it's actually my first time i'll be

0:02

properly celebrating valentine's day i

0:04

believe in the idea

0:06

i just don't like the way it's presented

0:08

necessarily why should just one day of

0:10

the year

0:11

be the day that you celebrate romance i

0:14

have

0:14

you know done things on valentine's day

0:16

before but i just i do find it a bit

0:19

cheesy actually it's a bit of a cop-out

0:21

really yeah i kind of like the idea

0:23

still it's a nice it's a nice way to

0:25

kind of you know take pause and

0:27

celebrate something that you probably

0:28

should celebrate i often get flowers

0:30

where he's popped out for milk and he

0:32

comes back with milk and flowers yeah

0:35

hello welcome to easy english so in a

0:37

few days time it will be valentine's day

0:41

now unfortunately i'm in brighton which

0:44

recently placed ninth in the least

0:46

romantic places in the uk nevertheless i

0:49

want to know what the people of brighton

0:50

do for valentine's day if they do

0:52

anything at all and what romance really

0:54

means to them before we start please do

0:56

not forget to like and subscribe here we

1:23

what are your thoughts on valentine's

1:25

day

1:27

well we don't actually celebrate

1:29

valentine's day

1:31

because we just

1:32

don't agree with the commerciality

1:35

behind it

1:36

it's why should just one day of the year

1:40

be the day that you celebrate romance it

1:42

should be

1:43

throughout the year and little things

1:44

that you do for your partner on a

1:46

regular basis show that you

1:49

your love and affection for them and not

1:51

just

1:52

um

1:53

overblown

1:55

uh things like flowers and chocolates

1:57

what are your thoughts in general on

2:00

valentine's day let's start with that

2:02

do you want to go first

2:03

yeah i shall go first um

2:09

yeah are you doing anything for

2:10

valentine's day

2:12

i'm not no no

2:14

okay

2:15

and what are your thoughts generally on

2:17

valentine's day my thoughts generally

2:19

um

2:21

it's a bit of a cop-out really it's a

2:23

bit of like uh

2:25

it's a bit of like a um

2:28

money-making scheme right yeah yeah

2:32

what what why why though

2:34

uh

2:35

because like i love my girlfriend every

2:36

day i don't like it's not like i need to

2:38

buy her a present like one day a year

2:40

yeah and just

2:42

feed companies money

2:44

buying them presents and so then in

2:45

terms of like

2:47

gestures of romance how what how does

2:50

how do you do it

2:53

i'm not i'm not good on flowers i have

2:55

to be honest no he's not actually i

2:57

think i've done it once or twice in 48

3:00

years really but you say this like it's

3:02

a negative thing oh i'd love flowers

3:05

i'll remember that

3:07

what are your thoughts on uh valentine's

3:10

day um well i'm afraid i'm a bit of an

3:13

old cynic with valentine's day and i

3:15

just i do see it as a commercial

3:18

opportunity to just like get people to

3:20

spend lots of money which is um

3:24

not really necessary because i guess

3:27

every day should be a gesture of love

3:30

and uh

3:32

but saying that um

3:34

i have

3:35

you know done things on valentine's day

3:37

before but i just i do find it a bit

3:39

cheesy actually um

3:42

so and a bit disingenuous and

3:45

if i'm perfectly honest just to kind of

3:48

you know go all out on one day and

3:51

so

3:52

yeah i've got nothing

3:54

personally against it it's fine and you

3:56

know whatever generates love is can only

3:59

be a good thing but i think

4:01

generally speaking you know

4:03

let's make it an everyday kind of thing

4:06

4:41

english videos now back to the episode

4:44

i guess for me i've never never really

4:46

celebrated valentine's day mostly

4:48

because for a while there wasn't anyone

4:50

to celebrate with until i found you

4:53

and

4:54

we haven't really done a huge amount

4:56

since mainly because it feels a bit

4:58

overly americanized and you know forced

5:01

yeah

5:02

but

5:03

yeah i kind of like the idea still it's

5:06

a nice it's a nice way to kind of you

5:08

know take pause and celebrate something

5:09

that you probably should celebrate yeah

5:11

and how about you what do you feel about

5:13

it yeah yeah i mean

5:16

yeah it feels a bit disingenuous at

5:18

times but i um

5:20

you know i'm

5:21

especially after a couple of years of

5:23

being

5:24

locked inside not being able to do

5:25

anything it's a good excuse to just

5:27

go out and have dinner and

5:31

celebrate like that i'm not into all of

5:33

the

5:35

all of the sort of big

5:37

card

5:38

things but i i try to i i try to space

5:41

that out throughout the year i hope that

5:43

i do a good enough job of sort of

5:45

expressing my affection

5:47

generally that i don't need to do it all

5:49

on one one day

5:50

so

5:51

i would say i'm not a huge fan of one

5:55

day of the year being

5:59

dedicated to expressing

6:01

love i believe

6:03

love should be expressed every day of

6:05

the year when was the last time each of

6:08

you did something nice for the other for

6:10

the other one

6:12

oh my gosh

6:13

um well it was a couple of weeks ago

6:16

that you went to

6:18

the local shop for

6:20

uh milk milk and bread and came out came

6:24

back with milk and bread and flowers

6:27

yeah and that was just

6:28

a spontaneous i've brought these for you

6:31

and they weren't just your

6:33

normal

6:34

garage style tiny bunch yeah yeah they

6:37

were a really nice bunch of flowers

6:40

right yeah yeah so it wasn't like a late

6:42

night no no no um

6:45

petrol station purchase no no okay and

6:48

then the other way around what was the

6:50

last time you remember

6:52

i think it was yeah because because of i

6:55

i've got i've got uh

6:58

celiac disease so i have to be very

7:00

careful with what i eat so after a

7:02

special diet

7:03

so that's affected both of us but susan

7:06

goes out of her way to find recipes on

7:09

the internet that she can then make so

7:11

that i can't have a mr kipling's baker

7:14

tart but she can make her own

7:17

which are gluten-free and that's for me

7:18

that's

7:19

[Music]

7:20

that's uh expression of of love and

7:23

affection doing something nice for me

7:25

because he absolutely loves them i love

7:27

bakery

7:29

it's actually my first time i'll be

7:31

properly celebrating valentine's day

7:33

this year so uh yeah how are you going

7:35

to do something i found out yeah i'm

7:37

going to do something i found out

7:38

recently that i've got to ask her still

7:39

even though

7:40

she is my girlfriend i'm expecting a

7:43

baby in april but uh

7:46

but uh yeah i'm gonna ask i have asked

7:48

about i've given her some flowers but uh

7:51

i don't know exactly what i want to do

7:52

right now but i'm very spontaneous you

7:54

know okay i'm pretty sure it'll just be

7:56

like the night before and just like get

7:57

a few things but actually she's right

7:59

here so maybe i shouldn't

8:02

don't say too much

8:03

when was last time we did something nice

8:04

for each other something small or big

8:06

doesn't matter

8:07

well

8:09

probably your birthday we we do

8:11

something we go out don't we yeah and we

8:14

we we have a meal or something like that

8:16

don't we yeah we just do nice things

8:18

every day okay and it's

8:20

there's no maybe do you surprise each

8:22

other or do you plan it with each other

8:24

oh i

8:25

more than you yes yes he says very good

8:28

on surprise no i'm not very good on

8:29

surprise i have to ask my daughter to

8:31

drop hints if i need it and then i get

8:33

them

8:35

when is the last time that you did

8:37

something and you had something done for

8:38

you like a romantic job

8:41

actually two days ago and

8:43

it was my well it was my husband's

8:45

birthday last week but

8:48

we couldn't celebrate at the time

8:49

because of work and unwell and etc so we

8:53

went for i got my mum to look after our

8:55

kids and we went for a big walk

8:57

on the downs and there's a local

8:59

vineyard

9:00

close by and i called the guy whilst we

9:03

were walking and asked if we could stop

9:04

by and buy a bottle of champagne which

9:07

is made on our like doorstep wow which

9:11

and he did and we went and sat on the

9:13

top of the hill and drank champagne and

9:15

watched the sunset i'm trying to figure

9:17

out are you going to do something this

9:18

in that ten days time

9:21

oh i don't know really we haven't

9:23

thought about it

9:24

like we haven't even thought about

9:25

tomorrow yet but i i guess we could like

9:28

i think for us we end up like last year

9:31

we did end up going out for a meal but

9:33

it wasn't on valentine's day itself

9:36

just because it it gets so busy to book

9:39

you know all the restaurants are totally

9:41

full like a month in advance so

9:44

i think we're a bit of those last minute

9:46

people so

9:47

we might just you know maybe a couple of

9:49

days afterwards or before we even just

9:51

end up doing something whether it's

9:53

coming down and having chips on the

9:55

beach or or finding a nice restaurant to

9:58

go out for a meal how do you do romantic

10:00

gestures then if not on one day

10:03

i i think romantic maybe is uh

10:08

is a sort of umbrella

10:10

phrase really because i think random

10:12

acts of kindness can be

10:16

um

10:17

seen as romantic gestures you know they

10:19

don't have to necessarily

10:22

uh be linked to

10:24

love in the

10:27

regular way that we think of it it can

10:29

be empathy kindness

10:32

things like that i'll give you one

10:34

example the other day i was at the bus

10:35

stop

10:36

and uh there was a mom and a dad and a

10:39

little girl and the little girl was

10:41

going home to her dad for the weekend

10:45

and the mom

10:46

the mom said

10:48

oh i must get you a pair of gloves soon

10:51

but she was she was not going to see her

10:54

little girl for the weekend because she

10:55

was spending the weekend with her father

10:57

right so i quickly dashed into the

11:00

pharmacy and bought a pair of little

11:02

gloves and then i i quickly ran back to

11:04

the bus stop before the bus arrived

11:07

i gave her the gloves because i just

11:09

thought well

11:10

i like having warm hands so

11:13

i don't know when the mom was going to

11:14

get around to getting the gloves but i

11:17

just thought well at least she'll have

11:18

gloves for the weekend

11:20

so things like that i mean i just that's

11:22

lovely i just think maybe valentine's

11:24

day has just become a hyped up thing

11:26

where it's focused on one day of the

11:28

year and i don't think that's

11:29

necessarily a good thing

11:31

thanks for watching this week's episode

11:33

let us know in the comments below your

11:35

plans for valentine's day if you have

11:36

any plans at all

11:38

and what romance really means to you

11:40

and we'll see you next week

11:42

bye
