A lot of industries within the design

0:04

ecosystem are one of the most polluting

0:07

industries. So we're looking at reducing

0:08

the amount of waste that is there. It's

0:11

really important for designers to use

0:13

recycled or waste material in their work

0:14

today. Consumers are more concerned to

0:17

connecting their values to what they're

0:19

purchasing. They're more aware and

0:21

conscious of sustainability and their

0:23

design choices.

0:26

Plastic has endless potential and plus

0:29

we do have a lot of plastic waste in the

0:32

world. So we have a lot to work with.

0:36

>> We all have a shared responsibilities to

0:38

think about how we can incorporate

0:40

recycled material into new products.

0:44

The UA plays a really important role in

0:46

supporting this kind of innovation very

0:48

much focused on sustainability on

0:50

providing the right kind of support for

0:52

the community.

1:17

I receive the old marine boards or even

1:20

old road barriers and then we clean

1:23

them. We cut them into pieces. Then we

1:26

shred it into the smaller pieces. We

1:29

input into the extrusion machine. And

1:32

then for me the magic happens at the

1:34

moment where I melt this material.

1:38

I work with what colors I have in place.

1:40

Let's say maybe I have a red colored rod

1:42

barrier and then maybe yellow colored a

1:44

marine boy. And then I will see if I mix

1:47

these two colors uh what new color will

1:50

emerge. I take industrial and

1:53

construction plastic waste and turn it

1:56

into design objects and furniture

1:58

pieces.

2:00

I was inspired by different artists and

2:03

brands who work with recycled materials

2:06

and that's where for me it was very

2:08

exciting. My alchemy series dining table

2:12

was the result of over 60 experiments. I

2:14

sort of even developed my own precise

2:17

ratio recipe.

2:19

>> Working with recycled material

2:21

influences the designer's thinking

2:22

process. I think it creates an

2:24

interesting edge and a challenge for

2:27

designers to start with. In Dubai, we've

2:29

seen lots of designers that have

2:31

actually embraced this technique and

2:34

actually become known for their unique

2:36

and personal style that is linked very

2:38

much to the material itself, linked to

2:41

the sustainable direction that they've

2:43

been taking. There's also a growth

2:45

number of initiatives and platforms that

2:47

the we provide to designers, innovators,

2:50

creators.

2:53

Five years ago, uh I became a mother and

2:57

uh I moved from the oil and gas sector

3:00

that extracts the oil and resources to

3:03

the other side where I'm working with

3:05

one of its byproducts.

3:08

Motherhood was definitely one of the

3:10

most transformational moments for me in

3:12

my life because to be honest I have

3:14

never ever imagined that one day I will

3:16

become a furniture designer working with

3:18

recycled plastic but at the same time

3:21

she feels proud that her mother is a is

3:24

a designer.

3:27

I'm a more like a processdriven

3:29

designer. So first I explore my

3:32

material. I explore all of the

3:33

fabrication processes. So rather than

3:36

creating products that are so

3:38

discardable that you take, use and throw

3:41

away, it's about how can we design

3:44

products and objects that are not meant

3:47

to be thrown away after use, giving it a

3:51

second life.

3:54

I definitely see a growing interest in

3:56

connecting sustainability with identity

3:58

and design by making sure that designers

4:01

see sustainability as a tool to innovate

4:04

and very much still linked to you as an

4:07

individual and your identity as an

4:09

artist.

4:11

The world needs to evolve in terms of

4:13

sustainability and innovation by

4:15

respecting the resources that we have

4:17

now and by implementing the practices

4:21

that will prolong the life of our planet

4:24

for the future generations.
