my big idea is a very very small idea

0:19

that can unlock billions of big ideas

0:24

that are at the moment dormant inside us

0:27

and my little idea that will do that

0:30

is sleep

0:37

this is a room of type a women

0:42

this is a room of sleep deprived women

0:47

and i learned the hard way the value of

0:49

sleep

0:51

two and a half years ago i fainted from

0:53

exhaustion i hit my head on my desk i

0:56

broke my cheekbone i got five stitches

0:58

on my right eye

1:00

and i began the journey of rediscovering

1:03

the value of sleep

1:06

and in the course of that

1:08

i studied i met with medical doctors

1:10

scientists and i'm here to tell you

1:13

that the way to a more productive more

1:16

inspired more joyful life is getting

1:19

enough sleep

1:26

and we women are going to lead the way

1:29

in this new revolution this new feminist

1:32

issue

1:33

we are literally going to slip our way

1:35

to the top literally

1:44

because

1:45

unfortunately for men sleep deprivation

1:48

has become a virility symbol

1:51

i was recently having dinner with a guy

1:53

who bragged that he had only gotten four

1:55

hours sleep the night before

1:58

and i felt like saying to him but i

1:59

didn't say it i felt like saying you

2:01

know what if you had gotten five this

2:04

dinner would have been a lot more

2:05

interesting

2:10

there is now a kind of sleeve

2:11

deprivation one-upmanship

2:14

especially here in washington if you try

2:16

to make a breakfast date and you say how

2:18

about eight o'clock they are likely to

2:20

tell you eight o'clock is too late for

2:21

me but that's okay you know i can get a

2:23

game of tennis in and do a few

2:24

conference calls and meet you at eight

2:27

and they think that means that they are

2:29

so incredibly busy and productive but

2:32

the truth is they're not

2:34

because we at the moment have had

2:37

brilliant leaders in business in finance

2:40

in politics

2:42

making terrible decisions

2:45

so a high iq does not mean that you're a

2:48

good leader because the essence of

2:50

leadership is being able to see the

2:52

iceberg before it hits the titanic

2:57

and we've had far too many icebergs

2:59

hitting our titanics

3:01

in fact

3:02

i have a feeling that the lehman

3:04

brothers was lehman brothers and sisters

3:07

they might still be around

3:12

while all the brothers were busy you

3:14

know just being hyper-connected 24 7

3:18

maybe a sister would have noticed the

3:19

iceberg because she would have woken up

3:21

from a seven and a half or eight hours

3:23

sleep

3:24

and have been able to see the big

3:26

picture

3:28

so as we are facing all the multiple

3:31

crises

3:33

in our world at the moment

3:35

what is good for us on a personal level

3:38

what's going to bring more joy gratitude

3:41

effectiveness in our lives

3:43

and be the best for our own careers

3:46

is also what is best for the world

3:49

so

3:50

i urge you

3:52

to shut your eyes

3:54

and discover the great ideas that lie

3:57

inside us

3:58

to shut your engines and discover the

4:00

power of sleep thank you

4:02

[Applause]

4:12

25 of the world's food supply is lost to

4:15

spoilage that's 458 billion dollars

4:19

worth every year on a smarter planet

4:21

we're building intelligence into

4:22

physical things

4:24

so we can know how far our foods travel

4:27

monitor temperature all the way to the

4:29

market i know it got to the table fresh

4:32

it's already happening in places like

4:33

canada norway and vietnam when we make

4:35

food smarter we make it safer that's

4:38

what i'm working on i'm an ibmer let's

4:40

build a smarter planet
