Hia, welcome to a new episode of Slow

0:04

Easy English. Now, at this moment,

0:07

myself and Easy are in the city of

0:10

Berlin, Germany, and we wanted to find

0:13

contrasting things between the UK and

0:17

Germany. Here we go.

0:33

So, one of the first things you will

0:35

notice that's very different in Germany

0:38

compared to the UK is the drinking

0:41

culture. Shops like this called asheti

0:45

or ashadek

0:48

are places where you can buy bottles of

0:50

alcohol and drink in the public which is

0:54

very illegal in the UK. Although people

0:57

do do it. The culture here is a lot more

1:00

accepting. They even outside of put out

1:04

small tables and chairs or benches where

1:08

you can enjoy your tasty tasty beer.

1:12

Another thing that is very different to

1:15

the UK is bike lanes. Yeah. Basically

1:19

very very wide bike lanes where people

1:22

can drive their scooter or bicycle. And

1:26

in comparison to the UK that's not

1:29

happening in Brighton or in London. I

1:31

think Mitchu

1:33

you are cycling in London a lot. It's

1:36

way more dangerous than on these fairy

1:38

whites. Basically, they have found their

1:40

own little street.

1:42

>> Here is another drinking based

1:45

difference. This place is closed and

1:49

currently it's 5. In the UK, pubs would

1:54

be already be open since 11:00 a.m.

1:57

>> And it's a Saturday.

1:58

>> And it's a Saturday. Where is everybody?

2:02

This place apparently opens around 8:00

2:05

and goes on till much later into the

2:08

early hours of Sunday. Another fun thing

2:11

is this

2:16

cash only. In the UK, it's very normal

2:20

to have card contactless everywhere.

2:23

Contactless is everything. But also,

2:27

you're allowed to smoke in here. What

2:30

the hell?

2:34

What's going on in Germany?

2:48

And one thing we can't forget that all

2:51

Berliners love that doesn't really exist

2:53

in the UK is the love for techno music.

3:01

[Music]

3:11

3:13

episode, we would just like to quickly

3:30

you been a conversation member of us

3:32

for?

3:33

>> So, I joined Easy English Conversation

3:34

Call in March and I have to say that I

3:37

love the atmosphere. So, it's lovely.

3:39

Yeah, there are a lot of nice people and

3:42

you can improve your English. So, don't

3:44

wait and join us.

3:46

>> Absolutely. All you have to do is go to

3:48

3:51

or click the link up here. somewhere

3:55

and join our conversation membership.

3:57

We're even offering a 7-day free trial

4:00

so you can test it, see what level

4:02

you're at, and get rid of those nerves

4:04

of speaking English. Now, back to the

4:06

episode.

4:14

So, one of the things we noticed when we

4:17

were in Berlin were these amazing

4:21

courtyards. Now, if you look at our

4:25

Airbnb where we are staying, it looks

4:28

just like a normal building block. But

4:31

if you follow me,

4:34

come here.

4:46

Then you'll see that there are these

4:49

amazing inner courtyards for everyone to

4:53

use. We even have lifts

4:59

and even an amazing tree.

5:06

Now, in England, very typically, if you

5:09

live in flats like this, you don't even

5:13

have a front or a back garden.

5:18

>> What is this?

5:22

>> It's also a great place to store your

5:24

bicycles for the bins,

5:27

and there's even a small sand pit for

5:30

the children to use.

5:37

very small.

5:41

>> How amazing. No,

5:45

>> something very special in Berlin are the

5:48

wide pavements. You have a lot of plays

5:52

here and that's actually special for

5:54

Berlin, not for Germany really for

5:56

Berlin, the city Berlin. And in

5:59

Brighton, we can show you in comparison

6:02

now we have those tiny narrow lanes and

6:06

actually all over England, especially in

6:08

the countryside. So these wire

6:10

pavements, what do they do here?

6:19

So, another one I've noticed which I

6:21

find very funny is that people wait at

6:25

traffic lights at the red even when

6:28

there are no cars coming. In the UK,

6:31

people will cross when there are cars

6:33

coming on a red light. But I like this

6:36

because it's a really good indicator for

6:39

children to not cross the road when

6:42

there maybe are cars coming, especially

6:45

quiet electric cars. Good lesson to be

6:48

learned.

6:49

>> They don't even walk when it's green.

6:51

>> It's green and they're not walking yet.

7:03

So unbelievably and quite annoyingly,

7:07

you're not able to take your dog into

7:09

the parks, especially in Berlin, which

7:12

is very, very annoying right at this

7:15

moment.

7:18

And whilst we're on the subject of

7:21

parks, I find it very strange that in

7:25

Berlin and in most parts of Germany, you

7:28

will find parks in between the buildings

7:31

and residences where in the UK we have

7:34

things called commons, which are free to

7:37

access pieces of land for the public.

7:40

And on there you'll find big big grassy

7:43

sections where you can let your dog off,

7:45

you can play football and you can go on

7:48

the swings and roundabouts and all the

7:50

other fun playground things.

7:53

Thank you for watching this week's

7:56

episode of Slow Easy English. Let us

7:59

know in the comments below if you find

8:02

anything in Berlin which is similar to

8:04

your country's culture or any

8:06

differences that you've noticed in the

8:09

UK and Germany. And as always, we'll see

8:12

you next time. To
