- [Narrator] Wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry,

0:07

has been performed in Malaysia for the past 500 years.

0:11

So what's Darth Vader doing in it?

0:14

You're going to want to ask these guys.

0:18

(drum music)

0:20

(man laughing)

0:23

(traditional Malaysian music)

0:26

- My name is Tintoy Chuo, and I design shadow puppets.

0:31

Many still categorize wayang kulit as a fading art.

0:35

Our objective is turning it from a fading art

0:39

into a popular art.

0:41

The notion of "Star Wars" is very popular

0:44

and I'm a big fan of "Star Wars".

0:46

Even my mom knows who Darth Vader is.

0:49

So I said, "Hey, how does it look

0:51

if I can actually combine these two things

0:54

into one unique project?"

0:57

- [Narrator] Tintoy couldn't bring

0:58

Star Wars-inspired puppetry to life all alone.

1:02

He needed a puppeteer, and not just any puppeteer;

1:05

a 13th-generation master puppeteer.

1:10

- My name is Muhammad Dain bin Othman,

1:13

also known as Pak Dain.

1:16

In Peperangan Bintang,

1:18

the characters that we use are

1:22

(speaking foreign language)

1:33

- [Tintoy] The first time I watched Pak Dain perform,

1:35

I was actually blown away.

1:37

He has this knowledge and expertise,

1:40

which is why I think that he's very important

1:43

and essential for our movement.

1:46

- [Narrator] There was just one thing.

1:47

The master puppeteer had never seen "Star Wars."

1:51

Well, no problem.

1:52

Tintoy introduced him

1:54

to a galaxy far, far away,

1:56

and Pak Dain was struck by its similarity

1:58

to traditional Malaysian stories.

2:01

- The themes of the story, which is about good versus evil,

2:05

In the main story in wayang kulit,

2:07

we have a very bad character, Ravan,

2:11

and in the "Star Wars" movie, we have Darth Vader,

2:14

he's also a bad character.

2:17

(man laughing)

2:19

Ram, or Sri Rama, is a very good character,

2:22

and in the "Star Wars"

2:23

we have Skywalker as a good character.

2:28

- [Narrator] Since 2013,

2:29

Tintoy and Pak Dain have performed around 100 shows

2:33

all over the world,

2:35

regenerating interest in this ancient art form.

2:38

- I hope by performing "Star Wars" story

2:42

in shadow play, someday the young generation

2:47

happy to watch wayang kulit,

2:48

and hope they will enjoy watching kulit,

2:50

and the art of wayang kulit is not dying anymore.

2:53

- One of the reasons that we picked "Star Wars

2:56

Episode Four: A New Hope" as our first preview,

3:00

is because we feel inside that what we are doing

3:05

is a new hope for wayang kulit.

3:09

(air whooshing)

3:13

(electronic ding)
