0:00

do you have any

0:02

regrets um it's a very big question

0:06

um yes I think I do do you have any

0:10

regrets of course well they're not

0:12

really deep regrets cuz that's fine I

0:14

wouldn't be where I am today if I didn't

0:16

do what I did yeah I guess like there's

0:18

one really big one and that is that my

0:21

mom died before I got

0:26

sober I suppose it was just I was young

0:29

didn't I don't know I just felt like

0:31

maybe it wasn't the right decision for

0:32

me at the time is there a positive to be

0:34

taken from you actually being a bit more

0:36

careful as opposed to Carefree yeah I

0:39

think I mean it meant that I had more

0:40

security and I was able to buy a place

0:42

to live live life and do what you can

0:44

while you can yeah make the most of

0:47

being young and not having

0:49

responsibilities we'd like another

0:50

adventure but we have to be careful what

0:52

type of Adventure it

0:54

is hi welcome to a new episode of easy

0:58

English this week week we went down to

1:01

the beach to hear people's stories of

1:03

regret we were interested to know how

1:06

people dealt with their perceived missed

1:08

opportunities how their life may have

1:10

looked if they've chosen a different

1:12

path and how they understand their

1:14

regret in perspective to their life

1:17

today here we go what regrets or regrets

1:21

do you have well I regret not having

1:24

gone to University earlier uh my biggest

1:26

regret is probably not traveling more

1:28

when I was younger when I had the money

1:30

to go and see the world I think I'd like

1:34

to have um spent time working abroad

1:37

that's one of the things that I didn't

1:38

do I was too uh timid about I guess yes

1:43

I think I would like to have moved my

1:46

move from my house earlier than we're

1:48

thinking of doing at the moment okay

1:51

okay I think we should have should have

1:52

moved 10 years ago I currently play

1:54

tennis married to a tennis coach so um

1:58

so kind of um ten is in the family

2:00

anyway um but I never did any racket

2:02

Sports when I was younger so I suppose

2:05

the regrets would be maybe if I'd have

2:07

take it out when as younger that I'd be

2:09

able to kind of excel it more I guess I

2:14

have a a regret in a in a way that I

2:17

didn't take up a a creative job I wish I

2:20

bought a house about 10 years ago cuz

2:22

it's so much cheaper I would have liked

2:24

to have explored my passion for art and

2:28

illustration

2:29

there's one really big one and that is

2:32

that my mom died before I got

2:37

sober uh okay where do I start with

2:41

this sorry that may not have been what

2:43

you were wanting but no it's a curve

2:45

ball but it's it's nice that you shared

2:47

that um where would you uh have liked to

2:51

have gone 10 years ago if you could

2:53

have I'd like to have gone to

2:56

keonia really yes oh wow okay for any

2:59

reason

3:01

you're walking

3:02

away no the reason is that we We own

3:05

land in kefalonia so I really would have

3:08

liked to have particularly gone to Spain

3:11

and and spent some time actually living

3:13

there properly and were you given that

3:15

opportunity at some point I had a very

3:17

secure job that paid quite well so you

3:20

know it was

3:21

about getting outside of my comfort zone

3:23

and I decided not to get out of my

3:25

comfort zone so uh yeah so that's it's

3:28

kind of minor regret I did this to much

3:30

traveling but you just sort of you end

3:31

up sort of wasting it you're like what

3:33

did I get I bought a new car bought a

3:35

new bikes do you know what I mean top of

3:36

the range sort of stuff and just went

3:38

out with the lads and drinking and

3:40

nights out and just sort of you Whit it

3:42

away sounds horrible oh terrible

3:45

terrible times yeah yeah but yeah it's

3:48

it's one of those things but like I say

3:50

the more you then can't afford it the

3:52

more you're likely to spend the savings

3:54

so but yeah I definitely like would have

3:56

traveled more what benefits would you

3:58

have had if you'd have gone early yeah I

4:00

would have been able to forge a career

4:02

in something that I really wanted to do

4:04

okay and how so how much longer did you

4:06

wait until you went I didn't go to

4:09

university to do my ba until I was I

4:13

didn't access course and then I I went

4:15

to University at 49 something like that

4:20

I was really good at Art when I was at

4:22

school um and I didn't take that on

4:25

further cuz I already had kind of a job

4:27

lined up and so I'm not in a cre cretive

4:30

job which is where I probably would like

4:32

to be but then there's really much money

4:35

in creative jobs it's like um interior

4:36

design but there was an option for you

4:38

at some point to have gone down yes

4:39

there was yeah in what in what sense uh

4:42

in the sense of uh choosing to do

4:44

illustration and and choose that journey

4:46

in life as in education as in drawing

4:49

and illustrating kids books and okay

4:53

more being more artistic and what made

4:55

you go down the safer route let's say

4:58

was it safer yeah it was money okay More

5:01

Money More security and also working

5:03

working with people which I enjoyed but

5:06

um yeah so I'm currently looking at

5:08

returning to illustrations oh really yes

5:13

so it was about 11 years ago and that my

5:16

mom died

5:18

and I was drinking too much yeah and

5:23

um and had been for you know her whole

5:26

life and then 6 months after she died I

5:29

got so So and I've been sober ever since

5:33

and like so she never got to see me

5:35

happy really is the thing

5:38

because because I was stuck in the

5:40

drinking and I was yeah so that's yeah

5:43

that's the kind of time frame and a

5:45

little bit more before we carry on with

5:46

6:36

video/ membership and we'll see you in

6:38

our pub now back to the episode I

6:41

imagine with this kind of subject a

6:44

little bit more so than the other people

6:46

interviewed there's like do do you ever

6:48

play like a what if what if's game with

6:51

yourself a little bit it's unfair to

6:53

yourself to do it but what if I had and

6:56

then would it have mattered much anyway

6:58

do you think it would have changed much

7:00

in your life well actually I kind of do

7:03

so it's almost probably a bit the flip

7:05

of what you were thinking so I do the so

7:08

cuz I don't think that I don't think I

7:10

would have got sober if my mom hadn't

7:13

died when she did so it's more that kind

7:16

of God what if she hadn't died then what

7:19

might my crazy chaotic life have looked

7:21

like and what might our crazy chaotic

7:24

relationship have looked like only

7:26

because I was crazy and chaotic was the

7:27

relationship like that but

7:30

like rather than the kind of what if she

7:34

had continued to be alive and I was

7:35

sober cuz I don't feel like there's

7:37

a is it I don't feel like that was a

7:40

possible

7:41

scenario could you imagine how your life

7:42

would have been had you have taken up a

7:45

job in Spain would you still be there

7:47

now you think I think so yeah I think

7:49

it's I think uh temperamentally I I get

7:51

on very well with the

7:53

culture um and I I just I'm I'm very

7:57

very very kind of uh

8:00

passionate about about being in Spain

8:02

it's a place I lovely I'd love to be and

8:04

I'd like to spend more time there but

8:06

perhaps not having lived there perhaps

8:08

that's why I'm still Enchanted by it how

8:10

could you have imagined your life being

8:11

now had you done it 10 years ago it's

8:14

very difficult to think about that

8:17

because you have different experiences

8:19

and

8:20

um if it was the experience I think it

8:23

would be I think we'd be more laidback

8:26

more

8:28

relaxed um

8:30

[Laughter]

8:32

warmer um our way of life would have

8:35

changed totally right but could it have

8:37

been a bit more stressful because you'd

8:38

have to build something yes of course

8:40

there's always a risk involved in in in

8:42

that and it would have been stressful

8:44

but yes but sometimes the risk and the

8:47

stress you work round I can kind of

8:49

Imagine maybe that there would be a very

8:51

different person standing in front of me

8:53

had you gone into the University at 18

8:56

19 and oh yes because then I wouldn't

8:59

would have gone around the world all

9:01

right do both you see so so um very

9:06

different

9:07

person yes how could you imagine

9:10

yourself now had you had found tennis

9:13

and taken up the interior design I mean

9:16

probably quite similar um I mean I play

9:18

tennis now i' just be better at it you

9:21

be beating your tennis coach exactly

9:23

yeah i' actually not have so much

9:24

frustration in the sport um and like

9:27

interior design yeah maybe my path would

9:29

have gone differently and who knows it's

9:32

yeah who knows what would have happened

9:33

if i' have gone to University or

9:35

something and studied into a design

9:36

probably my path would have gone

9:37

completely differently but I'm really

9:39

happy in my life now so it's not

9:41

something that I've got kind of a

9:43

massive regret on because I can still

9:46

enjoy it as a as a passion you see it

9:48

almost like your mom helped you in a way

9:50

or that yeah as you said like without

9:52

her dying maybe it wouldn't have

9:53

triggered this absolutely yeah that

9:56

definitely that that needed to happen in

9:57

order for me to get saber and

10:01

away I think my mom would be happy with

10:03

that you know yeah cuz cuz she's a mom

10:06

she'd be sad to miss out on it but I

10:09

really like the moment at which the sun

10:10

came out yeah it was frustrating for me

10:13

cuz I had to change the camera but

10:15

actually it was a nice moment it a nice

10:18

significant moment it was everyone has

10:20

them so is it a good is it a good thing

10:22

seems to be an essential part of being a

10:24

person to have

10:26

one um

10:31

I don't see the point of them really to

10:34

be quite honest I've got little things

10:36

that oh maybe I should have done that

10:37

but I wouldn't have got to thinking that

10:40

if I had done that so it all swings and

10:43

roundabouts really

10:45

okay what give to people who kind of

10:48

either live in regret or have regrets

10:51

coming from someone who doesn't really

10:53

attention be more

10:55

present and be grateful for what you

10:57

have

10:59

what advice would you give to people

11:00

about having regrets and about you know

11:03

you get you chosen more careful as

11:04

opposed to Carefree life yeah it's a

11:07

difficult one because it's it's

11:08

difficult to advise people to be

11:09

Reckless but I think sometimes if if

11:12

your heart is in something then you

11:14

should follow your heart maybe a bit

11:15

more than your head and uh yeah I think

11:18

that's probably the one thing I've I've

11:19

learned is that I I perhaps I've been a

11:21

little bit too cautious in some respects

11:23

but you know I've been I've had a very

11:24

good life I've been very very lucky in

11:26

many ways so you know I don't the

11:28

regrets are minor

11:31

that was then this is now yeah I'm still

11:34

standing I'm still walking I'm still

11:36

breathing yeah so enjoy every day nice

11:41

lovely you would always have regrets

11:42

with anything if you allow them to to um

11:46

take over your thought process but if

11:48

you can try and say positive and happy

11:51

with the choices that you make then

11:53

those regrets won't kind of swallow you

11:54

up you do more like materialistic stuff

11:57

rather than yeah don't be materialistic

11:58

I would

12:00

making memories rather than yeah buying

12:03

things bring some water it like you can

12:06

always get El you can always rent you

12:08

can always do that traveling memories

12:11

family friends you can't make that up so

12:15

that's what i' probably do just have

12:17

enjoy yourself don't put too much stress

12:19

in yourself it have fun yeah from the

12:23

story you told me what advice would you

12:24

then give to people about grab

12:26

everything while you can

12:29

really yeah

12:31

lifee it's very difficult to say be

12:34

carefree but you know when opportunities

12:36

and things come up don't grab them don't

12:40

spend too much time trying to analyze

12:41

them okay you know if you think if it

12:43

feels right do it I like that that's a

12:46

nice motto I guess the last question I

12:48

ask asking people is and this is you're

12:51

a good person to come to this then

12:53

because most people it's like

12:54

materialistic things they have regrets

12:56

about what what advice would you give to

12:58

people when it comes to regrets because

13:01

everyone has them so there must be some

13:03

human thing where you it's it's natural

13:06

to have them are they good should you

13:08

have

13:10

regrets so it's interesting cuz I don't

13:13

think I would normally use the word

13:14

regret okay how would you phrase

13:16

[Music]

13:20

it probably just something I'm sad about

13:23

yeah something that I'm sad about so

13:24

it's not I don't wish the past would

13:27

change necessarily but just accept that

13:30

it is as it is not try and block it out

13:32

and pretend it didn't happen but also

13:34

not not try and wish that it was

13:36

different just kind of be like I guess

13:38

acceptance is what it's that's your

13:40

story yeah it's like yeah cuz that's and

13:43

that's all those parts of the journey

13:45

had to come together in order for this

13:47

be to be the journey

13:51
