Hello, Neil.
0:31
Hi, Georgie.
0:32
Happy New Year.
0:33
Thank you. Happy New Year to you too.
0:35
Today we are talking about the start of a new year.
0:39
So we're going to talk about some of our plans for the new year.
0:43
And we'll also make some New Year's resolutions.
0:46
So this is a tradition where people make promises to themselves for the new year.
0:52
Yeah. They're difficult to keep aren't they?
0:55
They are.
0:56
But we try anyway.
0:58
Exactly. So, are you excited about the new year, Neil?
1:01
I think so. 2026. Can you believe it?
1:05
I can not believe it.
1:06
OK, so have you got any big plans?
1:10
Um, well, I'm going to start the year with a big trip, actually,
1:14
with my family.
1:16
Um, we're going to South Africa because this is where my parents had their honeymoon.
1:22
And my mum also used to live there for a while.
1:25
So it's a dream of hers to go with the whole family.
1:30
Um, and she can show us around a bit.
1:33
What about you?
1:34
Well, I don't have any big plans yet,
1:38
but it's an important year at school, especially for my daughter.
1:44
Um, and so when she finishes that, her school year and her exams,
1:50
maybe we'll do something special to mark that occasion.
1:54
So, Georgie, it's impossible to talk about the new year without mentioning resolutions.
2:00
So what are your resolutions?
2:03
I think my main one is to make fewer resolutions,
2:08
because last year I made too many and it was really hard to keep them
2:14
and it made me feel very bad about myself.
2:17
So this year, I'm just going to keep it simple.
2:22
Health, so running and um, language learning, Spanish, I need to do that.
2:30
But for running, I think this time I need a big goal.
2:34
So I'm a bit scared about it, but I think I'm going to book a half marathon.
2:41
Um, because then I can make a training programme and feel really motivated.
2:48
Um, I think that's what I need.
2:50
I think that's a great idea.
2:51
Um, what about you, Neil?
2:54
Any New Year's resolutions?
2:56
Well, usually once Christmas and New Year are over,
3:02
we have the two darkest, saddest months of the year.
3:09
January and February.
3:10
And normally I really just wish that those months go away
3:15
and that we get into spring.
3:17
But this year I think I'm going to enjoy every day, regardless,
3:23
you know, even if the weather is awful and it's dark and cold, I still want
3:28
to get out there and appreciate it rather than wish my life away.
3:33
So, Neil, do you have any goals for this year?
3:36
So something you want to achieve?
3:39
Yeah, I think I don't really want to take up something new.
3:45
'Take up' means 'start a new activity'.
3:48
But I think my goal is to become good at something I like doing.
3:56
Right. And what could that be?
3:59
So I like learning Spanish, but I'm not very good.
4:05
I'm not very dedicated,
4:07
and I'm always jealous of people who can speak really well.
4:11
Mmm. Um, and the same with my guitar.
4:15
Yeah. I always want to get better.
4:17
Yeah. A goal could be to write a song and produce it.
4:22
Yeah. And play it on this podcast.
4:26
If you're all really unlucky.
4:28
I don't think anyone wants that.
4:31
Thank you for your honesty.
4:40
Right. Let's recap the language we heard during the conversation.
4:45
We heard 'New Year's resolution', which is a promise you make to yourself
4:50
at the start of a year to start doing something good
4:53
or stop doing something bad.
4:56
We heard 'goals'.
4:58
Now, goals are things that we say that we want to do and try to achieve them.
5:04
We also heard 'motivated',
5:06
which is a feeling of really wanting to do something and doing it.
5:10
For example, I feel motivated to run a half marathon this year.
5:15
And we heard the expression 'to wish your life away'.
5:19
If you wish your life away, you don't appreciate what's happening now.
5:24
You look far into the future.
5:26
That's it for this episode of Real Easy English.
5:30
Do you have a New Year's resolution?
5:32
We'd love to hear about it.
