There are a lot of ways the people

0:18

around us can help improve our lives. We

0:22

don't bump into every neighbor, so a lot

0:24

of wisdom never gets passed on, but we

0:26

do share the same public spaces. So over

0:30

the past few years, I've tried ways to

0:31

share more with my neighbors in public

0:33

space using simple tools like stickers,

0:36

stencils, and chalk. And these projects

0:39

came from questions I had like, "How

0:42

much are my neighbors paying for their

0:43

apartments?"

0:45

"How can we lend and borrow more things

0:47

without knocking on each other's doors

0:49

at a bad time?

0:52

How can we share more of our memories of

0:54

our abandoned buildings and gain a

0:56

better understanding of our landscape?

0:59

And how can we share more of our hopes

1:02

for our vacant storefronts so our

1:04

communities can reflect our needs and

1:06

dreams today?

1:10

Now, I live in New Orleans and I am in

1:13

love with New Orleans. My soul is always

1:16

soothed by the giant live oak trees

1:19

shading lovers, drunks, and dreamers for

1:21

hundreds of years. And I trust a city

1:24

that always makes way for music. I feel

1:27

like every time someone sneezes, New

1:29

Orleans has a parade.

1:32

The city has some of the most beautiful

1:33

architecture in the world, but it also

1:35

has one of the highest amounts of

1:36

abandoned properties in America.

1:40

I live near this house, and I thought

1:42

about how I could make it a nicer space

1:43

for my neighborhood. And I also thought

1:46

about something that changed my life

1:48

forever.

1:51

In 2009, I lost someone I loved very

1:54

much. Her name was Joan and she was a

1:58

mother to me. And her death was sudden

2:01

and unexpected.

2:06

And I thought about death a lot.

2:13

And

2:15

this made me feel deep gratitude for the

2:18

time I've had and

2:22

brought clarity to the things that are

2:24

meaningful to my life now.

2:30

But I struggle to maintain this

2:32

perspective in my daily life. I feel

2:35

like it's easy to get caught up in the

2:36

day-to-day and forget what really

2:38

matters to you.

2:40

So, with help from old and new friends,

2:42

I turned the side of this abandoned

2:43

house into a giant chalkboard and

2:46

stencled it with a fill-in- thelank

2:48

sentence. Before I die, I want to

2:53

so anyone walking by can pick up a piece

2:55

of chalk, reflect on their lives, and

2:58

share their personal aspirations in

3:00

public space.

3:02

I didn't know what to expect from this

3:04

experiment, but by the next day, the

3:07

wall was entirely filled out and it kept

3:09

growing. And I'd like to share a few

3:12

things that people wrote on this wall.

3:17

Before I die, I want to be tried for

3:20

piracy.

3:24

[Applause]

3:27

Before I die, I want to straddle the

3:30

international date line.

3:33

Before I die, I want to sing for

3:36

millions.

3:38

Before I die, I want to plant a tree.

3:44

Before I die, I want to live off the

3:46

grid.

3:48

Before I die, I want to hold her. One

3:51

more time.

3:55

Before I die, I want to be someone's

3:57

cavalry.

4:00

Before I die, I want to be completely

4:04

myself.

4:09

So, this neglected space became a

4:12

constructive one, and people's hopes and

4:14

dreams made me laugh out loud, tear up,

4:18

uh, and they consoled me during my own

4:20

tough times. It's about knowing you're

4:22

not alone. It's about understanding our

4:25

neighbors in new and enlightening ways.

4:27

It's about making space for reflection

4:29

and contemplation and remembering what

4:32

really matters most to us as we grow and

4:35

change.

4:37

I made this last year and started

4:39

receiving hundreds of messages from

4:41

passionate people who wanted to make a

4:43

wall with their community. So my civic

4:45

center colleagues and I made a toolkit

4:47

and now walls have been made in

4:49

countries around the world including

4:51

Kazakhstan,

4:54

South Africa,

4:57

Australia,

4:59

Argentina, and beyond. Together we've

5:02

shown how powerful our public spaces can

5:04

be if we're given the opportunity to

5:06

have a voice and share more with one

5:08

another.

5:13

Two of the most valuable things we have

5:15

are time and our relationships with

5:17

other people. In our age of increasing

5:20

distractions, it's more important than

5:23

ever to find ways to maintain

5:25

perspective and remember that life is

5:27

brief and tender. Death is something

5:30

that we're often discouraged to talk

5:32

about or even think about. But I've

5:34

realized that preparing for death is one

5:36

of the most empowering things you can

5:38

do. Thinking about death clarifies your

5:41

life.

5:45

Our shared spaces can better reflect

5:47

what matters to us as individuals and as

5:49

a community. And with more ways to share

5:52

our hopes, fears, and stories, the

5:55

people around us can not only help us

5:57

make better places, they can help us

5:59

lead better lives. Thank you.
