a lot of energy, yes. Nice, yeah. I
10:19
bet they do keep you fit. Okay, well,
10:21
I'll let you get back on your way. Sure,
10:23
okay. Enjoy the rest of your walk. Will
10:24
do. See you around. Cheers. All right.
10:26
Bye.
10:27
Okay, it's a lovely to meet you there.
10:28
And you.
10:30
>> [laughter]
10:30
>> Have a nice rest of your day in the sun.
10:32
Yeah, oh, it is glorious. Okay, I'll let
10:35
you get back on with your walk and enjoy
10:37
it. Nice to speak to you. Nice to speak
10:38
to you, too. Thank you. Bye.
10:40
All right, I'll send you on your way.
10:42
Yeah, nice to meet you, too.
10:44
Oh, you're going that way now?
10:45
>> [laughter]
10:46
>> Okay, see you later. Brilliant, well,
10:48
it's really lovely to meet you. Nice to
10:49
meet you, too. Okay.
10:51
Thank you very much for watching this
10:53
week's episode. Let us know in the
10:55
comments below other scenarios you'd
10:57
like to see me making conversations in
10:59
and don't forget to start your first
11:01
lesson with iTalki with the code and
11:03
link in the description below.
11:06
And as always, we'll see you next time.
11:08
Tooda.
