when i
0:03
lift weights i don't hear things i don't
0:07
see things i know it sounds weird but
0:09
i'm so focused on lifting
0:11
that everything else kind of blanks out
0:13
[Music]
0:15
when i was super depressed weightlifting
0:17
was a reason
0:18
to do something i do think it helped me
0:22
manage those mood swings
0:25
you know being bipolar is something that
0:27
i'm proud to say like i'm okay with it
0:30
and i would like to erase a stigma on
0:33
all mental disorders

[Music]
0:42
growing up sports were always pretty
0:44
important to my family
0:45
and i spent 11 years doing gymnastics
0:49
when i was 15 years old i decided to end
0:52
my career in gymnastics
0:53
and i found crossfit just to stay in
0:55
shape through crossfit
0:57
my current coach recruited me to get
1:00
into
1:01
weightlifting competitively and i
1:03
decided to
1:04
take that on full time from there
1:07
i've been weightlifting for about four
1:09
years my first national
1:10
competition was youth nationals in 2016.
1:14
about two years into my career i kind of
1:17
realized i could
1:18
go places with this in 2018 i had my
1:22
first international medals
1:24
at the junior world championships and
1:28
from there it kind of took off and last
1:30
year in 2019
1:32
and my breakout year the highlight would
1:34
be
1:35
my 2019 world championship
1:40
last year i had a minor meet in cuba
1:43
and i just didn't want to lift i wasn't
1:46
feeling motivated i didn't have that
1:49
fire in me that i usually do
1:51
i bombed out which means you don't make
1:53
a lift when i got home i
1:55
didn't really get out of bed for about a
1:57
week
1:58
and i had been dealing with you know
2:01
bouts of depression for
2:02
probably two years at that point that
2:05
was kind of my breaking point
2:07
when i decided i needed help and when i
2:09
finally went to
2:10
the doctor the psychiatrist almost
2:13
immediately
2:14
recognized my symptoms and i was
2:16
diagnosed with bipolar
2:17
disorder type 2. one of the first things
2:22
i thought was that i'm crazy because it
2:24
has kind of been put in my head
2:27
that there's a stereotype around people
2:28
that struggle with mental health
2:30
it didn't take me long to realize that
2:32
there's nothing to be ashamed of
2:34
and i think i decided very early on that
2:37
i was going to share this journey with
2:39
others in hopes that it would help other
2:41
people
2:42
get health faster than i did
2:49
once i got help i could go to training
2:50
and focus on weightlifting
2:52
not on if i'm gonna feel great today or
2:54
if i'm gonna feel awful
2:57
at this point i'm all but qualified for
2:59
the olympics so
3:00
i'm really excited to train for that and
3:03
i'm hoping to meddle there
3:05
and represent the usa for the first time
3:10
there are some days that i literally
3:12
have to
3:13
push to my maximal effort and
3:16
be about one rep away from failure and
3:18
it's not fun it can be very painful
3:21
but you know when it comes down to it
3:23
those are the days you get stronger
3:25
it's a lot of hard work and then it's
3:27
really awesome to just
3:29
put everything into those few seconds
3:31
that you're competing hey everybody my
3:46
