I'm used to thinking of the TED audience

0:17

as a wonderful collection of some of the

0:19

most effective, intelligent,

0:20

intellectual,

0:22

um, savvy, worldly, and innovative

0:24

people in the world. And I think that's

0:26

true. However, I also have reason to

0:29

believe that many, if not most of you

0:31

are actually tying your shoes

0:34

incorrectly. Now, now I I know that

0:37

seems ludicrous. I know that seems

0:39

ludicrous. And believe me, I I lived the

0:41

same sad life until about three years

0:43

ago. Uh, and what happened to me was I

0:46

bought what what was for me a very

0:47

expensive pair of shoes, but those shoes

0:49

came with round nylon laces and I

0:52

couldn't keep them tied. So, I went back

0:54

to the store and said to the owner, "I

0:56

love the shoes, but I hate the laces."

0:58

He took a look and said, "Oh, you're

1:00

tying them wrong." Now, up until that

1:02

moment, I would have thought that by age

1:05

50, one of the life skills that I had

1:07

really nailed was tying my shoes, but

1:11

not. So, let me

1:14

demonstrate. This is the way that most

1:17

of us were taught to tie our shoes.

1:23

Now, as it turns out, thank you. Uh uh

1:26

but but wait, there's more. As it turns

1:29

out, there's a strong form and a weak

1:32

form of this knot. And we were taught to

1:34

tie the weak form. And here's how to

1:35

tell. If you pull the strands at the

1:38

base of the knot, you can see that the

1:40

bow will orient itself down the long

1:42

axis of the shoe. That's the weak form

1:44

of the knot. But not to

1:46

worry, if we start

1:49

over and simply go the other direction

1:52

around the bow, we get this, the strong

1:56

form of the knot. And if you pull the

1:58

cords under the knot, you will see that

2:00

the bow orients itself along the

2:02

transverse axis of the shoe. This is a

2:05

stronger knot. It will come untied less

2:07

often. It will let you down less. And

2:10

not only that, it looks better. We're

2:13

going to do this one more time.

2:18

Start as

2:20

usual. Go the other way around the loop.

2:23

This is a little hard for children, but

2:25

I think you can handle

2:28

it. Pull the

2:30

knot. There it is. The strong form of

2:33

the shoe knot.

2:35

Now, in keeping with today's theme, I'd

2:38

like to point out, and something you

2:40

already know, that sometimes a small

2:42

advantage someplace in life can yield

2:45

tremendous results someplace

2:47

else. Live long and prosper.
